Reading posts in the Rei Furuya tag, I genuinely don't think any of you understand Rei as a character lmao. So many people are thirsty for Dark and Edgy Rei(tm) that they forget how Rei USED to be before his friends died. I've read so many posts and responses of "I hate ZTT because Rei is too cutesy in it!!" Buddy did you not read/watch Wild Police Story??? Did you not see how happy he used to be with his friends??? If you're going to talk about Rei, you gotta acknowledge the fact that these other identities he's made have to come from somewhere. If you're going to call him your favorite character, atleast acknowledge that he's a complex character that isn't just dark and edgy. - Kazami of Nightwatchers System

people often say that akai and furuya have a lot in common and can understand each other most because they've both been in the BO and both lost someone to the BO. but what about the resemblance between kir and furuya, who are both survivor!NOCs and also both lost someone extremely dear to them to the BO in traumatic circumstances? like literally both "witnessing" the death, seeing the corpse of that dear person before them? a dear person undercover just like them who got grilled by the BO and died because of it? why does no one ever question whether these two could understand each other better than anyone in the world?

Rei wakes up after being shot, and suddenly everything is different.

Rei tries to blink his eyes open, but it’s way too bright. He instantly closes them again and tries to assess the situation with his other senses. First of all, he’s pretty sure he’s alive. His lungs are obediently pumping air into and out of his body, and there’s an unpleasant, dull pain in his shoulder that he probably wouldn’t be feeling if he were dead.  He can tell that he’s lying in a bed, covered with a thick blanket, and considering the pain, he must have been injured somehow. His right arm seems to be fixated with some kind of sling and is pretty much immobile. Maybe he’s in a hospital. The foggy feeling in his head indicates that he’s on strong painkillers. There’s a very faint memory of a dream he might have just had. But it’s all shadows and smoke. There were people and guns. There was darkness and fear...but that’s about all he can remember.  Rather than trying to recall what that sinister dream was about, he decides to use his limited, still awakening mental capacity to remember who he is. He goes through the basics. His name is Furuya Rei. He’s twenty-...uhh...nine years old. He grew up in Tokyo. Currently lives in Tokyo. Unfortunately, the rest is extremely blurry at this point. There are voices. Rei’s brain is working annoyingly slowly, but he knows that he’s heard these voices before. One of them seems to belong to a child, the other to a teenager. He tries to focus on their conversation. Maybe it’ll help him remember what happened because he currently has no idea...

Gin confronts Rei, and it ain't pretty.

As Rei is driving back to his apartment, thinking he might still have time to change his dog-hair-covered sweater before the meeting, Bourbon’s phone buzzes. Fuck.  He checks the message after stopping at a red light. It’s Gin. A cold shiver runs down Rei’s spine. Bourbon reports to Rum and Vermouth. What does Gin want from him? It’s an order to meet him at the docks in half an hour. “Why now?” Rei sighs and types a quick message to Shūichi on his other phone. Will be late. Don’t wait for me. When the traffic light turns green, Rei steps on the gas and jerks the wheel around, making a swift U-turn. Speeding down the expressway a few minutes later, he’s overcome with doubt. Gin has ordered Rei to come to the same warehouse where he’d held Kir and Bourbon captive last time he suspected them to be moles.  He doesn’t have a good feeling about this. Maybe he should inform someone about his meeting with Gin. Just in case. Then again, he wouldn’t want Kazami or any other PSB officer to get caught in the crossfire. No, Rei needs to deal with this particular matter on his own...

Phantom Talk

Rei finds himself talking with phantoms... A phantom thief, the ghost of a dead friend, and an FBI dog who's officially dead too.

“How could you infiltrate another agent without informing me? And why did it have to be Kudō Shinichi, of all people?”  Rei is back in the Kudōs’ entranceway, confronting the man he thought he’d never see again. At least now he has another reason to be angry with him. This time Shūichi is wearing his Okiya Subaru mask, but without the colored contact lenses. Behind the glasses, his dazzling green eyes keep wandering back and forth between Rei and the teenager Rei is holding firmly by the collar of his denim jacket. For an FBI agent who should be in the know, Shūichi looks...pretty confused. Instead of answering Rei’s question, he remarks with a quizzical look, “Last night, you said we’d never see each other again.” “You don’t have to parrot my own words back at me!” Rei hisses, fuming. “I’m not an idiot! I know what I said, but obviously something has come up. Someone.” Pointing at the kid, he snaps, “He could be dead now! I had no idea who he was and that I had to protect him!” “Uhm, actually, I protected you,” Moonshine cheekily interjects. “Sounds like this is your ex, huh? Where’s the dog?” “Shut up when the grownups are talking!” Rei barks, directing his angry gaze at Shūichi again. “Can you confirm that this is Kudō Shinichi?” Okiya Subaru looks like he still can’t quite follow the conversation, and Rei has to fight a sudden urge to slap him.
