—————Could you tell us the process/circumstances leading to your first award?

Terajima - When I brought the wrestling manga I drew (his 4th work) into the “Weekly Shounen Magazine” editorial department, the one that was in charge of it was the current editor in chief.

.

—————I see. So from there, the joint creative activities of two people began.

.

Terajima - That’s right. However, for a while, I was only told, “Please draw your next work.” While I was working part-time, I continued to draw “sports manga” and “gang manga” alternately. About a year later, I was told that the baseball manga I drew after the work I brought in had won an award, and I thought, “Eh?..That one from a long time ago?”. I think they were probably testing my motivation. After that, I was also introduced to an assistant job for Inoue Masaharu sensei’s “Marathon Man” that was being serialized.

—————In order to become a mangaka, what did you start with?

.

Terajima - Takahashi sensei told me “Go to Tokyo for the time being” and “Draw a manga and send it to a publisher”, so that was that (laughs) . I couldn’t find what I wanted to do and was in a haze, I used my own feelings from those days to make a manga and sent it to an editorial department. It was sent back immediately though (laughs) .

—————So you were familiar with manga since the time you were playing baseball. When did you actually start thinking about becoming a mangaka?

.

Terajima - It was when I read “Close” by Takahashi Hiroshi sensei. When I was a 3rd year in highschool, I borrowed it from a junior and experienced a shock. By the time I enrolled in college, I had collected the whole volume. Then, as an omake for the comics, Takahashi sensei wrote “I became a mangaka this way” and I gradually became aware of the occupation called “sleeping mangaka”.

—————Setting aside the completely self-taught amateur era, please tell us about the period before you made your debut as a mangaka. Since when did sensei(Terajima)-who was a baseball boy-started drawing manga?

Terajima — If we’re talking about doodle level, since elemantary school. I remember imitating “Dragonball”. After that I was affected by “Kin’nikuman” then “Jojo’s Strange Adventure”.

Araki sensei’s drawing is cool because he can firmly draw the lips. I couldn’t draw the lips well at all so I practiced for a long time. I didn’t draw a lot when I was a highschool student but it was about this time that I started reading “Weekly Shonen Magazine”. In fact, the first magazine I bought was the issue when “Hajime no Ippo” started its serialization. Now being serialized in the same magazine, I feel like it’s destiny.

Before I get started on guidebook translations, this was a birthday timeline I drew up for reference according to their respective age groups.

There may be an error with Matsubara Nao’s age group because at the time I did this, I was unsure if he was to be in 90 or 91liners. Other characters have no such problems.

There are a few characters here that are from act ii. Some of them have been introduced in the new anime episode or opening-ending. They are mostly the new students from some of the major teams.

This was done with characters I knew and a new one will be done once another guidebook with new characters gets published.

Hi guys! Hsena here. Some of you may know me from discord as HsenaLina so I decided to keep the name for this blog too.

I will be translating little tidbits and interview parts from the Ace of Diamond official guidebooks Ura and Omote. There may be parts already translated but I have not seen any full book translations before so I decided to take the matters into my own hands.
