Lizzo’s Downfall

Lizzo, the American rapper and song writer has recently been under fire for sexually harassing her dancers over their weight and creating a toxic working environment. This led to a lawsuit being filed against the singer.

This news came to a surprise for most of her fans and any who knew of her and her online presence as well. She had consistently made claims on twitter about body positivity and how the way a woman looks should not be their defining factor. She has gone online multiple times stating that her weight does not make her unfit and that every person should be treated with respect.

This is the same individual that is now being sued for creating a harsh and toxic working environment and pressuring her dancers in a strip club. The identity that she had portrayed online does not align with the image her ex-dancers are painting and this is causing many of her fans to lose trust in the words that she has advocated.

In the lawsuit, it is claimed that Lizzo would discriminate against the dancers�� religious endeavors and racial backgrounds. She would further deride those who had premarital sex while sharing her own fantasies. These conversations were recorded and shown to lawyers as each of these factors goes entirely against the brand image she has created for herself.

The internet was quick to point out the difference in how she speaks for herself stating that her weight should not be highlighted and that all women should be respected, while she is severely causing mental duress to the dancers under her employment. She has not made a statement online since this became public for any and all to criticize her on. She has not been online to view what many has to say on her actions, thus not feeling the pressure of the hammer of cancel culture.

Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg “Pewdiepie” Constant back and forth with being cancelled.

Felix had made a name for himself on the internet through his online gaming videos under the YouTube Channel “PewDiePie”. In the start of his career on YouTube in the early 2010’s, did not run into much controversy online as the ideology of cancel culture had not taken its full shape yet.

However, Felix faced his first major controversy took place in 2017 after he had pulled a stunt where he commissioned individuals abroad to hold a sign that held antisemitic remarks. He had phased the delivery of this in a video as a prank and a joke, which did not land well with the public for very clear reasons. This led to the cancellation of his YouTube Red show called “Scare PewDiePie”.

After he had addressed his actions, he had slowly regained his reputation, and many had moved past his actions. Stating that people would make mistakes regardless of how hideous they might be, and the key factor should be that they grow and learn from their actions.

This, however, was not the last time he had caused the internet to target him for in the respects of cancel culture.

Later on in the same year, around mid-September while he was playing a third person shooter known as “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” on a live stream, he had cussed out another online player and referred to them by the “N word”.

This was the instance where those who had previously ignored his “pranks” could no longer ignore his racist undertones that were played off as jokes. This led to the internet entirely shunning him and his actions as they were deemed unacceptable. As this instance took place during a livestream, he had no way to edit and senor himself. Which meant that part of the livestream was recorded and reposted for any and all to see.

Although he was cancelled, after taking a hiatus from YouTube, he was able to completely reintegrate himself into the YouTube community without extreme pushback. Allowing him to make a come back and slowly rebuild the love and care that his fans had for him.

He was able to go through cancel culture and still preserve by simply being patient till the storm blew over to make a reappearance. I’ll take your money, you can ban me, but I’ve done this before, and it doesn’t feel good.”

As the scandals surrounding The 1975 surfaced, social media channels became a battlefield for both fans and detractors. Hashtags denouncing the band became popular, and requests to cancel the band got louder and louder. Jonah Hill Twisted Use of Therapy Talk

Jonah Hill known for his roles in comedy films has recently been exposed to be a controlling boyfriend to his girlfriend Sarah Brady. Sarah Brady is a known surfer, who has been in a relationship with Jonah for a few years and recently had shared on Instagram that he is manipulative and controlling by asking her to not interact with her surfing friends if they are men. This makes it difficult for her as she has known her surfing friends since they were kids.

Jonah Hill is seen using therapy talk to try and make himself sound significantly calm and collected, that he is simply setting boundaries for what he expects his partners to do and behave as while they are in a relationship. Through the screenshots it is implied that this conversation had taken place before and Sarah was unable to meet his demands in her general conduct in her day-to-day life.

The screenshots were met with backlash on twitter as people had deemed his demands manipulative and controlling, stating if one’s boyfriends start texting similar patterns that the girls should start planning for an escape route. However, this was not the only stance. On the other side of the argument, people were claiming that all Jonah was doing was stating what he expected of his partners in their relationship. That he was being respectful and calm, and that Sarah should have been able to follow his requests if she had respected him as her boyfriend.

While this argument may ring true that Jonah Hill was being respectful, it completely negates the emotional aspect of one cutting out their entire support system if their partner had asked for such request. This would mean that Sarah loses her entire support system and finds herself only in the company of her boyfriend.

This situation had led to many considering Jonah Hill a manipulative person for using therapy talk to find a way to ensure that he gets what he wants in his relationships without considering how his partner would feel by the requests he makes. Which then paints Jonah Hill in a terrible light.

Dream deems the mask back on

The internet star Clay who goes by the name of “Dream” has stated that he will be putting the mask back on.

