Alright, I think I like tumblr now.

A pun post crossed my dash, and I reblogged it with an equally bad pun in return. A couple of my followers find it funny, it's a good day for everyone.

That was on July 7th.

Virality on Reddit was entirely algorithmic. You could garner a couple crossposts, but the success of a post was entirely dependent on whether or not it hit r/all--the main page of Reddit. If your post does that, it's immediately exposed to 10x the number of people and immediately gets upvoted.

On my pun post, I get a couple reblogs. And those reblogs get a couple reblogs--nobody really adds any content to the post, it just gets a couple reblogs here and there.

There's a specific chain of reblogs that I'd like to focus on. The most popular post on this chain has about 25 reblogs on it. Half the posts have three reblogs or fewer. Five posts in this chain have just one reblog total.

But the reblog chain keeps going. And going. It breaches containment many times over. And finally, after a chain THIRTY SIX posts long, at 9:30 AM, July 22nd this morning, it hits a popular account.

99% percent of the people who have seen the post--virtually unchanged from how it left my dash--have seen it because it was curated by 36 different people. That's insane to me.

None of those 36 people know that they're part of this chain. They saw a post, reblogged it, and moved on. If any one of these people had not reblogged, the post would have a fraction of the impact it has.

And yet, after two weeks, the post has effectively hit the main page of tumblr. It was picked up, only because people liked it enough to show it to their followers. There were no algorithms necessary.

You really, truly, cannot get this on any other website.

this post's hypothetical by itself is already ridiculous but the thing that gets me is how the wording implies two very funny things that become funnier in tandem

1. "Accidentally, the pitcher tosses a Christian baby" means this is a mistake on the pitcher's part. i imagine the pitcher is breastfeeding on the field and they pitch and they look down at their hands and they see the ball still in the glove and they go "fuck"

2. hitting the baby will still win you the game

I need you to know that I am living for your what if lost in found fanfic right now. I have reread it so many times now, and it makes my heart feel full. Thank you dear seal. 🦭

Hehehe, but more seriously thank you so much <333 It's so nice to hear people have actually been enjoying my ISAT Omegaverse pieces, and especially that one with how fricking long it is even though it's not even fully finished as much as the current stopping point works as an end point of sorts! (can you believe that I wrote the current four chapters in less than two weeks? this fanfic consumed my life too)

The next updates (yes, multiple!) are taking a lot longer due to a combination of projects I've signed up for, me being on vacation for a few weeks, going to con, art fight looming in the horizon, getting sick twice within this month (including currently though I'm hopeful I'll be healthy soon!) and me wanting to make sure the later updates won't make previous ones feel like they're missing something (specifically the small interlude that so far is actually all done)!

And also just... being plain distracted and unable to focus, oops.

But I can promise I have no intention of leaving the fic there! It WILL get at least a few more chapters, it's just going to be a while.

I will most likely end up writing what remains of the fic to completion first, then drop the rest of the update every few days like I did with chapters 3 & 4!

Anyway thank you again, this was such a wonderful thing to see first thing after waking up, and have an impromptu status update on the state of the fic!

(which might have been warranted sooner already maybe idk but it absolutely didn't cross my mind, I'm still fairly new to actually posting fanfic on ao3)
