Lissted’s 2017 Top North East England Digital/Tech Influencers on Twitter
In January 2016 we produced this list of the top influencers in the North East England Digital/Tech community. We got talking to Paul Lancaster recently about the list and whether it was time we took another look.
As previously the lists are based on influence within the North East digital and technology communities themselves i.e. the extent to which others in the those communities are likely to follow and interact with a particular account. There may be NE based accounts that don’t appear in these lists who have significant influence outside the North East, but who perhaps don’t invest the same amount of time building relationships in their backyard.
The results are based on over 650,000 Twitter relationships involving over 1,000 of the top ranked relevant Twitter accounts in the North East.
So here they are, our updated lists of the top digital and tech influencers.
We’re starting with the Top 30 Digital People. Over the next few days we will add the: top digital companies, organisations and agencies, media and people and organisations who aren’t specifically digital, but are very active and known in the community.
Let the arguments about positions and omissions commence! :)

Update 10/11/17 Other Key People, Organisations/Companies and Media added

Tweetsdistilled and Lissted are For Sale
The reaction to turning the Tweetsdistilled system off last February, and the response when we turned the Politics UK Distilled account on for the General Election, helped us to understand how loved it was.
We managed to secure assistance to turn the majority of the system back on in August. For various reasons we’ve decided to put the system and the Lissted application that powers it up for sale, so we can find someone who’s in a better position to exploit it fully.
A sad Valentine’s Day
On Valentine’s day this year we shut down Tweetsdistilled. We didn’t want to, but for various reasons we decided the time had come.
It was great we had so many people tell us how disappointed they were. Not because we wanted to disappoint them obviously, but because of how loved the service clearly was.
"The best idea on Twitter is about to shut down" Unless @jack saves it
At the time we also said that Twitter really needed to do something similar, to “find its pulse”.
General Election and PoliticsUKTD
Fast forward to April and Prime Minister Theresa May calls a snap general election. We couldn’t resist. We turned the PoliticsUK Distilled account back on.
We wanted to see what this would tell us about Twitter’s influence on the election outcome. And it told us a lot. It even got us into a Twitterstorm about gender in UK political journalism, on which we’ve just published some definitive research (Female UK Politics Journalists Impacted by Twitter Gender Glass Ceiling, Lissted Research Confirms).
The positive reaction to turning this account back on, made us wonder if there was a way we could get things up and running again.
What our followers say about PoliticsUKTD
Tweetsdistilled gets the support it needs
In August some third parties (who’d like to remain nameless, at least for now) agreed to help cover the data costs of running the service. So we quietly turned all the key accounts back on.
We’ve also created a few new ones to focus on areas such as political echo chambers and viral content. More about those in some future blog posts.
Tweetsdistilled is for sale
Now onto the other reason we turned it back on. We’ve decided to put Tweetsdistilled and the Lissted application that powers it, up for sale.
The experience of turning it off showed us its value, and at the same time demonstrated others might be in a better position to exploit it.
Also on a personal note some opportunities have come my way that I'd like to pursue and there's not enough of me to go around.
Anyone who’s interested in building on what we’ve created, including the world’s only real time Twitter filtering system, please contact our corporate finance advisers via Graham Dotchin at Tait Walker [email protected].
For now though we’ll continue to enjoy the brilliant tweets the Tweetsdistilled accounts identify every day, and watch out for more content about the insights it finds

Female UK Politics Journalists Impacted by Twitter Gender Glass Ceiling, Lissted Research Confirms
Tumblr media
Lissted, the influencer discovery and real-time Twitter filtering platform, has published in-depth research into the comparative retweet performance of male and female UK politics journalists during the 2017 General Election campaign period.
A summary of the report can be found here. To request a full copy of the report please email [email protected].
The research found male UK politics journalists received 4.3x more retweets from influential Twitter users compared to their female colleagues, and 4.9x more retweets from Twitter users as a whole.
The disparity was due to a combination of four main factors (relative importance in brackets): Demographics (37 per cent) – there are more male UK politics journalists on Twitter and male influencers are in the majority within the wider UK Politics Twitter community. In both cases the ratio was estimated to be approximately 5:3.
Following preference (12 per cent) – both male and female Twitter influencers were more likely to follow male journalists than female. Even after adjusting for demographics the ratio was 57:43 overall with male influencers exhibiting a slightly greater preference of 58:42 and female influencers slightly lower at 53:47.
Tweet volume (13 per cent) – the male journalist population tweet approximately 1.23 times more frequently on average than female journalists giving them more opportunity for retweets to occur.
Retweet preference (39 per cent) – both male and female Twitter influencers (and Twitter users as a whole) were more likely to retweet male journalists than female. Even after adjusting for the previous three factors the ratios were – Overall 67:33, Male Influencers 68:32, Female Influencers 65:35.
The research was carried out in response to the surprise generated by a finding in Lissted’s UK General Election 2017 Twitter Influencer analysis where the top ten journalists ranked in the analysis were all male.
Tumblr media
This previous study was based on tweets featured on the @PoliticsUKTD (Politics UK Distilled) Twitter account. The account is powered by Lissted’s Tweetsdistilled system which estimates and ranks the apparent influence of tweets and then retweets those it ranks the highest.
The PoliticsUKTD study was based on over 3 million tweets by influential Twitter users between 18th April 2017 and 7th June 2017. These tweets included retweets and replies to over 200,000 other accounts.
Lissted carried out this latest research to establish why this all male top 10 had been observed.
The analysis demonstrates the validity of this finding, indicating there is an observable glass ceiling effect when ranking the influence of female UK politics journalists.
Tumblr media
Other findings within the research included:
- Male journalists’ tweets included opinions more frequently than female journalists (57 per cent versus 48 per cent). The inclusion of opinions was positively correlated with increased retweets and likes, however it only explained a very small amount (0.5 per cent) of the variation in retweets and likes. - Only three female journalists (Laura Kuenssberg, Isabel Hardman and Sophy Ridge) ranked in the top 20 most followed accounts for both male and female influencers. This compares to 11 for the male journalists (Faisal Islam, Michael Crick, Robert Peston, Jon Snow, Fraser Nelson, Paul Waugh, Nick Robinson, Nick Sutton, Andrew Neil, Daniel Finkelstein and David Aaronovitch).
Commenting on the research Adam Parker, Founder of Lissted, said “The research shows that Twitter conversation in relation to UK Politics potentially suffers from a significant degree of bias in favour of the opinions and reporting of male journalists. As Twitter can often be a source of stories and commentary for the wider media, this may also impact wider political coverage and discourse in general.”
The research focussed on the retweeting and following behaviour of influencers, due to their disproportionate ability to amplify voices on Twitter.
For example the analysis estimates, a shift of 17 per cent in the retweet ratio of the 1,076 (one in ten) influencers who were most active retweeters, and had an adjusted male:female retweet ratio of 50 per cent or more, would have resulted in a 44 per cent improvement in the relative amplification of female journalists.
Adam Parker continued: “A more mindful approach to retweeting by a relatively small number of influencers could have a considerable impact on the relative gender balance of political conversation on Twitter. It was interesting to note the heavily male biased retweet ratio of some of those who were most vocal in their response to the all-male top 10. This may indicate a lack of mindfulness about their own behaviour in this regard.”
Data and work performed
The analysis was based on the tweets and retweets of 829 UK journalists (518 male, 311 female) between 18th April 2017 – 7th June 2017 – the same period as the previous PoliticsUKTD GE2017 analysis.
Journalist populations: 518 male journalists and 311 female journalists identified based on a combination of appearance in the GE2017 analysis; crowdsourced suggestions and Lissted’s database of 4 million influencers.
Tweets identified: 62,192 tweets by the journalists selected for the analysis based on having been retweeted at least once by one of the tens of thousands of influencers tracked by Lissted. These tweets were retweeted 198,798 times by 10,774 influencers and retweeted or liked over 17 million times by Twitter users as a whole.
Follower relationship analysis: based on a sample of the most active retweeting influencers.
Notes:
Influencer retweets as well as retweets and likes across Twitter as a whole were the main focus of the research as engagement of this nature amplifies the voice and message of the individual concerned. Replies to a tweet and quote tweets may also do this, but can equally be variable in the extent to which they promote the user concerned.
Gender classification: influencer gender identified based on a combination of name and/or manual verification.

