My take on TOTK Ganon 🤫

Finally finished an illustration 😭 I really wanted to draw a snowy winter scene and I couldn’t pass up drawing Ganon and Link enjoying hot springs in the Hebra mountains!

(sorry for adding a ramble here I just wanna use this as a jumping off point to some thoughts I've had about this haha) I think people generally miss the point of ghibli films and boil it down to 'grab a block of cheese and go on an adventure' (myself included tbh) and miss the grave of the fireflies/Pom Poko of it all. And I think they mean they'd like to see a serious animated film. The voice in ghibli films is pretty appealing as a kid and an adult, compared to most western animation companies that are like 'well, we need to follow the formula of '3 fart jokes and a dance number' at the end, and we can't make it too serious or kids will get scared, cause that's what the execs are paying for.' Personally, when I say "I'd love to see this as a ghibli film" it's because I'm extremely delusional and want to see someone actually tackle the more complicated questions and criticize the way hyrule power structures are set up, and if it's done by dreamworks or disney it'll be a 'so you're just unquestionably the ruler of hyrule and the Gerudo are the god-appointed, one-dimensional bad guys?" Looks to camera. "WELP, makes sense to me!" shrug and move on LOL. To me, the urge to see LoZ as a ghibli film is because the way a lot of their stories have characters working in harmony with nature feels very botw to me. Or it's how I'd like to see it represented, I suppose. And I'd like to see Ghibli's take on this post-apocalyptic society building itself back up. And most of all I wanna see it treated as an interesting story as opposed to a paint-by numbers, designed-by- committee movie to sell toys to little kids. ALL THAT BEING SAID I'm a dumb Canadian animator working on toddler tv, so I don't know how the animated film industry works in Japan. I'm sure/I know they have their own issues, and there are indie animation projects and whatnot breaking the mold, so I'm not saying Western media bad/Eastern media good or w/e. but I think that's partly where the desire for a ghibli zelda comes from. I just wish we could convince the money people here to treat films like this as something other than a license to print money lol. But I also realize I'm asking for something that isn't REALLY Zelda, this isn't what Zelda is *about*, so of course the movie was never gonna be that. Nintendo isn't interested in tackling these concepts, so naturally the films based on this property wouldn't be either. But! I hope people get inspired to make their own cool thing. Maybe someday down the line, the movie in my head will be real, even if it isn't a zelda film.

Honestly every time I see people comparing LoZ to Studio Ghibli films I am just more and more convinced that people can only process what they see on a surface level and why people can't engage in good faith criticism on some of LoZ's weaker points. They are so fundamentally different at their core that I never understood why anyone had ever said this to begin with.

ganon's ears

so ganondorf in ToTK has round ears, and at first I thought it was because he's from an era before the gerudo had started to develop more hylian-like traits after thousands of years of intermixing, but looking closer at the flashback scenes, it appears that all the gerudo (even kotake and koume) already had pointed ears back then. ganondorf is the only exception.

and like everything else about ganondorf in this game, there's like, zero explanation 😅

idk if this is some kind of sexual dimorphism, or if the ganondorf in ToTK is supposed to be the same ganon from previous games but resurrected??? although i doubt that it's the same ganon since he doesn't seem to recognize zelda, nor does he bring up his past beef with her and link.

so why is he like this? if the devs were worried about keeping him recognizable to the audience, he's had pointed ears before, most notably in twilight princess, so it's not like anyone would be confused by him having pointed ears in this game. also ganondorf is just impossible to confuse with anyone else LOL

another possibility is that originally, all the gerudo in the past were going to have rounded ears, but they forgot (or ultimately chose not) to make new designs/models for the female gerudo for these memory scenes and just re-used the ones from the present era. after all, most of the ancient female gerudo do not have speaking roles on screen. even the one female gerudo from the ancient past who does have a speaking role, the sage of lightning, literally wears a mask that covers her face.

also, the devs probably wanted to "otherize" ganondorf and distance himself from his own people. seriously, the non-relationship between ganondorf and the gerudo in ToTK is bizarre, but that's a topic for another post.
