Day 7: Free for all
Fic excerpt from the Heartsteel universe (also Riot Music AU)! This one is a little longer than the others. It's also not edited very much so forgive any mistakes. Hope you enjoy!
Yone prowls around the lobby, keeping a keen eye on the front desk while trying to make it seem like he’s not stalking the front desk. At this time of night, there’s no one in the lobby other than the attendant, and Yone, desperately trying to look natural.
He has no idea how he’s supposed to do this. If only they would just leave the desk unattended he could maybe pull this off, but that’s not likely.
He’s considering starting a small fire to get to the attendant to move, when a voice comes from behind him.
“Hey sunshine.”
Yone jumps and turns to see K’Sante standing right behind him.
K’Sante gives him a lopsided smile with a curious raised brow. “There a reason you’re down here in the middle of the night, trying to glare a hole in the attendant’s head?”
Yone feels himself furiously flush, having been caught in this foolishness. However, this might present an opportunity. A slim opportunity, but it’s the best he’s got right now.
Yone looks around to ensure there’s no one else in earshot and quietly whispers to K’Sante. “I need you to do something for me.”
K’Sante grins. “Anything for you, just say the word.”
Yone resists the urge to swoon at K’Sante’s words. He’s probably exaggerating. He’s about to test that right now.
“I need you to distract the attendant. Get them away from the front desk, just for a few minutes.”
K’Sante’s look shifts to mild concern, with the raised eyebrow coming back. “You gonna tell me why?”
Yone gives a mild grimace. “Probably not.”
K’Sante gives a little laugh. “Well, I won’t let anyone say I’m not a man of my word. Luckily for you, I’ve got just the thing.”
With that, K’Sante casually struts over to the front desk. Yone just watches him go, baffled. He can’t believe he actually agreed to this.
Yone moves as casually as he can within earshot just in time to hear K’Sante tell the attendant that one of the exercise machines is malfunctioning.
“It’s a little difficult to explain. It’d be easier if I just showed you.”
The attendant sighs. “Alright, let’s go take a look.”
And with that, the two of them walk off towards the exercise room. Yone blinks as he watches them go.
Shaking himself out of his stupor, he gets to work. He casually slides behind the desk and wakes up the computer. The attendant is still logged in. Perfect.
He quickly looks up the name he’s after and finds his room reservation, and quickly makes a copy of the key. Then he navigates back to where it was before he touched it and quickly moves out behind the counter.
By the time K’Sante and the attendant return, Yone is back to innocently loitering in the lobby.
“I’ll have maintenance get on it in the morning. I’ll let them know what you said about it, it’ll probably be helpful for them to know.”
“No problem,” K’Sante says, giving them an easy smile. “I know a thing or two about exercise machines.”
The attendant briefly looks K’Sante up and down. “I bet.” Then they head back towards the counter.
K’Sante stops next to Yone. “So? Get what you needed?”
Yone nods, holding up the key.
“So… you gonna tell me what that’s for…?”
Yone is silent for a moment. “Probably not.”
Yone swiftly turns around heading towards the elevator. Footsteps behind him announce that K’Sante is following him.
“You don’t need to follow me. I have it from here.”
“Considering I just enabled you to do whatever shady thing you’re about to do, I feel it’s my responsibility to at least come with you and make sure you don’t do anything too crazy.”
Yone grimaces. Unfortunately, he can’t find it in him to deny the man.
“...Fine.”
“Great.” Yone can hear the grin in K’Sante’s voice.
Together they board the elevator, and Yone hits the floor button. K’Sante raises an eyebrow but stays silent.
“So…” Yone starts. “Malfunctioning exercise machine?”
K’Sante laughs. “Don’t worry I didn’t break anything. I noticed that machine was a little wonky yesterday. I’ve been meaning to tell the staff but I kept forgetting. You’re requested reminded me of it.” He scratches the back of his head. “Honestly, I probably didn’t need to pull them away from the desk to show them, but it was easy enough to make it sound like I did.”
Yone nods. “I see.”
They lapse into silence until the elevator comes to a stop and the doors open. Briefly glancing at the guide plaque, Yone makes towards the room he’s after, K’Sante faithfully walking behind him. When they reach the door, Yone takes a deep breath. He hopes he’s asleep. It’ll be easier if he is.
Yone holds the key in front of the sensor till it beeps, then quietly pushes open the door. Walking quietly as he can, he slinks into the dark room.