Comparative Analysis of Gender on Twitter in relation to UK Politics Journalists
To request a copy of the full report please email [email protected].
Highlights
Tumblr media

Implication - A glass ceiling effect is observed when ranking the influence of female journalists, meaning Twitter conversation in relation to UK Politics is potentially biased in favour of the opinions and reporting of male journalists.
Potential action to address issue - A more mindful approach to retweeting by a relatively small number of influencers could have a considerable impact. A shift of 17 per cent in the retweet ratio of the 1,076 (one in ten) influencers who were most active retweeters, and had a male retweet ratio of 50 per cent or more, would have led to a 44 per cent improvement in the relative amplification of female journalists.
Background
PoliticsUKTD GE2017 Analysis
In late June 2017 Lissted produced an analysis of influential Twitter users in relation to the UK General Election 2017 (Appendix 2). The analysis was based on tweets featured on the @PoliticsUKTD (Politics UK Distilled) Twitter account. This account is powered by Lissted’s Tweetsdistilled system which estimates and ranks the apparent influence of tweets and then retweets those it ranks the highest.
The PoliticsUKTD study was based on over 3 million tweets by influential Twitter users between 18th April 2017 and 7th June 2017. These tweets included retweets and replies to over 200,000 other accounts.
The Tweetsdistilled application tracked every tweet in real time, using its proprietary algorithm to seek out the ones that looked to have the most potential for influence.
Out of these 3 million tweets over 27,000 were rated of high significance. Based on an analysis of key terms used over 14,000 tweets from 2,756 different Twitter accounts were assessed as directly or indirectly related to the General Election campaign. Between them these tweets were retweeted or liked over 21.2 million times. These 14,000+ high rated tweets were summarised into three Top 100 lists.
All-Male Journalist Top 10
One of the findings of the analysis was that the top ten journalists featured in the rankings were all male. The overwhelming response to the tweet stating this was one of surprise.
Tumblr media
As is often the case, the resulting Twitterstorm didn’t involve a great deal of discussion about the underlying analysis. In fact evidence from the response suggests people mistakenly thought the list had been curated, when in fact it was based on objective engagement criteria.
In response we tweeted an explanation of the basis of the findings and suggested some possible underlying causes.
Some observers did engage with the work, including researcher Laura Jones who highlighted a study on gender bias on Twitter and wrote this post Authority, Influence and the Twitter Glass Ceiling, which we strongly recommend reading.
The analysis carried out looks at the issues raised by Laura’s post and the suggestions we made about potential sources of bias.
NB: Influencer retweets and Retweets and Likes across Twitter as a whole were the main focus of the research as engagement of this nature amplifies the voice and message of the individual concerned. Replies to a tweet and quote tweets, may also do this, but can equally be variable in the extent to which they promote the user concerned.
Gender classification: influencer gender identified based on a combination of name and/or manual verification.
Analysis of the follower relationships of a sample of these influencers in connection with the journalists.
Key findings
Male UK politics journalists received 4.3x more retweets from influencers than female journalists. They received 4.9x more retweets and likes combined across Twitter as a whole.
Implying male UK politics journalists voices were considerably more likely to be heard than female journalists.
The analysis identified five of the factors that contributed to this disparity:
-          demographics; -          following behaviour of influencers; -          retweeting behaviour of influencers; -          opinions in tweets; and -          frequency of tweeting.
Demographics
Summary: Male UK politics journalists on Twitter outnumber female. Around 5 male journalists for every 3 female journalists. On average they have more followers and tweet more often.
The gender imbalance towards male representation in the wider UK political community is an added factor due to male influencers having an even greater propensity to favour following and retweeting male journalists than female influencers do.
Demographics would appear to be one of the most significant area of inherent disadvantage for female UK politics journalists on Twitter. We found less of them with the minimum criteria we set of 1,000 followers (ratio 1.67 male to female). The accounts included in the analysis had less followers on average (ratio 1.18 male to female, based on median followers) and tweet less often (ratio 1.23 male to female based on status updates and profile age).
Third party feedback and additional research after this analysis was carried out highlighted some gaps in the populations totalling 104 more journalists. If these journalists had been included the relative male to female ratio would have fallen to 1.54x from 1.67x. However this feedback was mostly focussed on identifying additional female journalists therefore the 1.67x factor has been maintained within the analysis. Analysis was also carried out on these 104 additional journalists which established that their inclusion in the full analysis would not have materially impacted the reports key findings.
The demographics of the UK political community as a whole would also appear to be a factor. This is illustrated by the make-up of the influencer group. The ratio of male to female influencers was 69 per cent to 31 per cent. This is broadly consistent with studies of gender representation in UK politics. For example in the current UK parliament women account for 32 per cent of MPs.
This representation imbalance is a factor in both following and retweeting behaviour (see below) as male influencers have an even higher degree of propensity to follow and retweet male journalists over female than female influencers do.
Following behaviour of influencers
Summary: Both male and female influencer groups analysed exhibited an overall tendency to follow male journalists more frequently than female journalists. Even after adjusting for demographics the ratio was 57:43.
The additional amplification influential Twitter users can give to a tweet can be a causal factor in a tweet gaining greater reaction across Twitter as a whole. Our own tweet that started this conversation is anecdotal evidence of this.
Being followed by influencers is clearly of some advantage when it comes to being retweeted by them. This finding was underlined by regression analysis which showed follower levels were statistically significant as a predictor of retweets and likes.
Analysis of samples of male and female influencers looking at the relative number of male and female journalists they followed found that even after adjusting for the demographic 518:311 split, 82 per cent of the male sample and 66 per cent of the female sample followed more male journalists than female. The overall ratios being 57 per cent male, 43 per cent female for the influencers as a whole and 58:42 for male influencers and 53:47 for female influencers respectively.
To illustrate the impact of this only three female journalists (Laura Kuenssberg, Isabel Hardman and Sophy Ridge) ranked in the top 20 most followed accounts for both male and female influencers. This compares to 11 for the male journalists (Faisal Islam, Michael Crick, Robert Peston, Jon Snow, Fraser Nelson, Paul Waugh, Nick Robinson, Nick Sutton, Andrew Neil, Daniel Finkelstein and David Aaronovitch).
Retweeting behaviour of influencers
Summary: Both male and female influencers as groups showed an overall tendency to retweet male journalists more frequently than female. Even after attempting to adjust for demographics, following preference and tweet volume (see below) the ratio was 63:37.
This tendency was more pronounced in the male influencer group by approximately 7-9 per cent.
Our analysis of retweets by influencers showed that female journalists received less amplification of their tweets by influencers (ratio 81:19 male to female). Even after adjusting for the demographics, following bias issues noted above, and the higher tweet volumes of male journalists, the ratio was 63:37.
This observation was more pronounced in the male influencer group with the analysis indicating approximately a 7-9 per cent increase in the male:female ratio of retweets for male influencers.
The gender split of the influencers themselves was 69 per cent male, 31 per cent female. As discussed above, despite progress in recent years towards greater balance within the UK Politics community evidence such as the relative number of UK MPs - 68 per cent male, 32 per cent female – indicates a significant gender imbalance still exists. The gender split of the influencers observed in the analysis appears to reflect this.
Combined with the greater likelihood of male influencers to retweet male journalists, this further demographic bias also exacerbates the retweeting effect.
Opinions in tweets
Summary: Tweets where the author themselves expressed an opinion correlated with greater retweets and likes.
A high proportion of both male and female journalists’ tweets included opinions. However male (57 per cent) journalist tweets included opinions more frequently than female (48 per cent).
Regression analysis on the tweet data indicated that tweets that include opinions are more likely to correlate with greater retweets and likes across Twitter.
In the samples analysed male journalists’ tweets included opinions more frequently (57.0 per cent versus 48.0 per cent).
Clearly this demonstrates that many female journalists in the analysis frequently express opinions. The lower level compared to the male journalists is therefore a further contributing factor to the ultimately lower level of engagement received during the period.
However when quantifying the impact of this factor it appears to be significantly less than the other four. The analysis predicts that if the same proportion of female journalist tweets had been opinionated it would have resulted in an increase of only 0.5 per cent in total retweets and likes.
It’s important to note that the analysis didn’t look at the replies to tweets, focussing on the extent to which a journalist’s tweets were amplified. A recent study by Amnesty International looked at the extent to which politicians are harassed or abused on Twitter. It found that women politicians received a much greater level of such response. This apparent bias in online abuse could be a contributing factor to the lower level of opinionated tweets by the female journalists in the analysis. This requires further study to validate.
Frequency of tweeting
Summary: Male journalists tweet more frequently than female journalists. This increases the likelihood that they will be retweeted, enhancing their aggregate Twitter engagement.
Regression analysis on the aggregated journalist results indicated that being male and tweeting more frequently were both positively correlated with having a greater number of tweets that were retweeted at least once by an influencer in the period.
The first observation is consistent with the finding regarding influencers being more likely to retweet men and the second demonstrates how the higher apparent update frequency of the male group lead to a greater reaction in the aggregate.
Summary
The relative importance of the four main factors identified above (excluding opinions) in explaining the disparity in amplification between the male and female journalists are summarised below.
Tumblr media
The demographics of the UK political journalist community (36.8 per cent) and retweeting behaviour (38.5 per cent) are the two most significant factors identified that lead to UK Politics female journalists’ voices being less prominent in Twitter conversation.
Each of these factors is three times more important than either following preference (12.1 per cent) or the extent to which male journalists tweet more (12.6 per cent).
Implications
Summary: A glass ceiling effect is observed when ranking the influence of female journalists, meaning Twitter conversation in relation to UK Politics is potentially biased in favour of the opinions and reporting of male journalists.
The combination of the factors above has the potential to make male journalists rank significantly higher in analysis of Twitter reaction. This is consistent with what was observed in the PoliticsUKTD
GE2017 analysis, effectively producing a glass ceiling effect where the representation of female journalists reduces as you get higher up the rankings.
Tumblr media
Whilst there are many female journalists who have high followings and receive a significant level of reaction on Twitter, the factors identified mean there are less of them and they are less likely to achieve the level of aggregate engagement and exposure as their male colleagues.
Twitter conversation in relation to UK Politics therefore potentially suffers from a significant degree of bias in favour of the opinions and reporting of male journalists. As Twitter can often be a source of stories and commentary for the wider media, this may also impact wider political coverage and discourse in general.
Potential action to address the issue
Summary: A more mindful approach to retweeting by a relatively small number of influencers could have a considerable impact.
A shift of 17 per cent in the retweet ratio of the 1,076 (one in ten) influencers who were most active retweeters, and had a male retweet ratio of 50 per cent or more, would have led to a 44 per cent improvement in the relative amplification of female journalists.
As changes in demographics generally take a significant amount of time, the analysis suggests the quickest route to reduce the observed gender imbalance would be a more mindful approach by influencers – male and female – to their following and retweeting behaviour.
Based on the analysis, a change of following and retweeting behaviour of influencers towards female journalists could have a material impact, due to their disproportionate ability to amplify voices. It was interesting to note the heavily male biased retweet ratio of some of those who were most (negatively) vocal in their response to the all-male top 10. This may indicate a lack of mindfulness about their own behaviour in this regard.
For example, a shift of 17 per cent in the retweet ratio of the 1,076 (one in ten) influencers who were most active retweeters, and had a male retweet ratio of 50 per cent or more, would have resulted in a 44 per cent improvement in the relative amplification of female journalists.
Areas for further investigation
More detailed work on tweet content to explain more of the variance in engagement could shed light on other potential causes of gender differences. Areas could include: political affiliation, associated media outlet, topics covered and timing of tweet.
Consideration of the nature of reply engagement towards different genders and how this may impact on tweet frequency and the expression of opinions would also be worthy of further study.

