And what do we come to find out? Harry pulled down his pants somewhere in Brazil and let a stranger tattoo the word “Brasil” dangerously high on his thigh. But lets not forget the enthusiasm of it all with the extra exclamation point at the end !

Then, rumor has it, Harry wasn’t done yet. He drags his fun loving pal Niall into it all and hits up a rooftop pool party until three in the morning. But of course lets not forget the caipirinhas…

Closeting/Bearding & Coming Out In The Entertainment Industry

(Note: I originally wrote this post in August of 2020. I significantly revised it, so I’m reposting it versus reblogging it from my old blog.)

This write-up is about entertainment industry workers in general. You can easily deduce from the post what facets would hugely impact Harry and Louis. However, this is covering the industry as a whole, so simply take the facts as you will.

The three main points I am going to address are:

How contracts can legally prevent entertainers from coming out.

The entertainment industry actively ‘encourages’ closeting/PR relationships in modern times.

Why closeted celebrities often do not come out or admit to bearding/PR relationships post-contract or post-career.

At some points, I will use A/N to denote my opinion. The rest of this is fact-based and interview-based information. I hope you find this insightful!

Fact #1: Contracts Can Legally Require Closeting In The US and UK

A. Morality clauses can be seen in talent or endorsement agreements and they give the employer the right to terminate the agreement if the employee acts in such a way that it reflects negatively on the employer or otherwise reduces the benefit of the agreement to the employer.

B. While employers may not be able to wield such control over full-time employees, movie studios are considered independent contractors, and they could argue that portraying a hetero image is crucial to a successful business transaction.

C. Someone is probably self-employed and doesn’t have the rights of an employee if they’re exempt from PAYE and most of the following are also true:

they put in bids or give quotes to get work

they’re not under direct supervision when working

they submit invoices for the work they’ve done

they’re responsible for paying their own National Insurance and tax

they don’t get holiday or sick pay when they’re not working

they operate under a contract (sometimes known as a ‘contract for services’ or ‘consultancy agreement’) that uses terms like ‘self-employed’, ‘consultant’ or an ‘independent contractor’

(A/N: From what I have gathered, the term ‘independent contractor’ is also used in the United Kingdom. I work as an independent contractor and have for almost 10 years. This means that I:

Can legally be denied the protections that regular employees have.

Frequently sign contracts and NDAs in order to obtain work.

These documents can and do contain stipulations that would not be legal in traditional employee/employer situations.

Indefinite NDAs are fairly common in my experience; this will be touched in in section four.

D. “But celebrities end up in fake relationships (if it indeed is a fake relationship) all the time, for many reasons. Usually, it’s just good old-fashioned, dead-eyed cynical ambition.

Then there are bearding PROmances where one or more celebrity in the pairing is concealing their sexuality in order to maintain desirability within the industry and to the public.”

E. “A lot of people advise you not to do it. They tell you flat out —  ‘Don’t do it,’” said “Westworld” actress Evan Rachel Wood, who came out publicly as bisexual in 2011. “They don’t want you to be less desirable to men. Because that sells tickets and that helps your career.”

F. A top-level talent manager who spoke on condition of anonymity put it in blunter terms. “It’s all about perception. They want to believe that the lead guy is fucking the lead woman,” he said.

(A/N: Overall, the section above is to show that a contract is not always the reason that a celebrity stays closeted. Celebrities are often pressured, given ‘advice’, and/or are explicitly told not to come out.)

Fact #3: Celebrities Don’t Always Come Out After Contracts End

A. It wasn’t until years after the group announced their hiatus that he decided to come out to his loved ones and eventually share his story in People magazine in 2006.

B. “The older you get, you’re supposed to be dating people and it doesn’t happen, you have more excuses you have to figure out. It just becomes a lie on top of a lie with your best friends, and it’s a horrible situation to be in,” he said. “After I did come out, I lost a lot of friends because they couldn’t get over how I could lie to them for that long.”

C. “Because of the advice that was given to me to stay in the closet,” he added, “I became very disconnected from who I was, and there’s a lot of residual [stuff] that to this day I still deal with where I find myself [thinking] ‘oh, I sound too gay’ or ‘I’m acting too gay’ because it was so drilled into my brain.”

D. But does bearding in Hollywood continue in this decade? Yes, although the participants are unlikely to admit it until years later at best.

The drivers behind an individual choosing to beard (avoiding public scrutiny that would result in blackballing/loss of income, fear of rejection by family and friends, etc.) remain.

(A/N: Lance Bass was in the closet for six years while in NSYNC and the band broke up in 2002. He didn’t come out until 2006.)

Fact #4: Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) Can Be Enforced After Other Contracts/Obligations End

The information here applies to both celebrities, beards, and other involved parties. Involved parties can include:

Family members.

Personal assistants.

Stylists.

Tattoo artists.

Former romantic partners.

Friends.

Photographers.

