From Home

Right now, I’m stressing.

I’m sitting at my laptop, From Home by NCT U is playing in my headphones and I’m doing everything I can not to sob. I know that my sister and my roommates will be able to hear me if I let out all the feelings that I’ve been keeping in. 

My mom just got out of the hospital after having a major stroke, I moved in with her to be her caretaker. Taking a leave from my job to be her support system, but, not only two days of living with her did we have to leave because my father wasn’t paying our electric bill. Spending the designated money on alcohol instead. Now we are essentially homeless until we can come up with $3000 to get the power turned back on.

My mother, not wanting to deal with my father and his abuse anymore, has finally decided to leave him. But, not until she gets all of the bill caught up so she doesn’t leave him high and dry, even though he would never do that for her. She’s sacrificing her own health, and safety, to help a man that stopped caring about her years ago.

But that’s just who she is as a person, a person who cares about everyone, without a second thought to her own wellbeing. My sister, who is cognitively impaired. doesn’t understand what’s going on and is sad about our mom leaving her stepfather. I can understand why, her own father not caring about her, he’s been the only man in her life. But, she understands that this is what’s best for everyone. 

I am the one who has to help make these decisions, but I don’t know how to do it anymore. I can’t take it, it’s too hard. But I will continue to do it, because my mom will not be able to survive without me. A few months ago, she suffered the trauma and losing my older brother. Three weeks ago, she suffered the trauma of a severe stroke, and now, the trauma and leaving her husband, my father.

Without me, my mother would probably give up. She’s now unable to work, unable to drive, unable to do most things on her own. She needs someone, all of my older siblings has given me this job. Even though I am only twenty-one and the youngest of all my siblings. I now have the responsibility of taking care of my mother, impaired sister, and all of the house responsibilities.

I may have to fully quit my job, which saddens me, as I love everyone that I work with. They’ve been so supportive of me, and my manager has slowly become my best friends. So many times did she drive me to the hospital to see my mom, without asking for anything in return. So many times did she text me and ask me if I was okay. Randomly bringing me coffee at times she thought I was about to break.

I can’t ask her for anything else. I’m falling behind on everything, my dreams of going to college are gone. My book writing has stopped, my urge to do anything has disappeared. No longer do I like to do any of the things that brought joy to my life. I no longer have any time to take care of myself, but I will continue to take care of my mother, and my sister, because they need me.

Without me, they would surely, fall apart.

~Can You Promise?~ Part 2

"You have everything you need right? You didn't forget anything?" My mom asked as she looked me over once more. I laughed and looked at her.

"Yes mom, I have everything. I'm not moving that far away, I'll be able to come by when I miss you."

"Yah, who's worried about you missing us and you dropping by out of nowhere. You're no longer my burden. No hurry up, everyone is waiting for you." She hugged me quickly one last time before rushing back into the house.

"Don't mind your mother, she's just going to miss you." Dad said hugging me.

"I know. I love you dad." I said. He sniffled slightly and patted my back.

"I love you too, now go, don't keep your friends waiting." I kissed his forehead before jogging over to the car where everyone was waiting.

"It's about time you get here. Come on, let's go, your new life awaits." Chun-Hei said. I rolled my eyes as I opened up the passenger's seat to her car.

Once I buckled up I looked in the backseat where Jinyoung, Min-hyuk, and Jimmy were squished together. I laughed and winked at the three of them.

"Well, it's good to know that nothing's changed since high school."

"Hurry up and drive before I kill these idiots." Min-hyuk muttered.

"Aw, come on Hyukie, don't be so grumpy." I said. He just rolled his eyes and continued to grumble to himself.

He really doesn't mind helping, he just got hurt into a fight yesterday so he was in a little bit of pain. I don't him that he didn't have to, but he's also very stubborn. He'll help even if I tell him to stay home and rest.

Finally, after what felt like a very long car ride filled with silence, we pulled up the address. But, it wasn't an apartment building, it was just a large driveway that led up to a metal gate.

"Uh, Jinne, are you sure this is the right place?" Chun-Hei asked as she looked over at me.

"Um, hang on let me look." I pulled out my phone and my head tilted curiously from the side when I got a text message from Kim Hyo-Joo.

'When you get to the gate just tell them your name' I looked over at Chun-Hei.

"Pull up to the gate." I said. She nodded and drove the car up to the gate. She rolled down her window and leaned back slightly so the man sitting there could see me.

