the  past  two  days  seemed  to  feel  like  a  lifetime.  it  was  weird  to  suddenly  be  so  alone  after  spending  practically  every  waking  moment  with  her  new  friends.  not  to  mention  lonely.  swann  knew  she  should  be  used  to  it—being  alone—but  she’d  allowed  herself  to  finally  make  some  friends  and  ever  since  kat…  well,  ever  since  the…incident—there  was  a  rift.  nora  in  LA,  autumn  ignoring  her  calls,  and  being  unable  to  even  try  to  talk  to  kat  for  corey  or  dylan  answering  the  phone  and  refusing  to  let  swann  speak  to  her.

          swann  was  restless;  lost…  her  own  home  was  suffocating  and  if  she  had  to  listen  to  her  mother’s  bickering  for  another  minute  she  was  pretty  sure  she’d  lose  her  mind.  her  mother  was  mad—rightfully  so—but  did  she  have  to  be  so  unfair ?  did  she  have  to  give  her  a  disapproving  look  every.  time.  they  locked  eyes ?  and  when  she  wasn’t  scrutinizing  her,  she  was  making  swann  pack  for  the  move.

          so,  she  had  to  get  out.

          at  first,  the  walking  seemed  aimless,  but  eventually  swann  took  notice  of  her  surroundings  and  realized  that  she  was  in  the  woods—her  and  her  friends'  secret  place—and  another  few  seconds  to  realize  that  she  wasn’t  alone  either.

          kat !

          she  hesitated  at  kat’s  initial  response  to  hearing  her  walking  up  behind  her,  but  once  their  eyes  met  and  tensions  defused,  swann  allowed  herself  to  sit  next  to  kat  with  a  small,  tentative  smile.

          “ uh,  hey,  kat… ”  she  spoke  up  after  a  moment,  doing  her  best  to  sound  as  least  awkward  as  she  could,  snorting  a  little  as  she  added,  “ i  don’t  think  i  could  even  try  to  be  like  dylan  or  corey  if  my  life  depended  on  it… ”

          a  few  beats  of  silence  passed  before  swann  spoke  up  again.  “ i  wasn’t  expecting  to  find  you  here…  i  tried  calling  you  but… ”corey.  the  asshole.  “ anyway—  it’s  good  to  see  you,  kat.  i,  um…  missed  you. ”

Why did bad shit always happen to her?

Ever since she’d gained the ability to walk, Kat had always been the kid with the scraped knee on the playground from running too fast for her short legs to carry her, gotten several splinters in her hands from climbing trees, or breaking bones for being too daring in her reckless deeds. Back then, it really seemed like the minimal stuff was out to get her.. now? Kat could confirm she knew what it meant to have life shit all over you with bad luck. Leukaemia. What a slap to the face, right? Kat thought she’d made peace with that diagnosis.. that she was ready to take on whatever it threw at her all while giving her family hell for acting so fucking irritating about it. But that was until a group of girls came into her life and for the first time in years, she’d gained three real friends who made her feel like she actually had something to live for. Once again; life laughing in her face.

Had she told her new friends about her illness? No. She didn’t need the pity, nor did she wish to talk about it.. not like she’d been left with much of a choice after Dylan had opened her big, bitchy mouth and spilled the beans for her. Another reason to hate her. Two days had passed since Bloom & Rage’s grand fiasco, radio silence from Nora, Autumn and Swann.. either that, or Kat had been too embarrassed to pick up the phone when it rang. It was easier to pretend they didn’t want to see her anymore than face up to what happened on that night.

Maybe distancing herself from them was the right thing to do, anyway. It wasn’t like she’d be around long enough to become ‘Best Friends Forever!’ as Nora had put it.

Eyebrows furrowing at the thought, baby blue’s remained pensively downcast to the water’s ripples below where her legs dangled over the small bridge above the lake. Her favourite place to come for some peace and quiet.. which she apparently wasn’t getting today, if the timid footsteps echoing behind her was anything to go off. Great. “Try to take me back home? I swear to god I’ll fuckin’ drown you.” With a bitter glare shot over her shoulder, it wasn’t until the familiar face of Swann Holloway came into view did Kat let her eyes soften. “..Swann?” Damn. So much for avoiding a conversation she definitely didn’t want to have. “Sorry, I thought you were Dylan.. Or even worse, Corey.” Shifting her gaze away to look anywhere but her, Kat hesitantly scooted over to allow her to sit if she wanted to.

She was good at pushing people away.. but never Swann.

          it  was  easier  being  friends  with  riley;  not  nearly  as  much  drama  as  she’d  had  with  juliet.  dana  felt  like  riley  was  someone  she  could  actually  trust  with  information  and  that  riley  didn’t  have  ulterior  motives  when  asking  about  the  happenings  and  goings  ons  in  dana’s  life.  rule  number  one:  don’t  be  friends  with  a  wannabe  journalist—especially  one  with  insecurity  and  anger  issues.

          riley  had  really  managed  to  cement  a  place  in  dana’s  heart  when  everything  had  gone  down  with  logan.  it  was  the  kind  of  secret  dana  had  been  scared  to  share  with  anyone,  but  riley  had  proved  to  be  the  best  friend  a  girl  could  ask  for  when  she  supported  dana  through  that  difficult  time,  free  of  judgment,  which  dana  appreciated.

          victoria  felt…hollow.  blindsided.  shaken.  all  reasonable  responses  to  finding  out  that  your  best  friend  shot  a  girl  in  cold  blood  and  the  teacher  you  admired  was  drugging  and  killing  teenage  girls.

          it  could’ve  been  her.  she  could’ve  been  next.  the  thought  played  on  her  mind  like  a  loop  as  she  coasted  through  the  rest  of  the  semester  at  blackwell.  truthfully,  winter  break  couldn’t  come  fast  enough.  the  sooner  she  could  put  some  distance  between  herself  and  this  place  the  better.

          but  just  because  she  would  definitely  need  therapy  after  this  didn’t  mean  that  she,  at  all,  felt  the  need  to  talk  to  max  caulfield.

“ i  don’t. ”  the  response  was  too  quick;  too  guarded—but  victoria  was  beyond  the  ability  to  train  her  face  or  emotions.  “ whatever  you  have  to  say,  max,  save  it. ”

brushing   dirt   or   ash   from   their   cheek   gently — Kat and Swann after the fire? 🥺

          with  masks  discarded,  the  girls  really  did  look  a  little  crazy—like  they  were  in  the  middle  of  playing  neighborhood  vigilante,  or,  in  this  case,  forest  vigilante.  either  way,  with  how  much  makeup  and  smoke  had  been  caked  into  her  skin,  swann  could  only  imagine  that  it  wouldn’t  take  much  more  than  a  phisoderm  scrub,  skip,  jump,  and  a  prayer  for  her  skin  not  to  break  out.

          surprisingly,  however,  the  touch  of  kat’s  delicate  fingers  on  her  cheek  decidedly  doesn’t  stress  her  out.  there’s  a  feeling  of  intimacy  with  it;  so  soft,  gentle,  and  swann  just  hopes  that  kat  doesn’t  have  the  misfortune  of  touching  any  of  the  bumpy  parts  of  her  skin,  much  less  feeling the  warmth  radiating  from  her  cheeks.
