Week 17 Blog
The Alchemist
Paulo Coelho
Pages Read: 70-130
Word Count: 365
Summary:
In this week’s reading, the boy is setting up his journey towards the Egypt. He encounters two men that might stick with him for some time while they all travel together to the same place. The boy mentioned that he was looking after a treasure, so did the Englishman, one of the two men. He mentioned the alchemist, and that he lived in the surrounding for where they were going to. They stopped at a close oasis to find the alchemist, and that’s what this section is all about.
Critical Analysis:
While the Englishman was searching through the village for the alchemist, he used a excited tone to declare his idea. “The Englishman’s eyes lit up. 'That’s it! Maybe no one here knows what an alchemist is! Find out who it is who cures the people’s illnesses!’“ (94). If I were directing the actor who is playing the Englishman here, I would instruct he to say this line in a excited tone, that way the audience would know that he’s really close to find where the alchemist is. Then, Fatima, a woman from the oasis, talks about how the desert is and how tough it could be for the men out there. “Those who don’t return become a part of the clouds, a part of the animals that hide in the ravines and of the water that comes from the earth.” (101) Even though, Fatima only said that “Those who don’t return become a part of the clouds”, I mean inferring that she used euphemism to replace death as becoming part of the clouds and not returning.
Personal Analysis:
Right now, I’m climbing the climax of the whole story where the boy starts to look forward to find the alchemist. So far, there was a lot of introduction to new characters, and it’s speeding up really fast in way of being more catching. Even though it introduced the Englishman just about a few pages down, it creates this kind of mystery within him and the way he acts, but more later on, he starts to open more himself and give away his personality.