How big an issue are influential unverified Twitter accounts?
Summary
On 30th August 2017 the Times ran a front page article saying "evidence suggests" the Twitter account @DavidJo52951945 (now @DavidJoBrexit) is "a suspected Russian troll posing as a UKIP supporter". Doubt has been expressed about the accuracy of this conclusion by a number of commentators.
Either way, evidence does point to this account being significant within right wing communities on Twitter. And the identity of who's behind the account remains unknown (at the time of posting).
Twitter operates a "verified" programme which confirms the identity of accounts. Obviously DavidJo52951945 is an unverified account
Research by Lissted has identified thousands of other unverified accounts on Twitter that, like DavidJoBrexit, have more than 100,000 followers. 26 of the top ranked accounts (1 in 5) in our recent General Election 2017 analysis are also unverified at the time of writing, four of these accounts have more than 100,000 followers.
Does Twitter need to take more action to ensure all influential accounts are verified, or do the benefits of less regulated social media outweigh the risks?
DavidJo52951945 and The Times
On 30th August 2017 The Times ran an article on its front page saying "evidence suggests" the Twitter account @DavidJo52951945 (now @DavidJoBrexit) is "a suspected Russian troll posing as a UKIP supporter". It was largely based on a Twitter thread by an anonymous account, @Conspirator0. @Conspirator0’s bio says they’re a data scientist.

I highly recommend you read the thread to see the full analysis, but the main elements of the argument focussed on:
- timing of the account’s tweets being claimed to correlate to Moscow office hours;
- the flow of subject matter and messaging being tweeted over time;
- account username ending in an 8 digit number being indicative of bot or troll accounts (probably because it’s a format of standard suggestions when you create a new username); and
- the account being a key node in a network of 63,000 accounts with similar 8 digit usernames.
Here's the follower network formed by those 63099 accounts. Larger circle = more accounts with the 8-digit numbers among its followers. pic.twitter.com/gBAlS0Lttq

Not everyone was convinced. Some examples being:
Alex Hern, Technology features writer for the Guardian expressed his scepticism in this thread
I’ve also been in touch with one person – a UKIP councillor – who says he’s met the man who posted the ballot picture.

