Choices Analysis: Lucio’s Route

After playing through Lucio’s route to exhaust all the free dialogue options, I want to try to break down the dialogue options that could potentially be the upright/reversed choices based on their significance in-game. Keep in mind this is early speculation and there’s usually only one or two UE/RE choices per book, but multiple dialogue options felt like they could fit the bill, so I wanted to discuss them anyway. With that said:

PREFACE

I want to start this off by indicating that I’m approaching this theory under the assumption that Lucio’s route will most likely be a redemption arc. I base this on the overall tone of the new route itself and how Lucio is being depicted as a love interest. If you don’t believe Lucio deserves to be redeemed, that’s fine, but for now this appears to be the way the developers are approaching his story. It is also worth bearing in mind that a potential redemption arc for Lucio doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to get off scot-free or that the other love interests will forgive him: It is possible, if not necessary, for any potential redemption arc about Lucio to centre around the fact he cannot possibly atone for all the hurt he’s caused or expect that the people he’s hurt should let him back into their lives. In other words, Lucio can grow as a person and still face consequences; these two concepts are not mutually exclusive.

Y’all need to appreciate Volta more

- She was the only courtier that was actually useful; she could tell what food was contamined with the plague and what was safe to eat. 

- She’s kinda the only one who didn’t really understand what was going on with the Devil, she was just hungry

- She was STARVING, eating her shoes and bones from graveyards, and the Devil promised her all the food in the world and of course she accepted…

- BUT the Devil also gave her an insatiable appetite. She has all the food in the world but she’s never satiated. She basically was being starved again

- Look at her wrists. They’re tiny af. She wears big clothes but like… she’s tiny

- She’s the only one willing to help MC and the investigation and she calls other courtiers out for talking sh!t about Nadia and lying to her about Lucio’s death. 

- Y’all saw her reaction while eating Mazelinka’s soup, right? The magical one that could make you feel instantly satiated? That was the first time in a LONG time she felt that way, imagine her surprise 

- Her demon form is also adorable lmao

- I’m so happy we get to free her in Nadia’s route

- I love her

Dissecting the Newspapers

What are those newspaper articles?

Well, I’m here to give MY interpretation of what is going on. Simply put, I think Anastasia is planning a coup to overthrow Vesuvia.

1) We have Anastasia fixing the canals

First off, Anastasia has no reason to fix the canals, she does not live in Vesuvia and her niece and nephew aren’t exactly permanent residence either. So why? These canal’s have been a long standing problem in Vesuvia’s history, no one knows who built them or why and half of them are unfinished so it’s safe to say they’ve probably been around since the city was founded. And then to have this mysterious benefactor who is putting in some very expensive resources to solve this issue? It’s to gain public approval for her and leave a positive impression on the masses (she did not actually speak publicly at the trial).

Her fixing the canals lead to her digging underground as well which seems to have resulted in the flooded district collapsing.

And speaking of public approval…

2) Nadia had to delay the masquerade

This threat of flooding is so serious Nadia delayed the masquerade. This should be a huge red flag as in all the other routes Nadia cannot cancel the masquerade. It’s obvious Nadia has a lot riding on the masquerade politically speaking. The people of Vesuvia love a good ole fashion masquerade and it’s pretty much the only reason anyone liked Lucio and did not start a revolution.

So we have a public figure who has been absent from the public eye for years who tries to offer two different events to improve her public standing. The hanging, which does not happen, and now the masquerade which is delayed. Even in the parts of the city where Lucio was always disliked and may have had their hopes riding on Nadia it just shows to them they are failing. Not to mention that now a foreigner is now fixing one of Vesuvia’s longest standing problems which obviously looks like it was always an easy fix but the Vesuvian royal family has been to incompetent to fix it. As well as now we have the flooded district being completely destroyed which is only going to hurt Nadia’s image more with the people.

In one fell swoop Tasya just ruined Nadia’s public image. Which if you want to plan a coup, it would be incredibly beneficial to have the current ruling figure fail.

3) Tasya has already won over the court

In the last book we got to see Tasya at work. Giving Valerius an incredibly expensive vineyard and Vastomil some rare worms isn’t exactly cheap. And while yes at face value this was just to convince them to rule Julian innocent I doubt it was just to rule Julian innocent on an even vote. They are indebted to her and have a great respect for her now as well.

And although she only has 2/5 members of the court it won’t be hard to win over the others.

4) a renowned expert in poison has been found mysteriously dead

Acontius Dogwood has been found dead, why would they include this seemingly irrelevant individual’s death for a teaser image? Well I’ll give you the biggest hint and it’s in the pudding.

If you don’t remember Nightshade allow me to remind you of this lovely quote from Julian

This poison is incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands but it’s only safe to be touched because it needs to be distilled. The distilling process for a poison can be pretty complicated and would need an expert to do so successfully. And an expert was just mysteriously killed (probably by his own creation). If he’s used to crafting this poison specifically for overthrowing kings he’s probably smart enough not to live in a city where its being used. 

