This is so good!
If I was a kid of this generation, this would be at the top of my list of favorite books. It’s Men in Black, Harry Potter, Spy Kids, and Percy Jackson all rolled into one. Amari and the Night Brothers is a fun, mystery, adventure-fantasy tale that follows a young Black girl, Amari Peters, who enlists in a hidden society known as the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs after discovering a ticking briefcase in her missing older brother’s closet. Traveling from Rosewood low-income housing projects to an ordinary place on the outside where mermaids, aliens, dwarves, witches, magicians, dragons, and other creatures actually do exist on the inside, Amari must compete for a spot against other children who’ve always known of this organization while on a secret mission of her own: to find out what happened to her missing brother. Penned by B.B. Alston (pictured above holding the two alternative covers), this magical debut middle-grade novel, which is the first book in his trilogy series, touches on topics like bullying, classism, and racist microaggressions. The whole time I was reading (or should I say flying through this book), I kept thinking, “This should be made into a movie.” Well turns out 17-year-old Marsai Martin’s got that covered 😏. She is set to produce and star in the flick.

I can’t wait. Now on to book 2.

@jnlnyaface oh that’s such a good point! I didn’t even think of that. What department do you think she would go into?
Okay but I cannot wait to see what Jayden does when he finally gets to join the Bureau. What field is he going to go into? I kinda wanna see him and Amari become partners in Supernatural Investigations but I also want to know what Jayden’s passion is (and learn more about the other departments).

Barnes and Noble sent me an email saying that the release date for Amari and The Great Game has been pushed back to April 2022 but Google says the release date is still February 2022. Does anyone know anything about this?

@arushahisatroll He does when he’s in his Magiciangirl18 disguise
“I flash an image of Elsie freaking out that time I turned her hair pink.”
Why did you choose pink, Amari? Did it...remind you of someone?

Oh my god I just saw the notification. This is amazing!
@magiciangirl18 I wrote the thing :D
Darkness had a way of making itself infinite. Unfortunately, that was the last thing Dylan Van Helsing wanted — to be imprisoned in a small, unlit room with no visible door, no chair, no clock, no distractions whatsoever from the drone of his heart in the shadows.
Equally unfortunately, he wasn’t given a choice.

Amari: so you’re in a magical coma and you can mentally do whatever you want, what are you doing?
Quinton: ✨fishing✨
Amari: seems like a waste of a coma.

“That you have found these pages speaks to a willingness to wield more than what fair magick can provide. However, this pursuit comes with a dire warning. The foul magick contained on the following pages is not for the faint of heart. As I learned in their creation, uttering these spells will cost you. For once innocence is lost, it cannot be regained.”
So does this mean that once you use foul magic your magic/mind/soul is corrupted and you can’t go back?
Or does it just mean that it’ll keep you up at night in a “well now you know that terrible things can be done with magic?”
How did you guys interpret this?

When Amari used that magnafobia spell on Lara, did everyone get to see Lara’s fear? Elsie tells Amari not to use that spell again, was it just because Lara was crying or because everyone saw the vision?
Either way, it’s kind of unique that Amari went with Lara into the vision and saw what Lara’s biggest fear was for herself. Usually something like that would be viewed from the outside, where we would only see Lara crying and blubbering about it after the fact. But Amari went with her, got to witness it herself. I think that’s a cool bit of writing and also really cements that you have to kinda want to use foul magic. You don’t get to hide from the consequences.

LOL it’s great
[text reads:
Dylan: I have made a good decision for the benefit of magiciankind
Literally Everyone Else: you fucked up a perfectly good Amari is what you did. Look at her. She’s got trust issues.]
Honestly, though, Amari is so good. She sees that vision of a little snake protecting her and goes “it must be Dylan.” She really believed in him.

I’m low key worried that, because I haven’t seen a lot of chatter about it, the books didn’t sell enough and Alston won’t be able to write the rest of the series. Talk about my worst nightmare. This is such a good book and it really deserves to be a good series.

I don’t think I’ve said this enough, but Imani Parks did a phenomenal job narrating Amari and the Night Brothers. I hope they get her to do the rest of the series.

I don’t think we get Maria’s exact age. All we know is that the kids are all roughly the same age and that Quinton is 10 years older than Amari. It’s implied that partners are around the same age since they train together so Maria would probably be 23 too.
the second I try to write something about Amari and the Night Brothers I swear it’s all head empty no thoughts

What’s in your pants?
Dylan: MAGIC!
I know that magiciangirl18 was “just” a disguise for Dylan, but I like to imagine that she’s more than that. That she’s an outward expression of both Dylan’s rebellion and his gender fluidity. Partially a big “fuck you, dad, I’m going to be a magic girl” but also a little part of himself that wants to experiment with his gender and make his body his own temple rather than be forced into the strict restrictions and boxes that Director Van Helsing imposes upon his children.
I just think that this boy disguising himself as an older girl with pink hair and tattoo sleeves up both arms is indicative of what’s going on in his head. And I want to see more of Dylan using her.

The answer is of course you should write fic about it and then send me a link so that I can read it. lol
Side note: I know from experience that it takes 10 separate fics to make a fandom tag an actual tag on AO3 and I don’t know if I’ve got a whole 10 fics in me (it’s to be determined) but I think we should try to make Supernatural Investigations a “real” fandom tag.
