He certainly appreciates it, but there are times where he finds it unnecessary because it’s well known what he is and is not good at. He gets the impression that someone is sucking up to him when they praise him too often.

The Royal Protector raised his brow, then his eyes to the woman who gifted the bottle to him. Her voice was softer than he expected, and her touch not so harmful. Any finger she laid on him would do little to harm him, however, the sudden calm that seemed to cloud her caught his attention more than the alcohol. 

Corvo took it in one hand and allowed his other to rest upon his belt. He relaxed in his seat and met her expectant eyes. “You shouldn’t have.”

The air did not carry the tension and static energy that he had only just grown accustomed to. Tonight, the atmosphere was light and the mood was kind. The fellow Serkonan’s eyes were brighter; the grave nature of his job did not carry over. Corvo reasoned it was a change of spirit that he finally gave into, or it was the whiskey - it was commonly the whiskey. The Royal Protector smiled back at the swaying assassin, drink upon the table. He found his hands to be far too untrustworthy that evening to handle the glass among other things.

Corvo dropped his eyes to the amber spirit trapped in the tumbler before him. Raven hair framed the sharper features that relaxed at the sound of Daud’s voice. It had been so long, it seemed. Months of winter keep the nobles cooped up and business far away from the lax comforts that the higher class refused to indulge in. A cozy spot away from the restrictions of the court; a love interest of the Empress’s bodyguard would seem scandalous only because the Royal Protector was far more human than they thought. A decent drink with decent company kept the chaotic habits at bay. Daud was no peacekeeper; only he worked when paid a decent amount, and Corvo offered no coin. So perhaps the lack of work further cemented the pleasant mood for the both of them.

The bodyguard tapped his glass and raised his eyes to the Knife of Dunwall. “Nothing close to it, I promise you that,” Corvo mused, another tiny smile stretching his features. ”But I know enough for my own purposes.’

Daud smiled and took a draw from the cigar between his lips as he stared ahead across the bar to the lights behind it. He slouched on his stool and crossed his arms over the table. As he took it from his mouth, he laughed in Corvo’s direction and looked around loose strands of raven hair at the bodyguards passive expression. Corvo took a drink from his glowing tumbler and set it back down without looking in Daud’s direction. 

It had been a while since Daud had met Corvo in a good mood-regarding himself. Lately, the assassin had been indifferent, irritable or constantly bitter. Tonight wasn’t too different from the other’s, but Corvo’s presence was not met with the usual animosity; the usual tension and aggravation. Either Daud was too tired to bother with his usual routine or he was more of a lightweight than he had originally thought. 

He hardly had the mental energy to decide. 

“I didn’t think so.” he grinned. “I hardly took you for a zoologist.”
