I’ve been doing some thinking.

Okay so I have been analysing the Delicate video and look what I have found.

In this clip- Taylor is walking forward before she stops, takes a few steps back, and then walks forward again. Notice where she stops. It’s right before a corridor that has the sign “historic corridor”. In the documentary - she talks about wanting to be on the right side of history. In this clip, just before she’s about to walk to the right side of the corridor, or the right side of history, she takes a few steps back. I think her body guards represent the people in her team- saying that she needs to keep her political views silent in order to keep her safe. When she takes a few steps back, her security team follow her, but she rolls her eyes, becomes frustrated and continues walking forward anyway.

Edit: I think when she takes steps back - this also represents her frustration that she didn’t vocalise her opinions during the US 2016 election for fear of deprecation- and that the whole issue around her safety and up keeping her image/reputation was part of her remaining apolitical. In the documentary she says something along the lines of being told to not do what the Dixie Chicks did.

Then- when she sees her body guards (or her team who want to protect her and keep her apolitical) in the next scenes - she rips off her dress. While the immediate meaning of this is her finding herself as she disappears from the world and goes into hiding- this eventually becomes symbolic of her ripping away the identity of an apolitical “good girl” constructed for her by her management team. In the final scene- she walks into a bar- without being surrounded by her team of guards and comes into the spotlight once more- but this time - she is different. She smiles at the camera - but this time it’s a genuine smile. Not like the fake smiles she gave the reporters in the beginning. After finding herself, she is finally ready to show the world where she truly stands- and let them know what she truly thinks.

Someday the people we love will be gone. Enjoy the time you have with them! Tell them you love them as often as you can. Don't fight over stupid things. Memorize all the little things! Before it's too late

Never grow up was one of my favourite songs growing up. And now that I am grown up it hits differently. And I really wish I'd never grown up.