He walked up to the door and looked out at us.

"Can I help you ladies?" He asked.

"Hi um, my name is Bae Jin-Hee." I said. He grabbed his walkie-talkie that was strapped to his chest and spoke quietly into it.

He nodded and looked back at us. He nodded his head toward that large gate. It hissed slightly as it began to open.

"Go right on in. Miss. Kim is waiting or you." I thanked him and looked back at Chun-Hei.

"Should we go in?" I asked.

"Well, your name just opened up that gate, so, let's go on an adventure." She smirked and continued to drive.

The driveway was long and filled with many different trees. Jimmy gasped and rolled down his window.

"Wah, look at this place!" He exclaimed.

"Where did you agree to live Jinnie?" Jinyoung asked me.

"I have no idea." My eyes widened when the house came into view. This was not an apartment complex, this was a mansion.

It was about the size of an apartment complex. Large white marble stairs led up the house, I took a closer look and noticed Ms. Kim Hyo-Joo standing there, another man next to her.

I cautiously opened the door and stepped onto the concrete. She smiled and waved me up the steps.

"Welcome Jin-Hee, I'm glad you made it here safely." She greeted.

"Hi, um, where are we? This isn't what I expected." I said. She laughed and ran a hand through her hair.

"Right, this is the part I wanted to keep a secret until you got here. So this it the house, please come inside and look around." She turned on her heel and walked into the house.

I looked back at my friends and shrugged my shoulders nodding my head towards the door. Chun-Hei was by my side in an instant, waking next to me and looking around. I let out a gasp as I looked around the room, this house is beautiful.

"Wah, did you win the lottery or something Jinnie?" She whispered in my ear. I looked back at her.

"I have no idea, this is not at all what I expected."

"All right, your room is on the second floor, last door on your left. I made them give you the biggest room. The kitchen is here and the living room is through that door. We've provided everything for you and you can pay what you can afford for rent. Though, I'm not too worried about it. Now, about your roommates, they're usually out of the house, doing their own things. But, they tend to hang out together, don't be too intimated by them because they're so close."

"They should be home by dinner, we have workers that come in every day to clean and cook. So you don't have to worry about anything. If you have any requests or problems, this is Tan Yong-Sik, he is one of my most trusted employees and I assigned him to your care."

She looked down at her watch and sighed, she turned to the man next to her and whispered in his ear. He nodded and stood straight up, speaking into the small microphone strapped to his suit jacket.

"I have to go, now, your friends may stay as long as they like. If you need any help just tell Yong-Sik and he'll be of assistance." She said goodbye before walking out of the room, another group of men following after her.

"Now, if you'd like to explore the house, I have people bringing your things into the house." Yong-Sik said turning to us.

"Oh, all right, um do you all want to go upstairs?" I asked.

"Duh, let's go!" Chun-Hei exclaimed. She took my hand and began to drag me towards the stairs.

"Chun-Hei, slow down." I said laughing slightly. I turned to ask the boys if they were coming with us when I heard loud laughing.

I turned back around and bumped into something hard. The laughing stopped and I tilted my head upwards, my eyes met the face of the person standing in front of me. He looked down at me a look of confusion on his face. In an instant, I was pulled away from the boy and Min-Hyuk was in front of me, shielding my body with his.

"What are you doing here?" He hissed at the boy in front of me. I peeked over Min-Hyuk's shoulder and looked at the boy he was staring at.

He was just a little bit taller then Min-Hyuk. His hair was brown and his bangs fell over his eyebrow. He had a cold hard look on his face as he stared at Min-Hyuk.

"Funny, I thought that I was the one who should ask you that. Why are you in my house?" He spat.

My eyes widened and I pushed Min-Hyuk out of the way and stood in front of him.

"Your house? You're kidding right?" I asked. He looked down at me and raised his eyebrow.

"Yeah, this is our house, now who are you?" He asked.

"Yah, Hyung, there's an easier way to ask." The boy standing next to him gently moved him out of the way.

He had pastel blue hair that covered most of his forehead in little wisps. He had a big smile on his face as he waved at us.

"Hi,  my name is Kim Seunghun, that's Yonghee, Hyunsuk and the really grumpy guy is Byounggon, but everyone calls him BX. My mom said that we had a new roommate coming to live with us. Is that one of you?" He asked looking at all of us.

