FOLKS. This full project took me a total of 79 hours and 4 minutes.

i zoned out about mid July and made seven of these, i have never been this motivated before. it was actually a comfort to have an idea and have the energy and ability to carry through.

so. concept. i have recently become interested in folklore and the cultural sociology of why we tell stories (incredibly simplified way of saying that but whatever) and one part of that is the idea of monsters and why do we make them. what exactly defines a monster, where do they come from.

And the entire time i was watching Dungeon Meshi, I could not stop thinking about it. What makes these creatures monsters, what separates them from the livestock and wild animals. Dungeon Meshi operates on a Dungeons and Dragons view of monsters, for obvious reasons, which is that these creatures are monsters because we’ve decided they are. Which is a very simple view and I love to over complicate everything.

So this whole project is making reference to an essay titled “Monster Culture (Seven Theses)” by Jeffery Jerome Cohen and you should know that i have taken enormous creative liberties in referencing the points made. This one is probably the most accurate to the point.

(All honestly, I’m kinda scared to post these. I worked so hard on them and I want people to like them so bad.)
