hi    cuties    so    a    little    activity    update    :  so we all know your girl barely writes anyways. and i was going to start back up soon , but forgot that ramadan is upon us. so hungry tas means braindead tas , so until may 13th / 14th expect like super low activity. might get some stuff out on the weekends , but that’s if my brain can push through. consider it a semi - hiatus , consider it who knows what , but i’ll be more available on discord for plotting. but in general i’ll be spottier than usual.

❝   AND   DO   YOU   REGRET   IT   ?   ❞   It’s   a   rhetorical   question   because   anyone   who   knows   Melody   is   well   aware   that   she’ll   never   take   no   for   an   answer.   With   a   bright   grin,   she   carries   her   sneakers   over   her   shoulders.   She   had   peeled   them   off   her   feet   the   minute   they’d   made   it   to   the   quiet   stretch   of   sand.   In   the   glow   of   the   rising   sun,   the   water   before   them   shimmered   and   its   reflection   seemed   to   shine   in   her   eyes.   ❝   Just   look   at   it,   Bell.   It’s   gorgeous   !   ❞   Melody   had   quickly   realized   that   finding   a   beach   in   Los   Angeles   that   wasn’t   crowded   with   tourists   and   social   media   influencers   was   quite   the   task.   Ever   up   for   a   challenge,   she   had   spent   a   sleepless   weekend   scouring   both   paper   and   digital   maps   for   her   new   haven.   Just   two   hours   outside   the   city   didn’t   sound   too   bad   until   it   meant   getting   up   early   enough   to   avoid   the   rush.

Lack   of   sleep   doesn’t   faze   her   when   the   cool   breeze   hits   her   face.   It   washes   away   the   worries   of   the   day,   and   despite   Bell’s   sleepy   objections,   she   believes   it’s   the   optimal   way   to   start   their   day.   ❝   Ready   ?   ❞   Without   specifying   for   what,   she   tosses   her   bag   aside   and   grabs   her   friend’s   hand.   Ignoring   any   objections,   she   kicks   off   in   a   bee   line   for   the   water,   only   stopping   when   they’re   knee   deep   and   she   can   barely   feel   her   legs   from   the   shock   of   cold.   ❝   Awake   yet   ?   ❞   She   laughs   above   the   sound   of   the   shallow   waves   hitting   the   shore.   The   mischievous   glint   in   her   eyes   is   not   enough   of   a   warning   for   the   trouble   to   come   as   tosses   a   handful   of   water   at   Bell.   ❝   How   about   now   ?   ❞

❝   WHOA   WHOA   WHOA,   ❞   Despite   the   hold   she   has   on   the   back   of   his   jacket,   she’s   not   sure   how   much   it’s   slowing   him   down.   With   both   height   and   strength   in   his   favour,   Melody   finds   herself   dragging   her   heels   behind   him.   They   were   garnering   unwanted   attention,   so   Melody   exhales   a   sigh   of   defeat   before   letting   go   in   her   attempt   to   anchor   Jay.   Instead,   she   kicks   Plan   B   into   action   and   scurries   to   plant   herself   in   front   of   him,   arms   spread   out.   A   human   blockade   with   staunch   determination   written   across   her   face   stands   before   him.   ❝   You   can’t   do   that   !   ❞

The   loud   exclamation   paired   with   her   stance   draws   a   handful   of   nosy   looks,   so   she   drops   her   voice   to   a   hushed   whisper.   ❝   You   can’t   do   that.   ❞   Letting   her   hands   fall   back   to   her   sides,   she   looks   up   at   him   with   wide   eyes.   ❝   It’s   not   that   big   of   a   deal   anyways.   Yeah,   fish   in   a   locker   is   kind   of   a   dick   move,   but   I   did   call   him   a   yellow-bellied   flounder.   ❞   She   can’t   hold   back   the   triumphant   grin   on   her   lips,   chest   swelling   with   pride   at   what   she   thinks   is   her   most   clever   insult   to   date.   Melody   doesn’t   even   mind   the   smell   if   she’s   really   honest.   ❝   If   you   really   wanna   get   back   at   him,   you   need   to   help   me   figure   out   how   to   get   back   at   him.   Without   all   the   fists   of   fury   stuff.   ❞

❝   IT’S   NOT   THAT   SIMPLE.   ❞   The   grief   of   a   young   girl   plagued   with   unrequited   romance   never   is.   Colour   rises   to   her   cheeks   as   she   considers   telling   Allie   her   ever-so-shameful   secret.   She   averts   stormy   eyes   anywhere   except   on   the   face   of   the   curiously   naive   brunette   as   her   fingers   nervously   toy   with   the   locket   around   her   neck.   ❝   Thing   is,   ❞   Stopping   abruptly   in   her   tracks,   she   chews   on   her   bottom   lip   in   consideration.   On   one   hand:   she   tells   Allie   the   truth   and   their   friendship   blossoms   as   they   gossip   about   their   teenage   fixations.   On   the   other   hand:   she   tells   Allie   the   truth   and   their   friendship   crumbles   under   the   weight   of   Melody’s   pathetic   crush.   Everything   is   rather   do   or   die   at   the   peak   of   girlhood.

She   makes   her   decision   with   a   determined   deep   inhale.   She   mutters   under   her   breath   and   her   words   slur   together   in   a   last   hope   that   Allie   won’t   quite   make   out   her   confession.   ❝   So,   um,   we’ve   never   actually   spoken.   ❞   The   words   just   barely   make   it   out   of   her   mouth   before   she’s   adding   to   it   with   a   shake   of   her   head.   ❝   Forget   I   said   anything,   it’s   not   a   big   deal,   boys   aren’t   a   big   deal,   it’s   really   just   not   a   big   deal.   ❞

an interesting aspect of merfolk and their civilization, specifically with respect to disney is the variety that is seen. there are the merfolk of atlantica, the mermaids of whitecap bay and the mermaids of neverland. each have slightly different histories, reputations and personalities. the merfolk of atlantica are thought to be the most benevolent of their kind. they avoid humans for the most part, and enjoy their peaceful life underwater. the kingdom of atlantica is the biggest kingdom of the seas and thus king triton is revered as ruler of the seven seas. conflict is avoided in atlantica, but is expected with such power over the oceanic kingdoms. the mermaids of neverland are known for their apathy. placing them on a moral compass results in them falling right in the middle. of the merfolk, they are not the most feared, but humans are wary around them. they are the most open to interacting with other species due to their exposure to various types in neverland. of the three, the mermaids of whitecap bay are by far the most feared. they are known for guarding the waters of whitecap bay by all means. they are often hunted because their tears are said to grant immortality. for this reason there are many tales of sailors and pirates alike going missing during explorations of the bay.

although not merfolk, another notable civilization of the seven seas is the lost city of atlantis. despite coming above water in recent history, the civilization is considered another underwater kingdom. and of all the kingdoms, they are the most technologically advanced. they are a powerful kingdom, but very peace loving as well. for this reason, they have strong ties and relations with atlantica.

lastly, in comparison to the mermaids there do exist sirens as well. however, the sirens are a species of their own. following various mythology, sirens can be confused with the mermaids. however, there are differences. there are three types of sirens. the winged sirens, the sea serpent/snake sirens, and the ones that appear like human women altogether. sea sirens are often mistaken as mermaids, but they are not. they are much more malevolent and feed on humans.