the account @hughster provided some alternative evidence in this thread

DavidJo52951945's influence
There is evidence showing @DavidJoBrexit is potentially an influential account. For example:
- he ranked 14th in our recent 2017 General Election analysis based on influential tweets analysed by our Tweetsdistilled application and featured on our @PoliticsUKTD account;
- ranks 5th in Lissted’s UKIP community based on the follower networks of over 500 of the top ranking UKIP related accounts (after Nigel Farage, UKIP’s party account, Robert Kimbell aka @RedHotSquirrel and Patrick O’Flynn)
- his tweets have been used to illustrate articles by MSM e.g. Telegraph, Huffington Post, BBC and (perhaps surprisingly) even The Canary; and (as of 4th September 2017)
- he’s followed by high profile figures including Eamonn Holmes, Leave EU, Kate Hoey MP and prospective UKIP leadership candidate, Anne Marie Waters.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile his bio and profile tell you virtually nothing about who he is.
None of this tells you if he’s a Russian agent or not.
But it does provide evidence he’s been using Twitter as a platform to build influence and we know virtually nothing about who he is.
Twitter verification
According to a recent report on The Next Web, there are around 270,000 verified accounts on Twitter. This is where Twitter has carried out various checks to establish the identity of the person tweeting. Followers then have greater confidence the account is genuine and it also provides some protection from passing off by others for the individual concerned.
Twitter initially only verified accounts relating to celebrities, politicians, top brands, key public sector bodies and some high profile journalists. It then began to expand who it verified and last year even opened up the process so that anyone can request to be verified, although that doesn’t mean they will.
Other Unverified Accounts in PoliticsUKTD GE2017 Analysis
DavidJo52951945 wasn’t the only unverified account to rank highly in our analysis of tweets in relation to the 2017 UK General Election.
134 accounts appeared in either the Top 100 accounts based on number of influential tweets or the Top 100 based on retweets and likes.
Of these 108 were verified, but 26 (including DavidJo) were not.
The other accounts were (followers in brackets):
- NHSMillion (227,616) - britainelects (156,560) - V_of_Europe (152,230) - JeremyCorbyn4PM (140,459) - davidallengreen (113,178) - ToryFibs (88,751) - ShippersUnbound (73,701) - AngryScotland (previously AngrySalmond) (73,061) - JamesMelville (64,877) - hrtbps (63,401) - RichardJMurphy (45,157) - Rachael_Swindon (44,554) - MSmithsonPB (43,455) - PickardJE (40,016) - AaronBastani (37,396) - mikegalsworthy (33,059) - imajsaclaimant (32,482) - RedHotSquirrel (31,677) - thepileus (31,145) - EL4JC (17,673) - DavidPrescott (12,002) - GAPonsonby (11,546) - ReclaimTheNews (11,283) - BrianElects (8,007) - DaveWardGS (6,806)
These accounts are from across the political spectrum. They include quite a number that are pretty obvious who they relate to e.g. Jim Pickard, David Allen Green, Tim Shipman (Shippers Unbound) and Richard Murphy.
But they also include a number of accounts where, like DavidJo52951945, the tweeter is either completely anonymous or there’s very little information about them that’s readily available.
I asked a couple of the most high profile accounts - Jim Pickard and David Allen Green - if they'd been approached by Twitter regarding verification. Both confirmed they they didn't believe they had.

High reach unverified accounts
So we've seen that there are influential accounts that aren't verified. Even ones with a high reach of 100,000+ followers.
To see how many more we could find we searched in Lissted’s database of potentially influential Twitter accounts for any that matched the following criteria:
- 100,000 or more followers
- Last tweeted date is after 1 June 2017
- Not Protected status (so all their tweets are public)
- Not Verified by Twitter
- Have a time zone relating to North America, Europe, Australia or no time zone is stated.
- Tweeted at least 10 times.
As of 4th September 2017 this produced a list of 14,710 accounts.
At this stage I should point out that just because an account has a high follower number doesn’t mean it’s influential. And vice versa. In fact this is something we’ve been highly vocal about since we started.
There are many more accounts with smaller reach that we would consider influential as we saw illustrated with the GE2017 analysis.
However for this exercise we’ve taken this highly simplistic approach because it provides a degree of consistency with the reach of DavidJoBrexit*.
Statistics about these unverified accounts
In aggregate these accounts have:
- 615 million statuses
- 4.1 billion followers
- 0.7 billion accounts they follow
- 158 million likes
- Appear on over 14 million lists
Some example accounts:
- Highest followers @UberSoc 13.5 million.
- Most updates @reizonation 2.846 million. Average of one tweet every 1.6 minutes since the account was started.
- Most Likes @Khanoisseur 882,500. Average of one every 3.6 minutes since the account started.
- Oldest account @caroline joined on 14 July 2006.
- Newest account @PyrocynicalVEVO joined on 28 June 2017.
What sort of accounts are on the list?
There’s a diverse range of accounts on the list.
Celebrities e.g. @AlanCarr and @Daraobriain
Meme e.g. @GirlPosts and @SoDamnTrue
“Pics” e.g. @Earth_Pics and @HistoricalPics
“Quotes” e.g. @RelatableQuote and @GreatestQuotes
Cats (of course) e.g. @EmrgencyKittens
And a whole host of others including the four accounts in the GE2017 analysis with 100,000+ followers.
Many of the accounts will just be tweeting harmless content.
Many will be copycat accounts of the meme, pics and quotes etc. type above.
I’d guess a good number have a high fake follower quotient.
Some will have been playing the follow others and they’ll follow you back game to make themselves appear more significant than they are.
But are they all harmless? What if like DavidJoBrexit some of these accounts are sharing content of a more significant nature and their followers include a lot of real people who are actively engaging with the account and its content? What if some of those followers are influential in their own right?
In such situations is it important that followers know more about the identity, nature and potential motivations of whoever is behind such accounts?
Plus as I said earlier this is just an arbitrary list based on a simplistic follower cut off. As indicated by the GE2017 analysis there are potentially many more unverified accounts that are influential with less than 100,000 followers.
Lissted’s application has the capability of producing lists of these accounts, as I’m sure will some other influencer applications.
Does Twitter need to take action?
Twitter is demonstrably an influential platform.
If Lissted can identify accounts where verification may be of benefit then I'm confident Twitter has the capability to do so.
Twitter's verification activities have addressed a large number of high profile and influential accounts, but it appears from this research there are still a significant number who remain unverified.
There's an important balance to be struck here between the comparative risks and benefits of verification and anonymity.
As mentioned above David Allen Green, lawyer and journalist (and one of the most influential UK accounts on Brexit and legal matters in general), hasn't been approached by Twitter to be verified. He also hasn't requested to be verified himself. He was kind enough to share his views on verification with me.
"I have not sought a blue tick for three reasons.
"First, it does not cause inconvenience. The lack of a tick does not affect how I use Twitter. If this changes, and it becomes inconvenient, then I may well resign myself to getting one.
"Second, the methods I use to assess the credibility of an account do not include the tick. There are some outstanding accounts with no blue tick and some dreadful ones with one. I prefer to use peer recommendation, shared followers, tone of timeline, and use of supporting links.
"Social media can be egalitarian, and many good accounts rise by merit alone. Some of the best accounts on Brexit, for example, are under pseudonyms - but the content is verifiable and spot-on. A caste system goes against this.
"Third, blue ticks are a form of regulation, and social media is better when there is less regulation. Yes there is vile nastiness, but there are also valuable things being said every day which would not otherwise be heard. I am not suggesting there should be no regulation, but there is the risk that good things are lost when you try and ban bad things or impose a tiered system."
These are good arguments, but are they all applicable for the vast majority of Twitter users? Most users spend very little time on the platform and I wonder how many are as diligent and expert in their assessment of an account and its content as David?
If Twitter was to require all influential accounts to be verified this would clearly present some challenges where anonymity is important and beneficial.
There's also the question of where to draw the line on what constitutes "influential"?
And if influential account owners aren't prepared to be verified then should Twitter go as far as to consider suspending their access?
These are tricky questions. But when suggestions are made about the impact of social media on major real world events is it a greater risk to allow influential accounts to operate either anonymously or without followers knowing if the user is who they claim to be?
* This number is also restricted to accounts that appear in Lissted's database of 4.2 million. It's possible there are more accounts that would match this criteria that Lissted hasn't identified.

