YCBK 259: Admission expert Jon Boeckenstedt Interview
In this episode you will hear:
(09:20) Mark and Dave discuss an article by Jay Matthews, Columnist for the Washington Post that appeared on July 31, 2022 entitled: “High School extracurriculars are nice. College extracurriculars are huge. Dave and Mark talk about why college extracurriculars are so valuable to the student who participates.
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/07/31/college-extracurriculars-impact-life/
(31:00) For our question from a listener, Lisa and Mark answer a question from Ellen of Massachusetts. Ellen wants to know, should a student submit a perfectly good 32 even if it is below the 25% range, knowing pre-pandemic, in this example, that this was in the 50% range. I would think a good test score would help the student show their academic prowess normally, but with our current naturally inflated test scores, it could hurt them. That is what many families are struggling with
(58:30) Our interview is with Jon Boeckenstedt, the Vice Provost of Oregon State University . In this two-part interview Jon will answer questions about whether certain practices are ethical or unethical in college admissions
  Preview of Part 1
Jon shares his very interesting backstory
Jon tells us what Draw rate is and why it is so important
Jon explains what he means by, ‘we all serve two masters”
Jon rates a number of admission business practice from 0-100 on whether they cross a line of impropriety
Jon rates, “targeting students in your recruitment that are outside the profile of who you normally admit”
Jon explains what he means by “grist for the rejection mill” and the “admissions industrial complex”
Jon rates using demonstrated interest and gives it a score, but he has some caveats
There is no college Spotlight this week.
(01:09:55) The recommended resource is  Paul Tough’s book, “Whatever it Takes”: Geoffrey Canada’s quest to change Harlem and America
    .

YCBK 257: Be a College Admission Data Scientist
In this episode you will hear:
Mark and Julia discuss part 3 of Brennan Barnard’s excellent article that appeared in Forbes on June 9th, 2022, “Be a College Admission Data Scientist”. The article covers many areas where colleges could be more transparent about their data, so you need to probe. We also examine the dilemma colleges face:  if they share more, they open themselves up to criticism and misinterpretation of their data.
(26:38) If you are a fan of YCBK’s lengthy episodes, Mark and Julia, recorded the longest “In the News” in YCBK history. Mark and Julia cover a range of topics from why are so many teachers quitting to what your student needs to do to research the colleges they are applying to
  https://www.forbes.com/sites/brennanbarnard/2022/06/09/be-a-college-admission-data-scientist/?sh=7e2b0c416d8a
(01:13:42) For our question from a listener, it is bonus content time. Lisa leads Mark with a discussion about what parents can do if their own child is feeling devalued because they may not be admitted to an elite college. This is a two-part question. The first part was answered on episode 255 and the final part is answered here on episode 257.
(01:37:58) Our interview is with Heath Einstein, the Dean of Admissions. In Part 3 of 3, Mark and Julia discuss the following:
  Preview of Part 3
What college majors did we not ask you about that are every bit as strong as the ones we did ask you about but they fly under the radar?
We know that academic rigor, grades and grade trends are important in admission but what role do the following things play in admission decisions
One of our co-host Vince Garcia from California wants to know, do you admit by college or by major, and which programs are the hardest to get into?
What advice do you have on college essays and how they impact TCU admission decisions
What is the Freedom of Expression and how does that impact admissions decisions
What are some of the institutional priorities of TCU?
Heath goes on the hotseat in our lightning round and wait until you hear what he says about Albert Einstein!
The TCU interview with Dean of Admissions, Heath Einstein will also serve as our college spotlight.
(01:51:42) The recommended resource is  https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/
The website contains lots of discussions about wall street carreers, including which colleges have a good track record of placing kids in which Wall Street jobs.
We omitted the recommended resource in last Thursday’s (Episode 255) Show Notes, so we are including it here: Accepted! 50 Successful College Admission Essays 4th Edition

(59:00) Our question from a listener, comes from Cadence, a student a Stuyvesant HS in NYC. Cadence sent in two questions about interviews that we will answer over the next two weeks:
If I am asked, what other schools are you applying to, how am I supposed to answer that question.

Part 1
  Welcome and Greetings
Julia shares how she met Heath
Heath gives his backstory
Heath answers the question, “Who is TCU”
How does the mission at TCU impact the educational experience
I find that both TCU and SMU are at times challenging for students to consider as a goof fit for their college list if they don’t identify as Methodist or Christian , how would you answer the question, why should I consider TCU if I don’t identify as a Christian?
The mascot at TCU is a “horn Frog”; what is a Horn Frog?
TCU is known for its School spirit, the Horned Frogs, where does this come from and how does it impact the student experience?
TCU is also known for friendly people and a strong sense of community, same question, where does this come from and what does this look like?
Describe the TCU campus?

(55:00) Our interview is with Dr. Robert Alexander, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. In Part 2 of 2, Mark and Dr. Alexander discuss the following:
For your BS/MD program (Rochester Early Medical Scholars): what’s the process and the profile of an admitted student?
Talk to us about how your Early Assurance partnerships work for a number of Liberal Arts schools that do not have medical schools
What are your priorities in the application evaluation process: what are you looking for in terms of academics, personal qualities, diversity that may differ from some other schools?
What types of students are underrepresented on your campus that you are hoping to enroll more of over the next five years?
UR is known for its merit funding; are applicants automatically considered, what are the criteria and the range of the merit scholarships?
What are UR students happiest about?
What would they like to change?
How would you describe the city of Rochester to a student who is unfamiliar with upstate NY (including the weather!)?
What other colleges/universities would you say are the most similar to UR?
Mark puts Robert on the hotseat for our lightening round
The University of Rochester interview will also serve as our college spotlight.
(01:12:42) The recommended resource is  Nathan Grawe’s most recent book: “The Agile College” How institutions successfully navigate demographic changes. The book gives colleges tools to help them to thrive when demographic trends are working against them.

YCBK 249: College admissions, who knows what?
In this episode you will hear:
(16:20) Mark and Julia discuss a June 6th article in Forbes by Brennan Barnard entitled, “College admissions, who knows what”. This is the  first piece of this three-part series examined the issues around transparency in college admission. Mark and Julia will discuss all three of these articles for three consecutive months
  https://www.forbes.com/sites/brennanbarnard/2022/06/06/college-admission-who-knows-what/?sh=48f213553274
(36:20) For our question from a listener, comes from Nina from Massachusetts and she wants to know:
My son has played the trumpet since the 4th grade and when we started high school he made the decision that he wanted to stay in Concert Band which I fully support. Because band meets 4x per week it limits him in his ability to take other courses. For example, our high school offers an engineering certificate if you complete certain courses. Because of his choice to stay in band, he's not able to take many electives and has to choose among those that will fit with his other core classes. Is this something we need to explain to schools?
(01:13:00) Our interview is with Dr. Robert Alexander, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. In Part 1 of 2, Mark and Dr. Alexander discuss the following:
Introduction and Greetings
Robert, give us your backstory, walk us up to various admission roles you have had and what you are doing today?
Robert, take 3-5 minutes to explain UR to someone who knows nothing about UR?
Describe a student who thrives at UR?
How “open” is UR’s open curriculum?  What are some unusual ways that students take advantage of it?
What is the university’s relationship with Medical Center complex? Are undergrads involved?
The University of Rochester interview will also serve as our college spotlight.
(01:20:35) The recommended resource is “Breaking Ranks” How the Rankings Industry Rules Higher Education and what to do about it” by Colin Driver, President of Reed College
  .