Dream is known for his viral videos and controversy on YouTube around the video game “Minecraft”. He had started his online career as a faceless content creator when making appearances on his peers’ channels. This meant their shared fans could only see a mask when he had decided to shoot in-person content.

In October 2022, Dream decided that it was time for the world to see who he is, he had posted a face reveal. This video was marketed and blasted around every popular corner of Western online media. He had gotten other famous creators to his face reveal through FaceTime before the release of his YouTube video, creators such as Addison Rae, Anthony Padilla, and Bella Poach as well as many more.

However, Dream was strapped in for one of the worst possible rides of his lifetime. Once the video had gone public, the masses were utterly cruel to him for his appearance. Stating he looks like Rumpelstiltskin from the Shrek franchise. Twitter had users ranting about the fact that Dream had put such an emphasis on how he looked that many were let down.

After months of being berated on the internet for how he looks, as well as any action that he did that the public deemed was unsavory being put under a microscope, the hate had got to him. On 9th June 2023, Dream stated that the mask is going back on and he will continue to wear it in public spaces until he feels as if he has worked on his looks to his satisfaction.

The users on the internet had affected him to the point where Dream felt as if he had to hide his face completely from the eyes of the public, the negative reaction to all most every aspect of his life due to people hating on his appearance. This very public reaction by the masses also sets an example to other faceless creators that essentially means :

“If you're not hot, don’t show us”

With more and more people becoming comfortable being cruel on the internet behind a screen, the more superficial the criticism becomes. We as users choose the wrong things to highlight when we take up in arms with pitchforks and torches.

The Jocelyn Chia MH370 Jokes Controversy

Let’s face it: comedy has always had two sides to it. After making jokes about the sad MH370 tragedy, the Singaporean and New York based comedian, Jocelyn Chia, found herself in the center of the controversy. Personally, I think comedy should help us reconsider our beliefs and the status quo. Where do we draw the line between pushing limits and creating needless suffering, though?

Ahh, cancel culture, the internet age's quick judge, juror, and executioner. With demands for Chia's cancellation rippling across social media channels, the fury over Chia's jokes spread like wildfire. While it's vital to hold people accountable, I can't help but worry whether the culture of cancel has grown a little too trigger-happy. Instead than dismissing someone outright, shouldn't we give them the chance for development, education, and redemption?

Enter the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), stage left, claiming that they’ll ask the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to locate Chia, who is based in the US... Some contend that the PDRM's involvement is required to uphold order and safeguard sensibilities. But I can't help but wonder if monitoring speech goes too far and stifles freedom of speech. Where is the fine line between respecting societal norms and defending individual rights?

Let's take a step back and encourage productive dialogues rather than abruptly cancelling people. Open debate frequently results in personal development and learning. Understanding the influence of comedy, the delicate nature of tragic occurrences, and the obligations of comedians in traversing these challenging terrains are crucial. We must not lose sight of the fact that humour has often served as a catalyst for social change by encouraging us to challenge established mores and increase empathy. Everyone has time and space to grow, don’t you agree?

While it is difficult to find a middle ground amidst the confusion. We must recognize the complexity of the situation, pay heed to the feelings of those who are impacted, and protect the freedom to express oneself humorously. It involves walking a fine line between being sensitive and having the flexibility to explore difficult topics. Ezra Miller at the Flash Movie Premier

Ezra Miller despite being a known actor for their work in the Fantastic Beasts franchise and his role as the Flash, they have caused a stir with their past actions. Ezra had been seen physically attacking a fan in a bar in Iceland, accused of grooming an 18-year-old activist and rumored to lead a cult.

With these cards under their belt, the public eye has formed an opinion of him that is unflattering, with many holding a disguised view of his action and a lack of empathy for what they have done. The public had assumed that the Warner Brothers DC Universe would remove him from the Flash series due to his recent actions; however, to the surprise of many, the new Flash movie still starred the actor.

With Millers' recent appearance at the Flash premier, we are left to wonder if the Warner Brothers care for his past actions in any regard. Would he face no natural consequence for his actions in his career? In a current world that is obsessed with the idea of cancel culture, is Ezra Miller able to get away with his ill-intended actions?

Cancel culture focuses on many aspects when it comes to crowds tearing down individuals and corporations, the main factor being “Are they in the wrong?”

Usually, one can argue “Oh the internet kids are at it again, going after someone for something irrelevant” or “All they do is hate on others, what good are they doing to be saying all this?”

To say that about Ezra Miller? Highly difficult. Almost downright impossible.

His actions and choices are objectively wrong, no matter where one stands with their values or beliefs, all parties from different backgrounds can objectively, factually agree that he was in the wrong and should be persecuted for his actions. However, renowned established film studios such as DC Studio, which is under Warner Brothers, actively choosing to star him in The Flash movie showcases their disregard for the implications of placing them in the spotlight.

Cancel culture tends to go after those who barely committed a sin, but somehow those who committed actual crimes seem to slip away from the repercussions of the voice of the masses.