Only two accounts appear in the Top 100 for all three criteria. These accounts achieved an impressive performance of featuring on PoliticsUKTD over 30 times during the campaign, achieving over 100,000 retweets and likes across these influential tweets despite having relatively low follower counts (compared to many of the other influencers) of circa 20,000 and 15,000 respectively.
@LiamYoung bio - Political commentary at @Independent, @VICE, @NewStatesman, @theipaper and others. Also studying at the London School of Economics. @EL4JC bio - Their videos are ❤️" - Owen Jones. "Heroes of the Election" - Red Labour.  "Factionalists" - Ealing Labour."
@EL4JC was only created in August 2016 and focuses on sharing video content.
Content comparison - @Conservatives v @JeremyCorbyn
The word clouds below compare the top 50 terms (excluding frequently used terms) featured in the high ranked tweets by the @Conservatives (blue) with those used in the @jeremycorbyn (red) tweets.
Tumblr media
The most striking difference is “Brexit”. This is the #1 term in the @Conservatives tweets and doesn’t even feature in the top 50 of the Jeremy Corbyn tweets.
In fact the term appeared in less than 2 per cent of his tweets during the campaign.
In contrast Brexit appeared in 44 per cent of @Conservatives account tweets.
General election related tweet with the highest number of retweets and likes
The top ranked tweet based on retweets and likes featured on PoliticsUKTD during the election was this one highlighting the reaction on Facebook to the Prime Minister Theresa May's Facebook live interview with Robert Peston.
It's viral nature demonstrated by the 135,000 retweets and likes it received, dwarfing creator Ben Skipper's 2,000 followers.

Background
@PoliticsUKTD is one of the Twitter accounts powered by Tweetsdistilled, Lissted’s unique real time Twitter curation application.
The application had been dormant since the Tweetsdistilled experiment was ended back in February.
We decided to turn the PoliticsUKTD account back on when the snap UK General Election was announced as we were curious to see what it would highlight as being signficant.
Here's how Sathnam Sanghera of The Times described the account this week

Data and analysis
PoliticsUKTD’s results were based on the tweets of thousands of the top influencers in relation to UK Politics from right across the political spectrum. During the campaign period (18th April 2017 - 7th June 2017 inclusive) these influencers tweeted over 3 million times, including retweeting and replying to over 200,000 other accounts.
The Tweetsdistilled application tracked every tweet in real time, seeking out the ones that looked to have the most potential for influence. This assessment is based on a number of factors including who is reacting and the scope and velocity of that reaction.
This means to rank highly a tweet needs to be getting the attention of a lot of influential people, the wider Twitter community or preferably both.
Out of these 3 million tweets over 27,000 (around 500-600 per day) were rated of high significance. Based on an analysis of key terms used over 14,000 tweets from 2,756 different Twitter accounts were assessed as directly or indirectly related to the campaign. Between them these tweets were retweeted or liked over 21.2 million times.
NB: Unsurprisingly, a signficant number of high rated tweets in the campaign period were related to the tragic events in Manchester and London. Tweets that referenced parties and/or their leaders in relation to the attacks were included within the 14,000+ tweets used to produce the lists.
We summarised the 14,000+ high rated tweets into three Top 100 lists. To qualify for consideration an account needed to have a minimum of four tweets rated as high significance with an aggregate retweet and like count of greater than 1,000.
Full details of the lists are in this Google Sheet which is also embedded below
- Top 100 Accounts based on the total retweets and likes of their high rated tweets.

Y Combinator Community’s Top 300 Influencers
Tumblr media
On the recommendation of Andrew Smith, I’ve been reading Chaos Monkeys by Antonio Garcia Martinez. It’s a great read about startups, Silicon Valley and in particular, Facebook.
Antonio’s own startup, Adgrok, was backed by Y Combinator. For anyone who doesn’t know, Y Combinator (YC) is a seed accelerator programme, arguably THE seed accelerator programme. YC has been described as “a spawning ground for emerging tech giants”. YC has invested in over 1,000 companies with $bn successes including Airbnb, Dropbox and Stripe.
Its network of alumni and investors therefore includes a significant number of influential members of the tech community. Search in LinkedIn and you will currently find 6,632 results.
So I thought it would be interesting to see who Lissted ranks as influential in relation to this community.
Y Combinator Top Influencers
Tumblr media
I suspect the top few results are boringly predictable to anyone who knows YC. If that’s true it also means they must be accurate, and so likely to be immediately of use to someone who doesn’t.
#1 Sam Altman has been Y Combinator’s President since 2014.
#2 Y Combinator’s own account. Obvious you might say, but then I tried searching in a competing tool and it didn’t even appear in the top 40.
#3 Paul Graham, YC’s (probably best known) co-founder.
#4 Justin Kan, founder of Twitch (another YC success story) and partner at Y Combinator.
Influencers with a range of affinity to YC
In the full list of 300 below, accounts shown in blue are rated as having a strong affinity to the Y Combinator community.
These are often YC founders, team members and partners such as Jessica Livingston, Aaron Harris, Paul Buchheit or Kat Manalac and YC alumni including Airbnb’s Brian Chesky, Stripe’s John Collison and Mattermark’s Danielle Morrill. Antonio himself appears in this group.
The other influencers within the community rated as having a lower specific affinity range from celebrities and politicians such as Barack Obama, Donald Trump and the New York Times, technology ViPs including Elon Musk, Tim Cook and Bill Gates, required startup reading like Techcrunch and high profile investors like Chris Sacca, Hunter Walk and Mark Suster.
So, without further ado, here’s the full list. You can view full details on the Google sheet here.

Methodology
Lissted selected around 500 Twitter accounts assessed as relevant to Y Combinator from its database of 4.1 million potential influencers. It then analysed their network relationships and recent interactions, applying its own community algorithm, to establish the individuals and organisations that appear to matter most to this group.

@realDonaldTrump is Twitter’s No.1: Top 100 Accounts according to Tweetsdistilled
Analysis based on data from (arguably) the longest running study of influence on Twitter, Tweetsdistilled, shows the scale of Donald Trump’s impact on the platform.
Not only does his @realdonaldtrump account rank No.1 on the list of the Top 100 accounts based on activity between 1 June 2015 (the month he declared his candidature) and 18 January 2017 (just before his inauguration), but the gap between him and No.2 on the list, his opponent Hillary Clinton, is considerable.