Yone feels a tap on his shoulder and turns around to see K’Sante besides him.
K’Sante points down at a pair of shoes haphazardly discarded in the entryway, then signs, Is this Ekko’s room?
Yone signs back. You could tell by his shoes?
He has very unique shoes. Very stylish.
Yone rolls his eyes. Yes, this is Ekko’s room.
Why are we in Ekko’s room?
Yone hesitates. This far in, there’s little point in hiding it. But now isn’t the time. I’ll tell you later.I’ll hold you to that.I know.Turning away from K’Sante, Yone walks further into the room until he can see the outline of the bed, and the figure sleeping in it. Yone takes a deep breath, and slowly lets it out as he feels the mask materialize. As it covers his eyes, it alters his vision to allow him to see the creature crouching over Ekko’s form.
It’s monstrous, with too large claws and teeth, and long swirling fur, with its face covered by a mask. It looks like a demonic wolf, with long ears. A jackal maybe, Yone guesses. Not that it matters.
The demon pays no mind to K’Sante and Yone, seemingly only focused on its prey, crouched over him and drooling, no doubt using it’s magic to alter Ekko’s dreams to grow his regret. Yone can hear it laughing.
Yone doesn’t know what Ekko’s regrets are. It’s none of his business. He’s only here to do one thing.
Yone takes a seat against the wall, he feels and hears K’Sante join him on the floor, but he pays him no mind.
Taking another deep breath in, and letting it out, he allows his power to separate from his body, and he stands, leaving his body on the floor next to K’Sante.
Now the demon takes notice of him.
It tilts its head, as though sizing him up. It clearly doesn’t think he’s a threat. Not yet at least.
Yone wills his blades to form in his hand. The beast tenses up and growls. It shrinks itself down, and Yone prepares himself.
It pounces.
Yone manages to deflect away its claws with one blade and takes a slice at it with the other, but it bounces back away from him.
Yone advances. The bed and the rest of the room fade away, it’s just Yone and this beast. They dance back and forth, trading attempted blows, but they’re both to fast and nimble for either of them to land a significant blow.
But Yone is faster. And he’s going to prove it to this demon.
As the jackal tries to dodge out of the way, Yone thrusts one of his swords through its leg, pinning it to the ground. With the other sword, Yone stabs into the beast’s chest. As the demon’s form cracks and fades, Yone sees glimpses. Memories that plague its prey with the regret it was feeding on. Normally these glimpses mean nothing to Yone, but Ekko is someone he knows.
It’s hard to make out the visions, but Yone sees a little girl with blue hair, that grows into a woman with long blue braids.
Jinx?
As the demon finally dies, Yone tries to shake the visions out of his head. Whatever Ekko’s history with Jinx, whatever his regret is, it’s none of his business.
Yone lets out the breath he was holding and lets his swords dematerialize. Then he lets his spirit fade back into his body.
When he comes back to himself, he feels a slight pressure on his hand. He looks at it to see a large dark hand over it. He looks up at K’Sante.
Seemingly noticing what Yone was wondering about, K’Sante quickly removes his hand. Sorry. It’s just.. when I touched you, I could see what was happening.
Yone blinks in surprise. He could see it? All of it? Yone didn’t know that could happen. But that’s not important now.
We should go.
K’Sante nods at him, and helps Yone up as they both rise. Together they silently move out of the room.
Once they’re in the hall, K’Sante looks over at Yone.
“So, what was all that? That thing you fought?”
So he could see it all. Interesting.
They move back towards the elevator as Yone speaks. “A demon.”
“A demon? I mean it certainly looked pretty demonic. We talking like Rhaast kind of demon?”
Yone shakes his head. “I don’t know what kind of demon Rhaast is, but he’s not one of these. That demon is called an azakana. They attach themselves to someone with deep regret and feed on it, using it to sustain themselves. Then, when their host dies, they feed on their soul.”
“And you just… killed it?”
“Yes.”
“Well, that’s nice of you, I guess.”
When the elevator arrives they both step on it.
“So, you just go around killing demons in the middle of the night?”
Yone looks at him, then sheepishly looks away. “I guess… that’s one way to put it. Although I primarily only hunt azakana. Those are the only ones I can inherently sense.”
“Right… Are you like… breaking into people’s houses to do this?”
Yone’s mouth twists. “Sometimes.”
K’Sante lets out a little laugh. “Who knew our responsible producer has a wild side. Kayn would get a kick out of this.”