A. Another very important consideration for non-disclosure agreements is the time period for which it is meant to be enforceable.

There are generally two kinds of time periods for these agreements: perpetual or with a stated time limit.

A perpetual non-disclosure agreement never expires whilst a non-disclosure agreement with a stated time limitation ceases to be active past the time period.

B. “There’s no boilerplate timeframe for how long a non-disclosure can or should last and the specific timeframe will depend entirely upon the details of the agreement, the preferences of the parties involves, the relationship between the parties, and a number of other factors.”

Final Thoughts

Drawing conclusions from these facts is pretty straightforward. In my opinion, we can see that:

Closeting and bearding are very real obstacles in the entertainment industry.

‘It’s 2020/2021, this doesn’t happen anymore’ is simply not a valid argument regarding the topic.

‘If the contract is over, they’d come out by now’ is also not a valid argument. Aside from legalities, the immense pressure of being called a liar - and all of one’s friends and friends being labeled liars by proxy - seems impossibly difficult.

Facts and personal experiences from LGBTQ celebrities should not be ignored. Maybe you don’t agree with a ship, or maybe you don’t think a celebrity is gay/closeted. That’s fine - you still cannot discount the truth presented as it stands.

I’m open to opinions and thoughts about this (and anything else I post). Please keep things civil and kind; that’s all I ask if your opinion differs from mine.

Would you mind explaining how that play out or your thoughts in it?

Hi there anon, I’m sorry your ask was sitting on my inbox for a few days but I really wanted to give a proper answer so I took my time. Yeah, there’s two things larries probably avoid more than anything: Haylor new years eve and the confirmation on GMA. Considering your questions I think there’s two major things to be analyzed in this interview: everyone’s body language and reactions. Keeping that in mind, I don’t think they were caught-off guard at all, all of them seem somewhat uncomfortable since the very beginning of the interview. We have: 1) an extremely pissed off Harry. And that extends also the next part of this interview later on, here. He looks like he wants to cut a bitch right there and then the entire time. 2) Liam on daddy direction mode. Tense, but he would probably confirm the baby himself if someone asked him to. 3) “buzzing” Louis. Living an out-of-body experience and just waiting for someone to call it a joke. 4) disgusted Niall. Niall is useless when there’s any kind of lying involved. He just froze there for like two whole minutes with the same disgusted look on his face.

Moments before the interviewer acknowledging the subject you can see Louis tensing up even further, like he as expecting it to come. He was very serious, moving his hands a lot on the mic and then drying on his pants. He totally knew it. 

Before we talk about Harry, I think there’s some other part of this interview that sounds completely off to me. You see, the male interviewer congratulates Louis and then Louis brings the mic to his month, he smiles. That was his cue to talk, to say thank you, to confirm it. He doesn’t. 

He puts his mic down and it seems like the interviewer mimics something like “go on” and then adds “so how are you feeling”. And that’s when Louis finally answers how excited he is and proceeds talking like this is his own funeral speech. 

And when Louis finishes speaking is just the weirdest part, as you pointed out, anon. The female interviewer actually turns to Harry. Why? Did she really had the balls to do that? Was she rude enough to ask Harry about it? Honestly, I don’t think so. When the male interviewer congratulated Louis, we can even read his body language or choice of words as a bit strange or tense, but she looks completely delighted about it, she has a big smile for Louis. So unless this was a cold-hearted undercover larrie, I don’t think this interviewer had a fucking clue about what was happening there. Look at her:

And here’s the tricky part: there’s a moment of silence when Louis finishes talking and the male interviewer congratulates him again, and then both of the interviewers look at Harry at the same time.

So I can only read that as a) Harry said something or made some kind of noise that drew their attention to him or b) someone in their ears said “Harry has something to add”. Here’s the thing though, the camera was on the four of them moments before the interviewers turned to Harry. Harry haven’t moved or said anything, he was just standing there plotting how is he going to kill someone apparently. He shows no indication he wants to address the subject. Are you telling me his face made them look at him suddenly? Both interviewers actually motions for him to talk and then the woman says  “..Harry?” When he doesn’t talk, she adds “…you seem very quiet today” which he doesn’t, he just looks angry. He talked more than Niall and Louis. And of course he gives the most dry answer in history for that.

So here’s my opinion - and I’m really sorry this answer is so extremely long - I think Louis was totally trying to get away without saying a word. He literally played dead when the interviewer congratulated him, he was only smiling and nodding. When he pushed, Louis went with the most generic thing without saying the words pregnancy, baby, Briana. And with Harry, the more I replay that part of the video, more clear it is to me that he supposed to say something there and he just didn’t. “you seem very quiet today” like, really? While Liam is clearly panicking the entire time trying to save the situation because Harry and Louis didn’t feel like saying a word.

so he not so subtly draws attention to the trip to Amsterdam he took the month before with you know who (you know, the one where he left her alone and went to a gay bar and was also probably missing and thinking about his real partner)