How the list was calculated
Tweetsdistilled seeks to only share tweets of potential significance (see below for background on the application and more detail on the methodology and data).
Accounts were ranked based on:
Sum total of retweets and likes relating to tweets shared by Tweetsdistilled
This means that it isn't the total for all the tweets by the user, just the ones that Tweetsdistilled saw fit to share.
For example Harry Styles tweeted 42 times in 2016, but Tweetsdistilled only featured 5 of them (and 11 across the whole 19 month period).
The most popular was this tweet celebrating his 22nd birthday and at the same time causing ripples across the Internet by referencing his previous romance with Taylor Swift.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harry's tweets that Tweetsdistilled hasn't seen fit to share are mostly ones that fans might find interesting, but probably didn’t capture the attention of many others e.g
Tumblr media
Why Donald Trump is No.1
Donald Trump ranks highly because of a combination of volume and reaction.
Volume
A high volume (2,115) of his tweets during the period were ranked as significant and consequently shared by Tweetsdistilled. This includes tweets like this one early in his campaign for the Republican nomination with only hundreds of reactions.
Tumblr media
That tweet came in response to Bloomberg's Halperin and Heilemann's assessment that he was gaining traction due to his "Xenophobic Message". Something that looks a pretty good call with hindsight.
Reaction
As his Twitter following grew over the period leading up to the election the level of reaction steadily increased as this graph shows:
Tumblr media
with this tweet in the early hours of election day achieving the most reaction.
Tumblr media
A full list of the @realdonaldtrump tweets shared by Tweetsdistilled in the period is here.
Comparison with the rest of the Top 10
Tumblr media
The graph shows how significant the US Presidential Election has been on Twitter with four of the top ten accounts being relevant (@realDonaldTrump, @HillaryClinton, @BernieSanders and @SenSanders).
Hillary was no match for Donald on Twitter
Tumblr media
Donald Trump’s impact is rated as more than twice that of Hillary Clinton, despite the volume of tweets featured in Tweetsdistilled being greater in Hillary’s case. Implying his key tweets garnered more attention from a wider audience.
Background
Lissted’s Tweetsdistilled application was originally intended as a short experiment. After running for two and a half years it may well represent the longest running study of influence on Twitter.
The objective was to design a system to identify the best of Twitter, focussing predominantly on English language tweets. It appears to do a pretty good job as its single largest group of followers is Twitter related people.
To be featured on Tweetsdistilled a tweet will generally relate to breaking news, influential discussions, comedy and sometimes the downright bizarre. They are tweets that are really getting people talking both on and offline, or are likely to be generating wider media coverage.
In the time it’s been running the application has analysed a data set of over 500 million tweets (or 10 billion, if you include retweets).
From these millions of tweets the application’s algorithms have selected just 0.1% to share on its two main accounts - @Tweetsdistilled (focussed on reaction of UK users) and @USTweetsDistill (US focussed).
73,000 Twitter users have been featured at least once and the total of retweets and likes combined for the featured tweets is almost 2 billion.

Twitter’s Greatest Moments of the last 100 days
Twitter’s Moments feature has been live for a little over a year. We thought we’d look at the Moments that have generated the most reaction from influential Twitter users and the wider community.
Here are our Top 40 from the 100 days ending last Friday, 4th November.
Unsurprisingly many of the Moments were curated by Twitter's own team. However some were produced by brands such as Manchester United and Siemens and a few by individual users, now that anyone can create them.
The ratings are based on a combination of sharing by Lissted influencers and wider engagement in the form of retweets and favourites

Tweetdistilled: Twitter’s “best kept secret”
Tumblr media
@Tweetsdistilled, Lissted's auto-curated stream of top tweets is followed by 23 Twitter staff and alumni. It's the only Twitter account followed by all of them, with even Jack Dorsey only being followed by 19.
The account has been called Twitter's "best kept secret", the "BBC Radio 4 of Twitter" and "one of the best ways to find out what are the key things happening on Twitter at any given moment".
Suggesting its recipe for finding great tweets must be pretty good!
The Idea
Two years ago Lissted setup a Twitter account - @tweetsdistilled.
We did it to try out an experiment. We wanted to see if we could auto curate Twitter to find some of the most interesting and influential tweets.
Unlike other services that surface Twitter, Tweetsdistilled is not a simple popularity contest. It's not about getting a certain number of favourites, or the total retweets a tweet receives.
The account automatically retweets items it thinks are of interest based on various signals. In particular it utilises Lissted’s ability to identify influential members of communities.
You can see examples of the top viral tweets it identified during 2015 here.
Initially the account covered both the UK and US. Later we changed things so that the @tweetsdistilled account is more UK biased and a separate account @USTweetsDistill focuses on the US.
Auto curate specific Twitter communities
We subsequently set up some more accounts as experiments to auto curate specific communities or topics.
These include: @PoliticsUKTD, @PoliticsUSTD, @HealthUKTD, @EducationUKTD, @AppleTwD and @WalesUKTD.  Recently we’ve added a few more: @NUFCTD, @LogisticsTD and @PRUKDistilled.
The NUFC one is simply because I’m a Newcastle United fan!
These niche accounts are followed by many relevant influential people and organisations.
People who know about UK Politics, know about @PoliticsUKTD. pic.twitter.com/w4YtAb8hSW
— PoliticsUKDistilled (@PoliticsUKTD)
14 July 2016
Twitter people seem to like Tweetsdistilled
But back to the main account @Tweetsdistilled. We’ve never gone out of our way to follow people. Restricting this to just following back some key accounts. However, over time it has slowly attracted a moderate following of 1,300+.
Within these followers are 23 accounts relating to Twitter staff and alumni.
This seems like quite a high number so we thought, “let’s see who else these 23 accounts follow?”
You can see a list of the 23 accounts here.
Between them they follow over 32,000 different accounts.
This table shows the number of members of the 23 accounts that follow the same accounts.
Tumblr media
For example 55 accounts are followed by 9 of the 23 accounts.
Only 1 account, @Tweetsdistilled obviously, is followed by all of them.
The Top 10 most followed accounts are:
Tumblr media
So apart from Tweetsdistilled, all of the rest of the Top 10 are related to Twitter itself. The most popular being Andrew Fitzgerald (@magicandrew), the head of Twitter's Moments team.
Tweetsdistilled is even more popular with our gang of 23 than CEO Jack Dorsey himself!
Tweetsdistilled rubs shoulders with Twitter ViPs
There are 74 accounts that are followed by more than half (12 or more) of the 23 accounts.
The full list is here.
Of these 62 are Twitter related.
The 12 accounts that aren’t are: @HillaryClinton, @BillClinton, @POTUS, @Snowden, @BBCBreaking, @WhiteHouse, @buzzfeed, @BreakingNews, @NYTimes, @BarackObama, @Guardian and of course @Tweetsdistilled.
Tumblr media
Now there’s a cool list to be part of!
In fact our group of followers is nearly twice as likely to follow Tweetsdistilled than the current, former and potentially next Democratic Presidents of the United States.
Start following
All of which suggests that Tweetsdistilled must have a pretty good recipe for curating Twitter. So why not start following today to find out what you're missing.

Top 49 words in successful LinkedIn post titles
Why, How or What appear in nearly one third of successful posts
Tumblr media
The word cloud above is based on the relative frequency of terms appearing in the 1,196 LinkedIn posts tracked by Lissted in the last 6 months* that achieved 2,000 or more LinkedIn shares. None of the posts were by LinkedIn Influencers (more about them in another post).
From the table below we can see that one of “Why”, “How” or “What” appears in nearly a third of the posts**.
Tumblr media
The top posts with each of these terms
Why I turned down $500K, Pissed off my investors, and Shut down my startup (10,763 shares)
How I Landed my Dream Job in Two Weeks: My Top 5 Linkedin Tips! (7,792 shares)
What's the largest number you can represent with 3 digits? Nope. It's not 999. (21,372 shares)
But perhaps these terms only appear in a lot of highly shared posts because they’re used so often?
The popularity of the top terms could just reflect the fact that they are used often in posts generally.
The following table compares the frequency of the top 5 terms in the successful posts to the frequency of the same terms in the remainder of the LinkedIn posts tracked by Lissted (55,198) that got less than 2,000 shares.
Tumblr media
We can see that “you” actually appears more often in the other posts suggesting its presence is not beneficial.
But the other four all appear less in the other posts. In fact “why” appears 2.3 times more in the top posts than in the wider population.
A prediction
So for example, given the UK’s next Prime Minister is (at the time of writing) looking like being Theresa May, what about a topical post based on the analysis?
A LinkedIn post that asked:
“Why (2.3 times more popular) women (4.5 times) make (1.4 times) the best (4.5 times) CEOs (3.5 times)?”
should in theory do very well.
Interestingly, at the moment there's only one piece of content indexed by Google that matches that title.
Anyone better qualified than me want to have a crack at writing a post on this topic to see how it performs?
Notes
*  To appear in Lissted’s data the posts had to be shared by at least one influential Twitter user tracked by us.
** “a, an, and, are, at, for, from, in, it, of, that, the, to” have all been removed.

