Rotifers
Rotifers are tiny multicellular organisms found commonly in freshwater environments around the world. They are largely considered to be the smallest animals on Earth, composed of over 1,000 cells complete with a full digestive system and jaws but only reaching the size of a microscopic amoeba. They can be found in the most extreme environments, including the Mojave Desert where they enter dormancy when their habitats dry up. Scientists in Antarctica have recently discovered single cell organisms existing deep below ice sheets, but they’re looking even harden to see if more complex creatures like rotifers have been able to survive without sunlight in sub-zero temperatures for nearly a million years.

We have always liked those others
the ways they move
birds holding the air
for dear life
fish screwing the water
for dear life
animals sniffing the earth
for dear life
it's all so simple
we say
how they take
what is there
or each other
how they know
who to take
who will take them
but what's the tune
they dance to? every step is a sure one
every turn undisputed
though it ends
in the rhythm of jaws
We always liked them
those others
whose singing is beyond
our throats
—George Economou, “Those Others,” from Landed Natures, 1969

Hiroshi Egami, The Black Earth
In the world of water, everything is enlarged and distorted. Human beings were born there, though they cannot enter there. Supposing that water is truth, I wonder if people living in this world are distorted, transformed beings.
