Next Touhou game, 16.5, is called “Secret Sealing Nightmare Diary ~ *Violet* Detector” and Sumireko is the main character in it. If you remove “ko” from Sumeriko’s name you’ll get “Sumire” which means violet on japanese, Yukari on japanese also means violet.  Yukari has connections with Maribel, Maribel is the best friend of Renko, Renko has connection with Sumireko by both having “Usami” last name, so Yukari has connection with Sumireko. On one of the 16.5 screenshots there is Reimu, she had team with Yukari in Touhou 8 IN and it was called “Boundary Team”. Reimu was the target of the Mima’s pranks in PC-98. Mima confirmed.

You’re so right, I didn’t even think of all those indicators.  The Eldest Daughter one is what always struck me as most indicative.  If they’re an adult, and therefore actually on their own, you’d probably call her by a more fitting title.  Daughter is practically a confirmation that she’s young.  Early teens at best, I always felt.

Really, Tenshi’s fanon conceptualization is probably my most disliked.  There are plenty of fanon memes that caught on that I despise, but none quite like Tenshi.  I like Tenshi a lot, but it’s specifically because she’s a poorly-socialized child.  She’s lived in heaven basically all her life, and is bored as shit.  When all you’ve ever known is that tranquility, it’s boring and lacks the comparative appeal that most people would have.  Her AFiEU article is one of my favorites because of how well it captures that; she’s so bored and it carries this feel of teenage ennui about the whole thing.  She just wants to have fun and experience more than constant peace, because the joys of peace lack context for her.  Looking down at the people in Gensokyo, Tenshi sees them getting into all sorts of situations that, to her, seem fun, even if they’re a massive pain and inconvenience to the ones undergoing it.  She causes the incident solely for funsies; she just wants to experience what the others have, and doesn’t seem to really understand how much impact it has on others.  To her, it’s just a fun game.  She can always retreat back to the safety of heaven when she’s had her fill, and as of AoCF, it sounds like her luck stat is just so high that any legitimate misfortune can’t really impact her.  She can’t empathize with how people on earth have to live their lives, and doesn’t have the experience to understand what it’s like to experience suffering or any kind of misfortune.  Even the plan for everyone to fight Tenshi in a running gauntlet didn’t seem to impact her, because she’s just so tough.  She’s a spoiled brat who’s pretty much immune to consequences by virtue of being really strong and ridiculously fortunate.  Combined with her boredom with the status of heaven, and she’s honestly kind of an obnoxious character that’s hard to reason with or keep under control.  Fortunately, it seems like she just wants to experience things in the sense of goofing off, like experiencing weird earth cuisine or managing a festival at the shrine.  A pain in the ass, but not necessarily dangerous until she gets a really reckless idea into her head.  At least, that’s how I’ve interpreted her character.

So it’s always confounded me that fanon went to BDSM as a thing.  Like, first off, she’s a teen at oldest, and that’s still Real Bad.  But second, where did this come from?  She wants to experience things like they are on earth, but there’s no indication she likes pain or has any idea of masochism at all.  It’s just an experience that will have no lasting consequence for her.  I don’t understand how that connection was made, and I’m upset that this was the element that became a fanon meme.