Until what I believe is Anastasia asking for a poison to be crafted for her. I think she killed him to keep him quiet and no one to be the wiser. And where do I think this poison is? Well let’s take a look at the flower itself. 

A pale blue with darker veins inside of it…. Now lets take a look at that necklace that Anastasia gifted Portia real quick.

I think this necklace is a Chekhov’s Gun, its an incredibly odd thing to be drawing attention to as much as it has been, with even Valerius making a comment on it. More specifically I think it’s a reference to the Game of Throne’s necklace that Sansa wears at the purple wedding. It’s a pale blue necklace that has one of it’s dangling gems removed during the events as the gems hold a poison to overthrow a king… and subsequently frames her for murder.

Another point is how in the paid scene with Portia at the pillow fight it’s noted that had taken the necklace off. Now you could make an argument that this is simply because Portia didn’t want any damage to fall to the necklace but I think this was a way to make sure we the readers don’t accidentally break this gem containing an incredibly dangerous poison.

5) What is going on with the crabmen?

Ok, they aren’t actually half crab hybrids.

But what people are seeing at men in carapaces running around under ground. So I believe that they aren’t crabs, but rather men in armor. We know Anastasia is in charge of repairing the canals which has lead to her having to go underground. I think the fixing the canals is also a cover to get her to sneak armed troops underground which people are seeing. And they seem to be quite territorial and aggressive as it’s scaring the citizens… almost like they don’t want to be seen.

6) The storms

Ok, this wasn’t part of my original theory because I thought the storms were the Devil getting mad at delaying the masquerade but I saw @thesanguinerose​ ‘s post talking about how Julian and Portia’s parents were killed in a storm that mysteriously on the Devorak children and Tasya survived. 

And now that there are these violent storms brewing in Vesuvia… in the only route where Tasya is present raises some major concerns. Tasya explained to Portia that she had offered to buy their parent’s merchant ship to add to her fleet but they denied her. And then said parents happened to die out at see on a violent storm with Tasya present. It is definitely suspicious and I think these storms are connected to Tasya and are following her around. Perhaps in the same way that the plague followed Lucio around for having an uncompleted deal.

She does seem quite well traveled and despite being a baroness isn’t at her country ruling like she probably should. Probably to avoid destroying her city but there is no reason she can’t use this to an advantage. But I am making a lot of leaps with this one that I’m not even 100% about.

7) Foreshadowing in Portia’s Route

In Portia’s route there is a certain… theme to it. Portia is pretty bent on solving the mysteries of everything going on around her. Portia in general has a real penchant for snooping and keeping secrets. So we already know what one of the bigger mysteries of the overall story of The Arcana is “Why did Julian kill Lucio" but the problem is… Portia already solved it. She solved it before anyone else did back in book X (Yes Muriel’s route answers the question of if Julian did it at the start but not why) and yet we still have a massive story. 

There seems to be a theme in the secondary routes that they take a different approach to the world and story than the main three. Portia has been following the story pretty much beat by beat so far but there is something incredibly special about Portia. She has no connection to the Devil at all.

If you follow (I believe it’s @apprenticeofcups​ ‘s meta) the idea that Lucio is only as big as a threat in the route based on that character of that route you have an odd situation where… Portia doesn’t know Lucio at all. Portia has never even made a deal with a major arcana like all the other members of the route. Currently, Portia’s biggest obstacle and threat to her personal morals IS Anastasia. It’s not crazy to think that she’d become Portia’s biggest villain and a major villain in general.

Here is also some fun screencaps to show some foreshadowing about Portia’s route maybe holding something a bit bigger. She used to pretend she was a lost princess and says these words exactly:

Bridal carry is all fine and well, but he’s more a fan of fireman’s

Very low-key worried about you getting snatched up when he’s not looking, so he teaches you to fight

He’ll be the first to tell you - look out for the little guy on a battlefield

Trouble finding clothes? He has the best tailor in the city. (Do you know how hard it is finding jackets with one sleeve?)

Doesn’t bother with heels as often, especially when it’s just the two of you

Likes it when you wear them because he likes to watch you strut, but makes sure you know you don’t have to make yourself taller for anyone else’s sake 

(It’s not the most hypocritical thing he’s ever said)

Portia (5′1″/155 cm)

If you sit on her shoulders, you two can wear Muriel’s clothes

She is. the worst with the short jokes

She never gets to make them, and she cannot stop herself

Makes a big show of it when you ask her to reach something, even though she’s only a little bit taller

Once, you two got a pillow stuck in the rafters and had to bribe enlist Julian to get it down

She does have all kinds of tips and tricks to functioning at your size without getting her brother involved (step stools hidden all over Vesuvia)

Did you know half of those secret Palace rooms and passageways are too small for someone even Asra’s size to get to? 