Who’s influential in Boulder, Colorado? Startup King of the Mountains
Tumblr media
Boulder, Colorado. Population 97,385 (294,567 Metro area).
For non tech people in the UK we’d think Boulder, Colorado might be best known as the setting for the much loved Robin Williams’ sitcom Mork and Mindy.
Tumblr media
For the Tech community it’s probably better known as where Techstars, the startup accelerator, was founded.
It’s also home to GNIP, Twitter’s data arm, who provide Lissted with the raw material on which a lot of our analysis is based.
With this in mind we thought we’d see who Lissted ranks as influential in the Boulder community.
What we looked at
The focus of this analysis is who's influential in relation to other Boulder residents. What you might call their local community influence.
This means that some Boulder residents who have wider state, US and/or global influence may not feature because they aren't as well connected in the local community as the 100 accounts in our list. Examples include @BadAstronomer (5th global Astronomy, 11th in global physics) and @BrianClark (58th US SEO&SEM, 60th US Digital Marketing).
A full list of the Top 100 Boulder influencers is at the bottom of the post and you can find a Twitter list here.
We've also included a list of the top 40 Boulder residents based on Twitter wide influence for good measure too.
Daily Camera and Brad Feld top the list
30 people and 70 organisations feature in the Top 100.
Top ranked organisation:
Tumblr media
Daily Camera (1st), Boulder’s local newspaper. To give an idea of its significance to the Boulder community, the account is followed by 44 of the other 49 influencers in the Top 50.
Top ranked person:
Tumblr media
Brad Feld (3rd), co-founder of the Boulder based venture capital firm the Foundry Group, and co-founder of Techstars.
Startups, VCs and Journalists are key
Tumblr media
More than half of the 30 people in the top 100 (16) are either VCs or relate to the startup community in some way.
Of the remaining fourteen, five are journalists, three are politicians (or involved in local politics), three relate to creative/marketing, leaving one each for art, business and media.
Techstars rocks Boulder
Top 10 People
Five of the top 10 people in the list relate to Techstars, and one other is a Techstars volunteer.
As well as Brad Feld, the other person ranked in the top 10 at 6th is Andrew Hyde, Startup Week Director at Techstars.
The rest of the top 10 people in the list are:
Mitchell Byars (15th) – Reporter at The Daily Camera. David Cohen (16th) – Founder and Managing Partner at Techstars Jared Polis (17th) – Congressman for Colorado’s 2nd district (includes Boulder) Nicole Glaros (18th) – Chief Product Officer, Techstars Ef Rodriguez (21st) – Director of Global Social, HTC. Ex Ignite Boulder, Techstars volunteer & Colorado University (Boulder) Alumnus Ari Newman (24th) – Partner at Techstars Seth Levine (26th) – Managing Director, Foundry Group Elaine Ellis Reddy (27th) – ex Marketing Manager, GNIP.
Businesses and local media are strong voices
Tumblr media
Startup and VC organisations are also prevalent in the Top 100. There are eight included, with three occupying Top 10 positions – Techstars (4th), Boulder Startup Week (7th) and Ignite Boulder (8th).
But this isn’t the biggest group. Local business related accounts for 22 members of the Top 100, with local media following close behind with 17 accounts in the Top 100.
Other top organisation accounts that feature in the Top 10 are the City of Boulder (2nd) and the University of Colorado (Boulder) (10th).

Basis of analysis
To calculate the Boulder community rankings the Lissted platform selected a sample of 2,812 Twitter accounts that it rates as the most significant relating to “Boulder CO” OR “Boulder Colorado”. It then applied our proprietary algorithms to over 1.9 million following/follower relationships in connection with these accounts, as well as thousands of retweets, replies and mentions between them over the last 90 days.
The wider Twitter ranking list was calculated based on analysing 1 billion+ relationships relating to over 1.3 million accounts ranked as most influential by Lissted and millions of retweets, replies and mentions over the last 90 days.

Top 100 PR Measurement Influencers
The International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC) is holding its annual summit this week in London.
To celebrate we thought we’d put the Lissted platform to work using its Twitter data and proprietary algorithms to try and figure out who’s influential in the PR Measurement community.
The full Top 100 list (including scores and methodology) *now extended to 150* is at the bottom of the post and a Twitter list of the Top 100 is here.
Follow #AMECSummit tweets filtered by this list here.
AMEC and Richard Bagnall lead the way
Tumblr media
Perhaps unsurprisingly the No.1 ranked influencer and top organisation is AMEC itself.
Tumblr media
The top ranked person at No.2 on the list is Richard Bagnall, CEO of Prime Research UK and AMEC board member.
Richard is a leading figure behind AMEC’s new interactive integrated measurement framework which will be launched tomorrow (Thurs 16th June) at 16.30 - you can watch the announcement via Periscope here.
PR Measurement community is all about the people
Tumblr media
Two thirds (67) of the Top 100 influencers are people. They work in a range of roles that reflect the many interested parties in the measurement conversation. Thirteen of these people are speaking at this week’s AMEC summit.
33 Organisational influencers make up the remainder of the Top 100. Media intelligence vendors and consultancies (11) are the single biggest group. Followed by industry bodies (9), media outlets (7) and PR/Social Media consultancies (3).

Basis of analysis
To calculate the rankings the Lissted platform selected a sample of Twitter accounts that it rates as potentially significant relating to PR Measurement terms e.g. “measurepr”, “pr measurement”, “media evaluation”, “social media measurement”. It then applied our proprietary algorithms to over 90,000 following/follower relationships in connection with these accounts, as well as thousands of retweets, replies and mentions by them over the last 90 days.
Notes on scores
Community Score is a measure of the account’s level of potential influence in the particular community based on the follower relationships and interactions they have with others in that community.
Insider Score is a prediction of whether the account may also have influence in other communities. The higher the score the more the person’s influence appears to be concentrated in the specific community being analysed.
Example:
An account like @PRWeekUS has a fairly high Community score - 83 - because a significant proportion of the PR Measurement community follow and interact with it.
However @PRWeekUS’s Insider score is a lot lower at 47 because its influence isn’t restricted to the PR Measurement community, but extends far beyond this.
Contrast with @BarryLeggetter whose Insider score of 100 implies that Barry's influence is likely to be concentrated in the PR Measurement community itself.
NB - Both scores are logarithmic so 100 to 90 is quite a jump, 90 - 80 a even bigger one, 80 - 70 even bigger and so on.