"Uh, that would be me." I said slowly raising my hand. Seunghun looked down at me and gave me a weird look

"You? Really?" He looked over at Yong-Sik who appeared next to me.

"That is correct sir. You may call your mother to confirm if you'd like." Seunghun just smiled and shook his head.

"No that's all right."

"Well, then, this is Bae Jin-Hee, and she'll be joining you all in the CIX house."

"Come on Chun-Hei, can't I just move in with you?" I begged.

"As much as I would love to, I already have an idiot brother and a Jimmy living with me. So like, no." I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh.

"I'm just nervous, now I have to meet with the woman who owns the apartment."

"Where are you meeting her?" She asked.

"At the cafe, I figured it would make me feel better to meet somewhere I'm comfortable." I said.

"That's smart, no Jimmy, you can't go with her to her interview. I'll call you later Jinnie, call me when you've finished." I said goodbye and hung up the phone, slipping it into my back pocket.

I nervously played with the hem of my shirt as I opened the door to the cafe that I've come to call a second home. I skipped over to the counter and smiled up at Mi-Sun.

"Ah Jin-Hee, are you here for your interview?" She asked. I let out a sigh before nodding.

"Yes, and I'm really nervous. I need this apartment, but what if she doesn't like me? I don't want to have to live with Jinyoung for the rest of my life." I whined.

Minmin laughed as she placed and Iced Coffee on the counter in front of me. She leaned forward and rested her elbows on the counter.

"Don't worry, you'll do great." She assured me. I smiled as she ruffled my hair slightly.

"Thanks, Unnie, I'm going to sit down." I grabbed my coffee and moved over to the booth by the door.

I lifted my cup ad put the straw in my mouth, taking a sip. I can't believe that I finally get to start college. After everything that happened, I never thought that I would make it to this point. Jinyoung has tried everything he can to help me, my entire family has.

But, I think now I'm ready to try and do it on my own. So that's why I figured it was time to move into the apartment. It's close to the college and close to the cafe. And Mi-Sun is understanding enough to work around my college hours.

I really hope that this all works, I don't want to have to depend on my family again I've done that enough in this life. I heard the door chime as it opened, someone just came inside.

It was an older woman, her elegance was unmatched. Her long black hair flowed naturally down her back and bounced as she walked. A long brown coat covered most of her body and you could see the bottom hem of her black dress. Black heels clicked on the floor as she walked up to the counter.

"Excuse me, you wouldn't happen to know a Bae Jin-Hee, would you?" She asked Mi-Sun. She peeked over at me and nodded.

"Hi, you must be Kim Hyo-Joo. My name is Bae Jin-Hee." I greeted bowing slightly. She smiled and walked over to me.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you. You're so much prettier then I imagined." I blushed slightly at her comment.

She was beautiful, it was hard for me to believe that she wasn't thirty. Light, natural makeup highlighted her natural features. Her eyes were a deep brown color and crinkled at the sides as she smiled.

"Thank you, uh, please, sit. Would you like anything to drink?" I asked.

"No that is quite all right. I would just like to get to know you better." I nodded and awkwardly sat across from her.

"So tell me, do you have a job?" She asked.

"Yes uh, I actually work here." She laughed softly.

"I see, so that is why you asked to meet here. This place is cute, it suites you. And you are planning on attending the University of Yeongu. I am getting a major in English with a minor in photography."

"That is quite amazing. Now, this place that I am offering, four people already live there. My own child being one of them, you rent wouldn't be too expensive, I understand that you work hard and with being in college you won't be able to work many hours. Everything will be provided for you, except for your personal needs. And you would be able to move in as soon as it is convenient for you. Do you have any questions about anything?" She asked.

"Um, a few. If four people already live in the apartment, why do you need someone else?" I asked.

"Well, those kids tend to get a little hot-headed. It almost feels like I'm raising children all over again. It would be nice to have someone like you move in. And I know that it's hard to find a place where you can stay. Especially on such short notice." She explained.

"The ones that already live there, do they go to college?"

"Yes, three of them actually attend the same college as you, and the youngest still attends high school."

"Ah, I, I don't think I have anything else." I said.

"Perfect, you still have my number, so I will call you once everything is ready. Do you need help moving your things?" She asked as she stood up.

"No, I shouldn't have any problems." I said. I quickly stood up and bowed again. "Thank you."

"Of course dear, we will be in contact soon." She spun around and exited the shop before I could even say anything else.

