The drama has done an amazing job in portraying the final scene between Tharn and Type at the end of the first episode. It doesn’t romanticize the encounter, in fact, it presents it as realistically and objectively as possible, using an almost documentary style of camera in order to give an unbiased view of the events, leaving the audience to draw their own conclusion. To achieve this, the director not only uses close-ups but employs natural sounds to heighten the perception of the experience and make it feel authentic. In most Asian dramas, these natural sounds are muted or drowned out by OST music and that’s a huge mistake because sounds are imporant; sounds add another layer and complexity to the events. You can hear the rustle of Tharn’s shirt and hair when Type touches them, the sounds of the mattress, of Tharn’s fingers and lips on Type’s body and, more imporantly, his moans and heavy breathing. It makes you realize that while Tharn might have started to kiss Type for revenge, as the immediate result of Type inviting his friends to their room, he gets carried away, slightly loses grip on his control and actually becomes aroused, spurred by Type’s unwitting touches. Moreover, it’s clear that Tharn’s initial intention was to give Type only a few hickeys on the neck and chest; however, after he gets carried away he can’t help himself and sprinkle more kisses on Type’s eyes, face and lips.

Further extra layer is provided by the instrumental music which hints that whatever is happening on screen isn’t right. Most dramas would completely destroy the complex atmosphere with a sung OST track but here the music director opts for a dramatic instrumental piece in a minor scale which indicates negative emotions and dark themes.

All these creative means are crucial in properly conveying the profound complexity and ambiguity of this scene. There is something undeniably sensual about that scene, just as there is something negative and blurred. It’s meant to give the audience mixed feelings, it’s supposed to make them feel uncomfortable, it’s supposed to make them think.

What sets TharnType The Series from other Thai BL dramas is it’s willingness to address these uncomfortable and negative aspects of relationships, be it Tharn kissing Type without his permission or Type’s hateful harrassment of him. Portraying them doesn’t diminish the quality of the drama, on the contrary, it elevates it above the rest of the genre.

There has been some criticism about the final scene of the first episode of TharnType The Series where Tharn kisses Type in his drunken state with people arguing that he’s committed an unforgivable transgression and that the drama is romanticizing a non-consensual physical act. From what I see it’s a very small but loud minority because most people on Twitter, Instagram and Mydramalist are in love with the show. There are several problems with these arguments.

First is that they take Tharn’s kisses as an isolated incident without taking into account any context and circumstances leading up to it, claiming that whatever Type did to him previously is irrelevant in regard to Tharn’s kissing him. And that is so wrong because if Type didn’t bully and provoke him, Tharn would have never done something like that.

Second problem, and perhaps most glaring and telling, is that while there is some harsh backlash of Tharn’s actions barely anyone condemns Type’s treatment of his roommate. Why? Because Type has heartwrenching trauma and fear, whch stems from a tragic experience driving, his actions? Yes, he has a serious reason, which definitely counts as a mitigating circumstance, but doesn’t excuse him of harrassing an innocent person who has never hurt him and always treated him with every respect he deserved. In this case, Tharn is the victim suffering for something he didn’t do. Most of the negative comments I read bash Tharn for kissing Type without his consent; however, ironically, no one mentions the lack of Tharn’s consent when Type bullied and harrassed him, destroying his precious possessions, called him deragatory, vulgar and demeaning names, disrupted his life, never leaving him in peace… - those are all the definitions of a hate crime. And judging from the preview, Type isn’t going to stop, demeaning Tharn’s parent and actually physically assaulting him. So whose offense has been objectively more serious? Type’s stolen kisses or actual hate crime and offense against basic human rights? The latter would be subjected to criminal proceedings in court while very few lawyers would dare to go to court over few stolen kisses. Criticizing one wrongdoing and disregarding the bigger problem and taking it completely out of context show huge double standards and a very narrow-minded POV.

I also read arguments saying that the kiss was stupid of Tharn since he knew Type hated gays and something like that would not improve ths situation. The thing is that at this point Tharn isn’t doing it because he wants to make Type to like him or make him less angry, he only wants to give him a hickey to mess with him for all the bullying. Moreover, when he kisses Type he doesn’t know the reason for his aversion towards gay people because if he did, it’s obviously he would have never chosen a hickey as a payback method and opted for something else. People are so fixated on those few stolen kisses that they completely forget all the other things Tharn did and the things he didn’t do; they forget that he too has been suffering since the moment Type started his bigotic campaign against him. What’s important to realize is that Tharn only retaliates when Type harresses him and he constantly makes attempts to make up with Type, always ready to forgive him and that really shows his true quality and how mature he is. He could have done much worse. He even has tangible proof and witnesses and could easily drive Type not only out of dormitories but also get him kicked out of school, yet he only repays Type using the same measures and it’s only right as he is standing up for himself since giving up would mean admiting he’s done something wrong and denying who he is. It’s only natural for Tharn to feel wronged and after weeks of constant harressment and neverending torment it’s only natural he finally snaps because a person can only take so much mistreament before he’s had enough.

Tharn and Type are hurting each other and there is a huge conflict between them, with a misunderstanding and emotional baggage at the center of it. They are not perfect, they both make mistakes and that what makes them human because real people and their relationships are flawed, imperfect, messy and problematic with many misunderstandings. However, they can also admit to their mistakes, learn from them, apologize and forgive each other. You can imagine a person reacting in real life like Type did and you can also see another person react like Tharn if treated the same way because even the most patient and tolerant people have their limits. Yet, neither of them did something truly unforgivable, moreover forgiveness is not an equal exchange or something you receive only when you deserve it. Just look how Tharn is always ready to forgive Type for his mistreament of him.

Some people are judging the characters by some impossible standards of human perfection that doesn’t even exist in the real world. The characters and relationships in TharnType The Series are not picture-perfect, just like they are not in the real world. If people want picture-perfect and “unproblematic” faves then perhaps watching another drama, like 2Moons2 or The Theory of Love, would be a better option for them.