Remain campaign encouraged Voter registration more than Leave?
Lissted’s analysis suggests that influential members of the Remain community on Twitter were nearly 3 times MORE likely to tweet a link to the UK ‘Register to Vote” website than influential members of the Leave community.
In the last few days there’s been a great deal of chatter on Twitter encouraging people to register to vote, so they can participate in the EU referendum.
Lissted has tracked nearly three thousands tweets by influential Twitter users that include a link to the UK Government’s ‘Register to Vote” page. Including retweets these tweets account for nearly 107,000 tweets in total.
Top by retweets is this one from Emily Watson
Tweeters Don’t lose your vote!Register to vote before midnight tomorrow https://t.co/dHve67g86t #EUref #ReadyToVote pic.twitter.com/nuzYbRQ032
— Emma Watson (@EmWatson)
June 6, 2016
The rest of the top ten based on retweets look like this:
http://twitter.com/ElectoralCommUK/status/739738111173763073 http://twitter.com/jonsnowC4/status/740049358817742848 http://twitter.com/weareeuropeuk/status/735009968655585282 http://twitter.com/charltonbrooker/status/590051867645870080 http://twitter.com/sarahwollaston/status/739034631262113792 http://twitter.com/Aiannucci/status/739482891038642176 http://twitter.com/caitlinmoran/status/739822114149171201 http://twitter.com/faisalislam/status/739562634509463553 http://twitter.com/UKLabour/status/739723518741336064
We wondered though.
Given that the vast majority of late registrations are coming from the young.
Tumblr media
And given that the young are less likely to be Eurosceptic.
Tumblr media
Could we see evidence that the Remain campaign has been encouraging registration more than Leave?
Has one campaign been encouraging voter registration more than the other?
To gather evidence of this we used Lissted to build two communities. One for Remain and one for Leave. Details of how we built the communities are below.
We then removed from both resulting lists any accounts that appeared in both. A lot of well known politicians and journalists on both sides of the argument are followed and interacted with by both communities.
We then looked at how many times each community had shared the Register to Vote link and by what proportion of the members.
Tumblr media
Remain influencers much MORE likely to share Register to Vote link in last 7 days
- 60 per cent more Remain members tweeted the link than Leave members (230 v 144)
- The proportion of the Remain community tweeting the link (40.4 per cent) was 2.8 times higher than in the Leave community (14.3 per cent)
- The proportion of the Remain community tweets including the link (3.4 per cent) was 12.5 times higher than in the Leave community (0.3 per cent, actually 0.27 per cent rounded up!)
Conclusion
So, it would indeed appear that members of the Remain campaign have been A LOT more keen to promote voter registration in the run up to today’s cutoff.
Whether it will make a difference to the result on 23rd June, we will have to wait and see.
Notes on communities
The communities were based on using Lissted’s proprietary algorithms to analyse the Twitter relationships and interactions of thousands of accounts that identified themselves as strongly related to one or other of the campaigns.
In the case of Leave we were looking for accounts with terms such as “voteleave”, “vote_leave”, “vote leave”, “leave eu” or “leaveeu” in their bios. We also included accounts relating to UKIP that didn’t mention these terms given the party’s very strong support for the Leave campaign.
For Remain it was terms “voteremain”, “remain” and “strongerin”.
To qualify for inclusion in a community the strength of the relationships and interactions analysed for an account needed to pass a given level. This was to ensure that an account was both likely to be affiliated with a particular campaign and also that the account was influential within that community.
The resulting Remain community had 913 members and the Leave community had 2,394 members. This difference reflects the significant UKIP community on Twitter.

Who influences Moz? A community analysis
“A leading light”
For anyone who doesn't know Moz is a leading light in the world of online marketing tools.
The company is also excellent at practicing what they preach.
Lissted ranks @Moz as a top 10 influencer in a number of relevant communities. These include SEO, Digital Marketing and Inbound Marketing in both the US and UK. Its founder Rand Fishkin, and Marketing scientist Dr Pete Meyers, also rank high in these areas.
Tumblr media
So, Moz and its team are influential in the digital marketing space.
But who might influence Moz people?
To find out we used Lissted to build two communities based on two different starting points.
Moz Internal List
Built using 100+ top accounts relating to Moz staff, company accounts, alumni and associates.
Moz External List
Built using the 3,000+ accounts followed by @Moz on Twitter.
In each case Lissted used its proprietary algorithms to analyse who these accounts follow and interact with, in order to predict who is likely to be influential within these communities.
What did we find?
Moz people influence Moz people
Tumblr media
The top 5 influencers in the Moz Internal List are all Moz related (position in brackets):
- Moz (1)
- Rand Fishkin (2) Founder
- Dr Pete Meyers (3) Marketing scientist
- Jennifer Sable  (4) Director of Audience Development
- Sarah Bird (5) CEO
In the top 20 there are also a further three Moz employees:
- Erica McGillivray (6) Community Manager
- Matthew Brown (8) Chief of Product Strategy and Design
- Matt Roney (20) Community Manager
Not a huge surprise perhaps, but it demonstrates what a tight knit community Moz staff are on Twitter.
What about the top people from outside Moz?
Alumni, Associates and personal connections figure highly too
The rest of the Top 20 consists of:
Alumni and personal ties
- Cyrus Shepard (7) Founder of Fazillion
- Geraldine, the EveryWhereist (10) Travel blogger extraordinaire (& Rand Fishkin's wife)
- Ruth Burr Reedy (11) Director of Strategy, Up Build
- David Mihm (17) CEO David Mihm Inc
Moz Associates
- Mike King (12) Founder of iPullRank
- Will Critchlow (14) CEO of Distilled
- Gianluca Fiorelli (15) Consultant
- Aleyda Solis (16) Consultant
Other industry influencers
- Ian Lurie (9) CEO of Portent
- Wil Reynolds (13) Founder of SeerInteractive
By coincidence (?) both of these companies appear at the top of Moz’s (supposedly) unranked list of recommended SEO consultancies.
- Annie Cushing (18) Founder of Annielytics.
Moz are on record as being big fans including using her site audit checklists.
- Danny Sullivan (19) Founding Editor of Search Engine Land and Marketing Land.
Influencers in the wider SEO community
When we look at the Moz External List based on who the @Moz Twitter account follows the picture is similar. 13 of the Internal List Top 20 appear:
Rand Fishkin, Moz, Dr Pete Meyers, Mike King, Ian Lurie, Annie Cushing, Wil Reynolds, Will Critchlow, Aleyda Solis, David Mihm, Cyrus Shepard, Jennifer Sable Lopez, Danny Sullivan.
But there are some significant differences.
Danny Sullivan appears at No.3 compared to 20th in the Moz internal list. Jennifer Sable Lopez appears at No.20 compared to No.4. This reversal demonstrates Danny’s greater significance in the wider SEO community, compared to Jennifer’s within Moz.
The 7 different members of the Top 20 are:
Barry Schwartz, CEO Rusty Brick, ranked 5th versus 36th in the Moz internal list
Bill Slawski, Director of Search for Go Fish Digital (6th v 22nd)
Search Engine Land (7th v 48th)
Matt Cutts, Head of Google’s Webspam team (10th v 62nd)
Larry Kim, Founder of Wordstream (12th v 83rd)
Lee Odden, CEO TopRank Marketing (13th v 177th)
John Doherty, Founder of Get Credo (16th v 21st)
The difference in their rankings in the two lists implies that Search Engine Land, Matt Cutts, Larry Kim and Lee Odden have more significance in the wider SEO and digital marketing communities than they do within the Moz community.
Conclusion
Moz’s leadership position within the wider SEO and digital marketing communities is clear. It also has strong relationships with an eco system of alumni, associates and industry insiders. The analysis suggests that it is this group that is most likely to be an outside influence on the Moz community rather than the more widely followed “celebrities” within these communities.
Rand, if you’re reading this we’d love to get your view!