Yone looks at him sharply. “You’re not telling him about this.”
“Oh absolutely not.”
Yone lets out a sigh of relief.
“So… you can sense these guys attached to people, so you go around killing them in the middle of the night?”
“Pretty much.”
“Is this why you’re always tired?”
Yone decides to not answer that.
K’Sante seems to take the silence for an answer. “How long have you been doing this?”
“As long as I’ve been able to see them.”
“Which has been… how long?”
Yone grimaces. “About 6 and a half years.”
K’Sante’s demeanor shifts to more serious, seemingly understanding the significance of that time.
“Yone…”
Yone sighs. At this point he might as well tell him everything.
The elevator opens to their floor, but they stay on the elevator as the doors close again.
“It… it was not long after my brother betrayed me, and I left the music industry. I was spiraling, listless and lost, unsure of what I was even supposed to do with myself anymore. I was driving, when I had no business driving. I went around a turn on a mountain road, but I was going too fast and the car went off the road.”
K’Sante is looking at him with wide eyes, silent.
“Next thing I know, I’m standing outside of my crashed and burning car, unharmed. I walked to the police station and reported my car as stolen and never spoke of it again. Ever since then I’ve been able to sense and fight these demons.”
Yone looks up at K’Sante to see his face full of awe and concern.
Yone swallows and continues. “A year later, the next time I saw my brother, I saw that he has an azakana attached to him. I killed it, but then the next time I saw one he had a different one attached to him. I keep killing them, but every once in a while a new one attaches to him.” Yone grimaces. He wants to say that he doesn’t know how to stop it, but that’s not necessarily true.
K’Sante seems to sense that, and stays silent. “Thank you for telling me, Yone.” He reaches over and hits the button to open the elevator doors. “It’s late. We should try to get some sleep.”
Yone nods, and they both step out of the elevator. When they reach Yone’s room, they both stop, and Yone turns to face K’Sante.
K'Sante shifts awkwardly for a moment. “Yone… I'm… I'm glad I got to meet you.”
Yone blinks and stares at him in awe.
“I’ll let you get to sleep,” K’Sante continues, “See you in the morning, Yone-”
Without even realizing what he’s doing, Yone has reached up and placed a hand on K’Sante’s cheek, causing K’Sante to stop mid sentence.
It’s at that point that Yone realizes what he’s doing. He probably shouldn’t, but he doesn’t care right now.
Yone leans forwards until he’s nearly at K’Sante, and K’Sante moves the slightest bit forwards to meet him. Yone presses into the kiss, letting the feeling of bliss it brings wash over him. K’Sante puts a hand on his waist and brings Yone slightly closer to him as they kiss, and Yone goes willingly.
Whenever they finally both pull apart, they just stand there looking at each other breathlessly.
Yone swallows hard. “Goodnight, K’Sante.”
K’Sante gives him the softest smile. “Goodnight, Yone.”
K’Sante turns and starts to walk away. Yone considers stopping him, but he doesn’t. Yone opens his door and enters his room. There’s no need to rush into something. K’Sante will be there in the morning. And now Yone has all night to think about this.

Day 6: Thread of Fate
Idk if this actually fits the theme very well, lol. Have it anyways! This is from the same fic as this fic excerpt! Hope you enjoy!
K’Sante hisses at the pain.
“Oh hush,” the old healer scolds him. “I know you’ve felt worse pain. And it wouldn’t be so bad if you weren’t so reckless.”
K’Sante lets out a light chuckle. “I prefer to call it bravery.”
“Next time I’ll call it stupidity.”
K’Sante full on laughs. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
The healer huffs and wraps a bandage around the disinfected wound. “Alright, you’re all done.”
“Thank you ma’am,” K’Sante says as he leaves her hut.
“I better not see you again for the rest of the week!” She yells at him.
K’Sante laughs. “We’ll see!”
Outside, K’Sante takes a deep breath and basks in the sunshine. People mill about the village, cheerfully waving to K’Sante as they pass. The distant sound of children’s laughter reaches his ears. After a hard fight, it’s always nice to stop and look around, remember what it’s all for.
As he’s taking a short stroll for the village, he hears a bit of a hubbub at the village entrance. It doesn’t sound like anyone’s in danger, maybe a visitor.
For a moment, K’sante’s hopes start to rise and he briskly makes towards the crowd. As the crowd parts for him, he hears several heavy pairs of footsteps, meaning it’s not the solitary man K’Sante was hoping for. Instead he comes face to face with-
“Tope!” K’Sante grins and brings the other man in for a hug, who receives it warmly. As K’Sante pulls back he studies Tope’s face. “It has been a while, my friend.”