I was still a little confused about what just happened I stood up and walked over to MInmin. She laughed and she leaned over the counter.

"So, that was easy." She said.

"Right? I feel like it was a little too easy." I mumbled.

"Who cares, you got the room. You should go home now and celebrate." She quickly ushered the out of the building.

I couldn't help but smile as I began my trek home. I can't believe that actually agreed to let me move in. But, moving in with four other girls, is that really a good idea? I hope they're nice. She said that one of them was her daughter, and that three of them attend the same school as I do.

This could be fairly interesting. I turned onto my road and skipped down the rest of the street. I opened the front door and cheered loudly.

"I'm home!" I slipped off my shoes and put my slippers on my feet.

I went into the kitchen where my mother was working on dinner.

"There you are dear, so tell me, how did it go?" She asked turning to me. I smiled and jumped up so I was sitting on the counter.

"It went great. She said I could move in as soon as possible. But, there was something strange about her."

"What do you mean?" She asked handing me an apple.

"Well, she said that four people already live in the apartment, and one of them is her daughter. And three of them are attending the same school as me."

"Hmm, if four people already live in the apartment why would they need one more person?" She asked. I shrugged my shoulders.

"That was my same thought. But, it's a nice place and it's close to school. It won't be so bad. I just hope the girls are nice." I mumbled taking a bite of my apple.

"I'm sure they are. Now, go finish packing. Your brother can help you move the big stuff. Call Min-Hyuk and Jimmy, ask them if they can help." I nodded and leaned over, placing a chaste kiss on her cheek.

"I will, I love you." I ran to my bedroom and stood in the center of the room, looking around.

"Hmm, how am I going to do this?" I asked myself.

I opened my closet and began to take everything off of the hangers. I placed them on my bed and began to fold them up.

"Hey, mom told me you got the place, congrats." I looked up when I heard my brother's voice.

Jinyoung stood in the doorway of my room, leaning against the frame. His arms were crossed over his chest and he smiled at me.

"Yeah, I'm moving in the day after tomorrow. You don't mind helping me do you?" I asked. He chuckled and walked into the room.

"Of course I will, have you called the other two losers yet?" He asked. I shook my head and stood up.

"Not yet, I was going to do that tonight. You don't think they would mind do you?" He scoffed and mumbled something under his breath.

"What did you say?" I asked. He chuckled and ruffled my hair.

"Nothing. I don't think they would mind helping. Especially Min-Hyuk, not like he has anything better to do." He chuckled as he walked out of the room

I looked after him confused. What does that mean? I didn't have time to think about it when my phone began ringing. I pulled it out of m pocket and smiled when I saw Jimmy's name.

"Jimjim, I was just about to all Min-Hyuk." I laughed.

"Yeah, well I'm more important. So, how did the interview go?" He asked.

"Good, I got the place and am moving in the day after tomorrow. Do you think you and Min-Hyuk can help me move in?" I asked sweetly.

"Of course I'll help! I don't know about grouchy pants over there he's being lame."

"Is he now? Am I gonna have to come over and sit on him again?" I asked.

"Do it and I'll kill you." I heard him call.

"Bring it on loser." I laughed. I couldn't see him, but I could tell that he was rolling his eyes.

"We'll be over to help you, don't mind him" Jimmy laughed.

"I'll buy dinner for you guys helping me."

"Free food? I'm in!" Chun-Hei shouted.

"You would be involved if there's food." That's my best friend. One hundred percent food motivated.

"I really appreciate you guys. Thank you for helping me."

"Of course, you know we'll always be here for you." Jimmy said

"Now hang up so she can finish packing." I hard Min-Hyuk snap.

"Jeez you old man, quit being grumpy." Everyone said goodbye and tossed the phone onto my bed.

I turned back around and looked around. Well, it's finally time to start life on my own. And I'm really excited.

Stressed. That was the only word I can use to describe what I was feeling right now. I'm over these exams, over people in my school thinking that their better then everyone else. Over these dance lessons, and all I want to do know, was see the one person I can't.

"You're all dismissed." I stood on my feet and grabbed my papers that were sitting on my desk.

"_____, come on, let's go have dinner. I'm hungry." I laughed as my best friend attached herself to my arm.

"I'm not hungry, I really just want to take a nap." I mumbled. She sighed and together we began to walk out of the classroom.

We walked to our lockers and I opened it, putting all the things from today inside.

