Bygone visions of death.

This took me an awful amount of time to make, still I am not sure if I am fully satisfied with the results. Of course it is a piece of work that makes me proud for the amount of detail and effort I’ve put into it, but still, sometimes it gives me the notion that something is rather off and that I spend too much time on unnecessary details.

On the other hand, I really like the gloomy feel of it, and it made me realize how many times my mind had brought me to the feeling of pure death and terror because of my GAD. Visions that now seem bygone and hopefully for good, but that sometimes still linger through other feelings such as grief.

I think the amount of lines that I tried to put on this piece somewhat reflects how I deal with GAD, maybe because on the inside I didn’t even want to ever finish this, but keep working and working. Well, sometimes you have to accept it.

"Aujourd'hui" — full circle.

I painted this piece in November 2022 using oil pastels.

I had just quit my job as an architect and my only short-term plan was to rest. The pandemic was a difficult time for me, so I wanted to imagine a place I could turn to when things got tough. I wrote a song about my father—who passed away from Covid—and about the disconnection of adulthood and how friends can come and go just by mundane circumstances. So I guess both of those would represent a period of time where I just wanted to rest and hope for a better future, to reconnect my future with a past that was there and was there. Now after a few suggestions, I added another intervention on top of it that represents some of the things I was initially feeling inside while painting it. In retrospect sometimes I think anxiety does play a major role in my life for many, many reasons, and it inundantes even my hopes for a moment or two. Being able to represent different sides of the same piece makes it full circle, now.

It also makes me think of what I want of my newest (debut) EP as a music composer and artist. I really want to show people how was my personal journey during the pandemic, and I know many people felt lost during those years. Hopefully it can speak to my friends and family once it's out, in a sense.

In anyways, go get some rest.

"Aujourd'hui" — the story behind the lyrics.

Initially I was writing this song about my father — who passed away because of Covid in 2021 —, but it soon became a song about a certain disconnection that I felt in the adult life and that the pandemic also brought to us. While writing, I tried to bring up some memories I had not only with my father, but with my friends and family to try to understand this relationship. During the writing process I remember walking near the house of a childhood friend whom I had no longer seen since I was a teenager. He had lost his father when he was very young, and at that moment we used to chat a lot, trying to decipher the meaning of things around us with a certain innocence and adolescent pride. Many years later, I also lost my father, and I see that at the same time I reconnected with that past through memories, I figured time passes and understanding the details of life becomes increasingly difficult, not simpler. "Aujourd'hui" is a simple word and it means "Today" in French. It is a word I like since I started studying the language, both for its spelling and its sound. It stayed with me. I think it sums up a certain feeling I've had since my father was hospitalized with Covid. Receiving daily calls from my aunt with the news from the hospital was an extremely difficult and anxiety-driven time, living each day hoping for a better future and the recovery of a loved one. I think that sincee then I have had a certain difficulty foreseeing and planning future things. At the same time, I usually worry a lot about the future and regret past things, with no time for the present, even if I live one day at a time. I thought we would all overcome the problems caused by the pandemic with a better future. That future is today and it doesn't look brighter at all. I ended up learning to try to live and enjoy today, one day at a time, with people I love around me.

Eu pintei essa obra em Novembro de 2022. Eu tinha acabado de sair do meu emprego como arquiteto e meu único plano de curto prazo era descansar. A pandemia foi um momento difícil para mim, então eu queria imaginar um lugar onde pudesse recorrer quando as coisas estivessem difíceis. Escrevi uma música sobre meu pai — que faleceu de covid —, sobre a desconexão da vida adulta e como os amigos podem ir e vir apenas pelas circunstâncias da vida. Então acho que ambos representariam um período de tempo em que eu só queria descansar e esperar por um futuro melhor, para reconectar meu futuro com um passado que existia. Bem, de qualquer maneira. Descanse.
