     he was almost offended at how relaxed she was, jealous even that she could possibly stay so calm under such dire circumstances. he scratches the side of his face, and gives her a stressed expression hoping she’d be able to read the room a bit. glasses adjusted and a frown begins to form— though more frustrated than sad.  “ n-no…? like, th-t-there’s no accounting for how dangerous it is down there. unless you, like, w-want to die…? in which case i, uh, sure hope you don’t? l-listen, lup, i think you’re really strong on your own and you could p-probably take down, i dunno, a couple’a guys, but if they got to you then— ”  he stops breathing at that thought, and then inhales deeply to continue.  “ no. you’ll die no matter what. ”

        she takes a slow and steady breath, a hand on her chest for just a brief moment as she does — then lup looks to barry with a grin, a seemingly innocent action but if barry had learnt her well enough in the last decade of cycles or so then he should have known by now that there was no changing her mind on it this early in the game.        ‘    — we have one shot to save this world, barold. even if they’re trying to murder us for existing i want my chance to try. if i die and come back you can tell me i told you so and i’ll listen to you for the next 10 cycles.    ‘        giving a wink, the elf sticks out her tongue before hands settle on her hips.

Tense looks are shared behind Lup’s back as Taako goes up in a beautiful pyre over the water. She’s not wrong, after all. Even though they’ve known eachother for a decade at this point, their situation is so unique that despite spending the past 11 years together, everything feels so impermanent that there’s still a distance between them that wouldn’t exist, had they simply been friends for 11 years in one place.

Magnus makes a silent promise to himself that this year, he’s going to get to know Lup better- and hopefully, by extension, get to know a little more about Taako, too. He comes up beside her, aching to put a hand on her shoulder or arm or something, some kind of physical comfort, almost more for his sake than hers. But it doesn’t feel appropriate.

“By this time next year we’ll have him back,” he says, even though he doesn’t know that, and he knows she doesn’t know that, either. None of them know for sure, and it’ll be a festering ache in the back of their minds all year. He looks down at Lup, and then back out at the pyre, where the flames have climbed twenty feet. “What do you need right now?” he asks her. “Name anything. Something I can do.”

        she knows she’ll struggle this year, as much as lup is sure that she can manage a smile and pretend nothing is wrong until the weeks creep closer to reset — closer to the unsteady feeling in her gut that he might not come back — but she stops thinking about that. stops thinking about the thoughts that would drag her down in the months to come. they could take her down later, for now she had to find a distraction — grieving would get her no where.

        ‘    ——— i could go for something violent. or a nap for six months. both of them sound highly tempting. i’d go for some cuddles but that useless gay is out there and victim to temptation number one : violence.    ‘        she heaves a breath in before arms cross over her chest and lup spins herself to look at magnus before taking a quick glance back at the flames that were the remnants of her brother ( in this world, she has to keep reminding herself ).

        ‘    —— i could honestly go for a cry.    ‘        her voice is small, only audible from the quiet this world brought them all. but she takes a slow inhale again and forces back the urge.        ‘    i don’t want to though.    ‘

“Lup~ What a cute name! It rolls right off the tongue. Lup!” He sighed gleefully and after a moment of deep breathing through his nose, calmed himself. “It’s a pleasure meeting you, my dear. I only wish I’d known sooner that Sunny was going to have guests. He didn’t tell me you were coming aboard. If it’s alright for me to ask, why are you traveling with us for so long? I don’t mind! Could always use more beautiful ladies around.”

        ‘    well, i won’t call it a secret, since we’ve told a ton of other worlds but —    ‘        lup leans in closer to sanji, lips dangerously close to his ear as grins wide, corners of her lips upturned almost dangerously.        ‘    —— psyche !!    ‘        she leans back, laughing softly as she gets herself comfy against the railing again.        ‘    —— we’re here to hopefully stop the destruction of your world ad doing so, stop whats destroying it from destroying others. the light of creation lands, we catch it, we save your world from the hunger going monch monch to it too badly. you still take some damage of course.    ‘

     he’s spaced out for the most part; unable to take his lingering eyes off the horizon, body only functioning on auto-pilot. it took him a few minutes to realize just how silent it had been between them, just how separated from reality he was before lup finally broke the silence. her voice was a light in the darkness— darkness being unhealthy thoughts and visions he can’t take out of his mind.  “ hm? oh, uh, n-no, not really. to be honest, um, i th-think we should just leave it here. if they managed to kill e-everyone else off during the first week of our journey, the two of us wou-wouldn’t stand a chance. it’s pr-practically a suicide mission, going out there. ”  voice suddenly lowers as if he doesn’t want anyone to hear.  “ i don’t w-wanna carry out alone. ”

        she catches herself blinking and as much as lup wants to agree with his statement she’s never one to back down from a challenge that may help secure their lives — even if getting it may risk their lives even worse. but when barry whispers low, voice still audible but lup can barely catch it — she knows its a do or die trying to get the light now. she doesn’t want to leave him alone again, or ANYONE for that matter. so lup grins, a soft chuckle as she tucks hands behind her back and nods.        ‘    —— you have to give me one shot, bluejeans. i promise i’ll make it count.    ‘

        its been two months but lup can still clearly feel the pain of when the rest of the crew died that cycle.

        well, not everyone, she still had barry, even if the two mostly bonded over science by that point still. but this cycle wasn’t particularly kind, and its only the fourteenth one, it was still early for them both as far as they knew. lup had her hopes, she was going to make it through this all, everyone was going to ( and she was going to get those fifteen dollars back ). but this cycle  — this year just fell on them rougher than any other so far, even if you counted the hunger crashing down on them again and again.

        she finds herself taking a deep breath, chest resting on the railing at the front of the ship as she looked ahead. the starblaster was at a very rare halt currently, the two having a moment to breathe from their pursuers  —  the residents of this world weren’t very welcoming at all. they were the onces who had taken out the others  —  lucretia, magnus, davenport, merle ... taako. it still stings a bit to think about it but she shakes the thought, turning around on the rails before pushing herself forward and walking over to the other.

        ‘    have any ideas on how we can get the light yet ?? those assholes sure know how to piss a girl off.    ‘        //        @centurylived  ( we wanted a lonely cycle :)c )

               there’s a grin wide on her face as lup approaches him, she’s dressed in a well tailored suit and her hair is all tied up on her head. theres a wink from her before she straightens his tie and starts pushing him out of the door with two hands carefully placed on his chest.

               ‘    you aren’t going to DIE, its a DANCE. someone here decided to fit in for the year we had to play the part and now we’re DANCING not DYING. so unless you mean you are going to be slayed by my AMAZING dancing skills then your sweet ass is going to make it through the night. now come on, i’m going to dance until my feet fall off !!    ‘
