"Whenever I visit museums I am always drawn to landscapes no matter the genre. The most obvious influence from landscape traditions would be in the depiction of the sublime. "I think drawing and sculpture are the two arms within my studio, but printmaking tends to provide material and serial logics for both sides. "The figures are all in conflict and are locked together in a state of unrest. I insert the figures in a cut, collage-like fashion and my aim is to weave them in and out of the timeline landscape, so to speak. I do want the viewer to relate to the figures but not quite see them. I am looking for a kind of wandering experience with the paintings and they are often painted as a panorama with several works connecting together in order to become experiential and overwhelming. "In my personal life I have found that in order to get anyone to listen to my story at all I’ve had to lighten the details significantly, use comforting language, even supplement with humor. To recount the weighty suffering that accompanies sexual trauma with a sense of levity is both an internal coping mechanism and a conditioned response from growing up in an environment that constantly warned me that my feelings would make others uncomfortable, so in order to spare anyone else from hurting I should protect them from what hurts me." "I divide space in a way that resembles a moveable game board, creating sections and pairing objects together. Frequently I use fabrics and other materials that resemble activity mats as a foundation for work. I’ve been doing a lot of felting lately, which is often labeled as craft (but I don’t think it has to be). The objects I’ve been felting resemble toys. I like to make clay pieces that are readable in multiple ways at the same time. A lump of clay may also resemble a wonky bird or butterfly, with just enough information that it suggests what is recognizable." "I think the dichotomy of softness and power in the work that I make is connected to an exterior and interior self. As an other, my exterior self strives to appear forceful, competent, and strong.