You two find all kinds of goodies on your Under-5′5″ Secret Palace Adventures (room a previous Count used exclusively for having affairs - 1; shortcuts to the kitchens - 10; spiders - a shitload)

Muriel (6′10″/208 cm)

Boy, if he wasn’t hyperaware of his size before

You are (almost) two feet shorter than him

One foot is nothing. Most people are about a foot shorter than him. but two feet??

The average adult cat is 18-22″ long. You could put a whole large cat on your head and still be shorter than him

He’s actually very coordinated, and hardly ever bumps into anything, but he is mortified of bumping into you or running you over (because he would launch you)

Very aware of his stride length when you’re out on a walk together, especially in the woods

You usually fall asleep flat on his chest - he’s a little worried about squishing you in any other position, and the rhythm of his breathing lifts you up and down and rocks you to sleep

You’re used to being picked up, but holy shit it’s like you weigh nothing at all. People break more of a sweat carrying a bag of groceries than Muriel does porting you around

Nadia (5′10″/178 cm)

Will physically remove someone’s arm from their body your shoulder/head when they do that annoying short-person-armrest thing

Also worried about your safety and teaches you fencing, not fighting. (You’re not a berserker; you just need to protect yourself)

Custom-makes your outfits herself; she doesn’t trust Lucio’s tailor, and that way you can get frisky while she’s taking your measurements

Plays with and styles your hair a lot, since it’s right at her arm-level

Always seated in portraits of you together, so she isn’t towering over you

Consciously avoids diminutive nicknames (no “my little ___”); even if it doesn’t bother you, she thinks it’s tacky

Loves when you sit in her lap

It’s a great way to keep her from working too hard, because she can’t focus on anything else when you do. She’ll drop everything to shower you with kisses

Julian (6′4″/193 cm)

Jokes about putting a bell on you so he doesn’t lose you in crowds

Or maybe a really tall, brightly-colored hat

You’re best off as the little spoon, otherwise he splays out so much when he sleeps he’ll push you right out of bed

Likes resting his chin on your head and reading books together (he says poetry is his favorite, but he’s a sucker for harlequin romance)

So many forehead and top-of-the-head kisses

Like dancing? So many lifts

Also loves when you sit in his lap, especially while he’s telling a story

Occasionally he forgets and gets so into it he stands up

He caught you! but the crowd at the Rowdy Raven never lets him forget about the time he hip-checked his partner into a table

Asra (5′8″/173 cm)

He’s not used to being the tall one in the relationship, especially not by this margin

Gets more upset about short jokes than you do

“I know you’re used to it, but that doesn’t make it right”

Likes to be the big spoon, but if you’d rather be a jet pack, he’s down

He’s already anxious in crowds, but now he’s also worried about getting separated

You have to remind him frequently he can pick out your aura from a mile away

He’s not exactly the type to reorganize the whole shop, but he’ll make you a magical grabby-stick to get things down from high shelves

Faust is also happy to help; her strategy is wrapping around what you need and flinging herself off the shelf for you to catch. Cannonball!☕

Lucio in love headcanons

For the first while that you’re together, you aren’t really together. Of course everyone knows, it’s just not verbally confirmed. The first time it’s actually confirmed is at some extravagant party he’s thrown. Some foreign diplomat doesn’t know the nature of your relationship and flirts with you which of course, Lucio doesn’t stand for and he just comes over screaming about them flirting with his partner.

Lucio though he doesn’t always seem it, is very attentive to you. he remembers a lot of small details about you that you don’t always remember bringing up.

If you mentioned something you wanted, even in passing or jokingly, you may be surprise gifted with whatever that is.

That’s a big way he shows his love, he’s not too good at verbally expressing it. His compliments are often a bit awkward but it’s the thought that counts right? Eventually they do get better though.

Seriously, sometimes the things he says are so stupid that all you can do is look at him like ‘what the fuck’ and every time without fail, his face goes beet red.

You two share the bed with Mercedes and Melchior, even if you two didn’t want to, they whine at the door till they get to come into bed with you two.

You’ve waken up to him watching you sleep on numerous occasions, it’s almost always followed by a ‘you’re gorgeous/handsome when you sleep.’

He gives the best compliments when he’s just woken up and half asleep. Usually even more physically affectionate at those times too, hes practically glued to your side pressing his face into your neck and holding you close

He’s very physically affectionate in general, always has an arm wrapped around your waist, pressing kisses to your head etc. And he will absolutely melt if you return those gestures. Hes touch starved pls love this man.

You aren’t immune to his angry outbursts just because you’re together. It’s usually over petty things that resolve themselves but you’ve had some fights where one of you will end up sleeping in another room. 

Lucio’s apologies aren’t the best all the time and a lot of the time he doesn’t apologize and tries to brush it under the rug. But if he knows you’re genuinely upset he will make an effort to apologize to you.

He just really isn’t that great at verbally expressing how much he cares about you, but you can see how much he cares about you in the small things he does for you or the way he looks at you.

You really know that he cares about you because he is willing to put your before himself for many things.