Tope smiles at him. “It has.” Tope looks him over and sighs. “When was the last time I saw you uninjured?”
K’Sante waves him off. “I don’t keep track of small things like injuries.”
Tope sighs again. “You never change.”
“What brings you around?” K’Sante peers behind him at his warriors he brought with him. Mostly likely here on business rather than leisure then.
“Scouts spotted an ascended and their army heading in this direction. Figured we’d come by and give you a hand fighting them off if they appear.”
“I would appreciate the assistance. When should we be expecting them?”
“Not for a few days at least.”
K’Sante grins and claps Tope on the shoulder. “Good, that means we have time for a drink.”
***
Many drinks later, K’Sante and Tope are laughing over trading stories, memories they shared together and new news from their respective villages alike.
“I’m glad to hear all is well over there,” K’Sante says. “But what about you? How have you been? How’s your husband?”
Tope smiles. “I’m good, and he’s good. We recently took in a pair of siblings from a neighboring village that was raided. They’re a handful, and my husband has mostly taken on the burden of caring for them as I usually don’t have the time, but I do what I can.” Tope smiles softly. “They have become irreplaceable to us.”
K’Sante smiles at him. “A parent, huh? I’m sure that suits you well.”
“Hardly, I find new faults in myself every day.”
“That just means every day is a chance to learn.”
Tope laughs. “That’s rich, coming from you.”
“What are you talking about? I’m the epitome of learning from my mistakes!”
Tope huffs. “Now.”
K’Sante grins and elbows Tope. “Better late than never.”
Tope breaks into a smile. “I suppose there’s some truth to that.”
K’Sante laughs and takes another drink.
“Speaking of partners,” Tope starts. “Word has reached my village that you have one of your own. Everyone is all a buzz about how the pride of Nazumah has taken up with a strange foreigner.” Tope gives a sly smile. “A man with long silver hair that’s always wearing a mask. I said to myself, that description sounds familiar.” He raises an eyebrow.
K’Sante gives an embarrassed cough. “I can’t believe word has already spread.”
“I was surprised to hear about it.” Tope gives him a cheeky grin. “I thought he was out of your league.”
K’Sante gives him a playful shove. “Shut up.”
“But seriously, I’m happy for you. Yone is… strange, but he seems to be a good person.”
K’Sante nods. “He is. He’s wonderful.”
“I heard he comes by to visit every once in a while. Hopefully I catch him one of those times so we can have another chat.”
“I don’t need you teasing him.”
“I won’t tease him, you’re the main target.”
K’Sante gives a short laugh. “Well I don’t want him catching strays.”
Tope laughs as well. “I’ll try to minimize the damage.”
“Well, we should probably turn in before the sun rises. Do any of your people need help finding a place to stay?”
Tope shakes his head. “No, I think everyone is settled in.”
“I’m assuming you’ll be staying with your aunt?”
“That’s the plan. She’ll be miffed that I haven’t visited with her yet.”
K’Sante laughs. “I’ll walk with you over there and apologize to her for monopolizing you.”
Tope grins. “Sounds good, that way I can tell her it was all your fault.”
K’Sante laughs. “Deal.”
***
Nearly two weeks after Tope and his people left Nazumah, they had another visitor. This time, someone fetched K’Sante personally to tell him who it is.
K’Sante arrives at the village edge to see Yone surrounded by villagers eager to speak to him. K’Sante could save him, but he’s content to just watch Yone squirm for a bit. That’s when Yone notices him, and his face melts into a soft smile. K’Sante’s heart nearly stops at the sight of it.
That’s when the other villagers noticed K’Sante is there, and move aside to let him approach Yone.
K’Sante clears his throat. “Alright everyone, I know you’re all excited to see Yone, but give him a day or so to rest. Then you can bombard him with questions.”
Taking the hint, the villagers slowly disperse.
K’Sante takes a few steps forward, and gingerly takes Yone’s hand. “Welcome back my love.”
Yone smiles at him, but there’s something off. Yone is not a very energetic guy, but somehow he seems more melancholic than usual.
Deciding to not question him here, he gestures into the village. “Shall we retire to my home?”
Yone nods.
They walk together in silence, waving at villagers they pass by. K’Sante wants to ask about his travels, but he has a feeling that Yone isn’t exactly up to talking right now.