"Guys! Exams are over! We can finally breath peacefully." Yoo-Min exclaimed as he ran over to us.

"All I want to do is sleep." My two friends laughed and we all followed the crowd of exhausted students.

My two friends continued talking to each other while I zoned out, staring at the cloudy sky in front of me. Well, at least the weather is feeling the same way I am. A nudge on my arm made me look over.

"You better hurry before one of the other girls claim him." I followed her gaze and once my eyes landed on the target, a smile grew on my face.

He's here. An umbrella shielded most of his body, but I knew, that it was him. He would occasionally turn around and look at the people walking by. Other girls would stop around him and gush slightly as they stared at him.

No one knows. This is the first time he's ever showed up to pick me up. Practice must have ended early. Or he must have begged to be let out early, did he remember that today was my last exam? Tightening my grip on my bag, and slowly quickened my pace.

When I reached him, I stuck out my arm and tapped his shoulder. All the girls stopped talking and they looked over at us.

"Did she actually do that? She knows who that is right?"

He turned around and smiled at me. He let out a sigh and dropped his umbrella. He stepped closer to me and wrapped his arms around my body. He pulled me into his chest and cradled me closely. He brought his hand up and cupped the back of my neck, holding my head against his chest.

My arms slithered around his waist and I giggled slightly. The mood I was in, suddenly disappeared and was replaced with pure happiness. I moved my head and peeked up at him, smiling as he stared down at me.

"I missed you." He whispered. Delicately he moved strands of hair away from my face.

"I missed you too." I said. He kissed my nose gently and slipped my bag off my shoulders.

"Come on, let's go home." I nodded and picked up the umbrella that he recently dropped. Taking my hand in his, the two of us began to walk to his dorm.

"So, how did you manage to get here?" I asked.

"Well, I remembered that today was your last exam, and Hoyoung managed to convince our manager to let me pick you up." He said. I laughed and rested my head on his shoulder.

"Well, remind me to thank him the next time I see him."

We walked the rest of the way in a comfortable silence. We made our way up the steps to the dorm and opened the door. I slipped my shoes off of my feet and put on the duck slippers that Kangmin keeps for me.

"Here, give me your bag and go change into something else. The hoodies on the bed." I smiled and nodded.

I turned the corner and walked into the room that he shared with his members. I opened up his closet and pulled out a pair of black sweatpants and a tank top. I quickly changed and skipped over to his bed picking up the hoodie that was laid out on top.

I picked up the soft fabric and slipped it on over my head. Once I was dressed I walked back out into the living room. I was surprised to see a mountain of blankets and pillows thrown onto the couch.

The menu of Finding Nemo on the screen. Various snacks shrewn about that table I looked around but Kangmin was no where around.

"Uh, Kangmin." I called.

He walked back in holding a pizza box with various other boxes laid on top. A bag with drinks dangled from his arm.

"What are you doing?" I asked raising my eyebrow.

"Well, I figured you'd need to unwind after weeks of exams, so I thought I'd make you feel better." I giggled and nodded.

"Here, let me help you." I walked over to him and grabbed the top boxes on the stack. We set then on the table and Kangmin began lay out the blankets on the couch. Once everything was ready, I sat down criss cross next to him and we began to eat.

"Where are the boys?" I asked with a mouth full of chiken.

"You're so elegant. They went out, I don't know where but they said they wouldn't be back until late." He said shrugging his shoulders.

I laughed and turned my attention back to the tv in front of me. Once I was finished eating, I felt my body grow tired. Kangmin seemed to notice that I was getting tired, he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled my into his chest.

He wrapped the blankets around me and helped make me more comfortable. I stared out the window as the rain pattered slightly against the window. The simple sound making me even sleepier.

"Here, go to sleep. We can finished the movie later." He whispered.

I looked up at him and placed a soft lazy kiss on his chin. He laughed and nudged my nose with his.

"I love you Kangmin." I whispered.

"I love you too. Now go to sleep, okay?" I nodded and rested against him.

The room was quiet with only the muffled sounds of the tv to be heard.

"Kangmin?"

"Hmm?"

"Can you sing me to sleep?"

"Yeah, what do you want to here?" He asked after a few seconds of silence.

"Surprise me."

Softly, his voice filled my ears and a large smile grew on my face. I curled closer into his body and rested my head on his shoulder, nestling into his neck. With his quiet voice, sleep didn't take long to take over my body.
