totally winged this fucking garbage i hate it

“i didn’t save you” celes says, her face buried between terra’s shoulderblades, green hair tickling her face even when it was secured in a bun. she only finds the courage to speak the words because darkness obscured her.

“what?” terra whispers back, tilting her head to acknowledge that she listened but without turning over. celes was secretly glad. she feared what she might see in terra’s eyes. judgement? anger? realization, that she slept next to a traitor not only to the empire, but to her?

“when you were...imprisoned.” when you were being tortured as just a little girl.

“when i was a slave.” terra adds gravely with her voice barely above a whisper.

“when you were a slave,” celes repeats back, willing her voice not to break, not now, “i didn’t rescue you. i knew, but i did nothing.” but willing only did so much; and she shifts slightly away from terra to ensure that her hot tears don’t stain terra’s night shirt. if there was one thing she knew how to do, it was cry in silence. wailing didn’t pass in a bunk with two other soldiers.

there is more silence, then, and the darkness in the room becomes oppressive more than concealing. celes can feel terra’s breathing beneath her lazily draped arm still, steady, unlike her own, with only the slightest hitch to tell you she had been reminded of darker times.

“what could you have done?” terra asks and finally rolls over to look celes in the eyes. celes prayed that terra couldnt see the redness ringing them. she could barely see terra’s icy blue eyes, but the faint moonlight coming in through cracks in the blinds lit them just enough that she knew they were open, and watching.

“i...don’t know.” celes had been as young as terra, and only slightly less afraid. while she may have had cid’s love, she had expectations from everyone else. “nothing, perhaps. but i could have tried.”

“celes,” terra reaches to grasp celes’s hand, gripping tightly. “if you..had tried, you would be dead right now. if..if you were dead..i would be also.” she managed to say, but it was obvious the conversation had begun to weigh on her. she gripped celes’s hand until her knuckles were white, like celes actually not being here was a real possibility, and the specter she held could disappear any second. celes heard terra’s breaths start to shake

“terra..i’m sorry.” celes whispered and tried to free her hand to hug terra, but she was being held in a vice grip. she allowed terra to dig crescents into her hand. this had been a mistake, what should have been apology had made things worse for the both of them. 

“don’t apologize. please don’t apologize. i...” terra took a few deep breaths, slowing the pattern down, “i never blamed you. not when we were little, and not now. don’t apologize, just be here.”