When they reach K’Sante’s home, Yone collapses on the cushions in the front room. K’Sante settles in beside him.
“What’s wrong my love?” K’Sante lets a soft hand trail through Yone’s hair.
Yone looks up at him through his mask. “I’ll have to apologize to the villagers, I won’t have time to tell them stories of my travels this time.”
K’Sante furrows his eyebrows. “You can’t stay long?” Yone is clearly upset, so he doesn’t want to show it on his face, but K’Sante is a little disappointed to hear that.
Yone shakes his head. “The only reason I came out here is because…” He looks up at K’Sante. “I came to ask for your help.”
K’Sante blinks in surprise. “My help?”
Yone nods. “Yes.”
Shaking himself out of his shock, K’Sante quickly nods. “Of course! Anything you need, just say the word.”
Yone grimaces slightly. “I hate to take you away from the village…”
“How long? I can send word to the other villages to send defenders to take my place if it’s short.”
“Maybe a few weeks.”
K’Sante nods. “That’s fine. What can I help you with?”
“I need help to go after an azakana.”
K’Sante raises an eyebrow. “What’s so special about this one that you need my help? Surely there must be something, I didn’t even know I could help you against them.”
Yone grimaces and looks away. “I will need help. It’s… it’s my brother’s azakana.”

Day 2: Mask
Another excerpt from my Phantom of the Opera AU Yosante fic! It's pretty short but I hope you enjoy!
K’Sante takes in the ballroom with awe. The chandeliers glitter in the candlelight, and the patrons glitter almost as much, covered head to toe in finery as they glide across the ballroom. It’s all so overwhelming. He’s normally not allowed to attend these sorts of gatherings. He had no idea how decadent they were. Still, it’s lonely. None of his friends from the chorus are here, only the most esteemed singers, investors and patrons are here. The so-called elite. K’Sante is dolled up in just as much finery, but he still feels out of place.
He tries to mingle, but all these people feel so hollow to him. Many asked to dance with him, and dance he does, if only just to be polite. But if he’s being honest, there’s only one person he really wants to dance with…
That’s when he spots him. He’s dressed in decadence that K’Sante has never seen on him, but he recognizes him regardless. After all, he’s wearing the mask he always wears.
Others are starting to notice him too, as he gracefully walks down the stairs. K’Sante hears nearby whispers wondering who he is, which noble he could be, drawn in by his beautiful figure with long silver hair tied back in a sharp ponytail, none the wiser that he definitely wasn’t invited.
K’Sante could care less if he was invited or not, and he grins at the figure and tries to make his way towards the base of the stairs, barely remembering to make a quick excuse to the attendee he wasn’t listening to.
The beauty descending the stairs seems to have noticed him too, and looks directly at him. They meet at the bottom of the stairs, and the phantom gives K’Sante a deep bow, and holds out his hand for his.
He looks up from his bow. “May I have this dance?”
K’Sante grins giddily and places his hand in the one Yone extended. “It would be my pleasure.”
As they glide across the dancefloor, K’Sante can feel that all eyes are on them, but he couldn’t care less. The only eyes he cares about right now are Yone’s, staring at him through that haunting mask. K’Sante feels a strange satisfaction now that he too is wearing a mask. Like they’re on the same playing field now. The masks don’t inhibit them from recognizing each other, but now Yone isn’t alone, forced to wear his alienation on his face.
The two of them dance together far longer than is proper, but K’Sante could dance with him all night, if he’s given the opportunity.
They only stop when a bell rings out, gathering the whole ballroom’s attention.
Jayce and Viktor are standing at the top of the stairs, and all eyes turn to them.
“Thank you all for attending our masquerade!” Jayce announces to the whole hall. “I hate to interrupt your merriment, but we have an announcement to make! We have decided on our next show! It will be an original play called Don Juan Triumphant, and the lead role shall be played by our magnificent primo uomo, K’Sante!”
The hall erupts in applause and cheers as K’Sante stands there starstruck. He didn’t think it was possible he would be given the lead role again. This was supposed to be just a fluke. He turns to the sound of clapping beside him, and sees Yone clapping along with everyone else, and giving him a soft smile.
Maybe K’Sante is just imagining things, but he doesn’t seem very surprised…
But before he can so much as give Yone a curious look, K’Sante is overwhelmed by attendees crowding in to congratulate him for his role. K’Sante can only helplessly watch as Yone fades into the crowd.
