Hildegard De Bingen: She's on a mission from God.
Visions have come in many forms, you have vision boards when doing personal projects or you may see spots in your eyes when you turn on lights too quickly there is a chance that you might see large walking muppet people in the night, shout to the Cryptonaut Podcast for giving me that nugget of information and not my own terrifying dreams of pandemics that turn the world into the latest Trolls…

Aretha Franklin: The Queen of Soul and Inspiration to Many
As I learned in the very prolific movies Trolls music can be one of the things that leads us through life and when we lose that string holding us together it can take the color out of life. Now do I enjoy those movies because they are about trolls or is it because I get to annoy my kids by singing all the songs obnoxiously, probably the second one but it solidifies that music regardless of the…

Strong Woman: good for Hugs and Heavy Lifts
The concept of strength has varied over the years and often the big muscular men were often seen primarily in circus acts such as the likes of Pierre Gasnier, Angus MacAskill and Sigmund Breitbart to name a few classics. They put on shows lifting heavy objects and putting them back down but in addition to the Strongman that you’d see travelling with the red and white tents that popped up…

The butcher, Miss Baker, a Child's Health Maker
In the early 1900s it was a world where men made a lot of medical decisions and the medical world lacked a lot of the things that are standards now.  You have things like soap, clean uniforms and with the invention of technology the ability to track and monitor your health using a simple sensor on a watch or arm band. Women in medicine have only been allowed to officially since the mid 1800s as…

Madeline Kahn: As hot as the flames, flames on the side of her face.
On a regular basis the ear worms or brain rot as the kids say will occasionally hit me and it could be “tis a flesh wound” when I hurt myself or the desire to sing Madeline Kahn’s yes and no melody from History of the World Part 1. Female comedians have always been pushing boundaries and she was probably one of the funniest women during the 70s and 80s in addition to the ladies of Cheers, Joyce…

Mona Parsons and Nell Shipman: Actresses and innovators.
Canadians have been making history in lots of ways whether it is the invention of sports like basketball, creating the Northwest Mounted Police and even creating the televised public service announcements from the 90s and early 2000s. If you were born before 1995 you likely remember the heritage moments and we have my favorite “Don’t you put it in your mouth” plus the confusion causing house…

Julia Child: Food, the French and Shark Repellent.
As a person who works out because I like to eat and also would not be classified as a petite lady Julia child has always sat in my brain as an idol in some way. She was a woman with a big personality and big dreams, she loved cooking with butter and she was a big name in the early television cooking show world. I don’t discriminate about where the food comes from as I believe in equality and…

Hekates: A goddess doing triple the work.
The list of gods in our history is above and beyond what any of us can imagine. There are gods the likes of Zeus, Hera and those who live and battle for Olympus. We have the gods that bow to Odin like Thor and Loki when they aren’t dressed as Freya and her fellow handmaidens because Loki made promises he couldn’t keep. Goddesses have covered all sorts of prayers whether you need the goddess of…

Agatha Christie: The Queen of Mystery
True crime has been a part of our literary history and it would primarily be written in newspapers until the birth of the printing press and the invention of printing technology. This technology from printing press to modern-day word-processing applications has allowed us to share our ideas and stories even faster and more easily. As we’ve gone through literary history we have also created genres…

Keiko Fukuda is serving tea and kicking butt and she is all out of tea.
Although my main martial arts love is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I have to make note of the sports and one of the people that paved the way for women in martial arts. In ways though judo is similar to jiu jitsu the main difference would be the grappling as it is a strange mix of wrestling and judo. The sports are not the same but there are aspects of judo that have been incorporated into the sport,…

Piercing Thoughts
My thoughts are not me.My thoughts are needles in my skin, piercing the veil that is my world.Pricking the nerves that set off my emotions.Every needle pulled replaced by a scarof past trauma and pain.Miniscule invisible scars that only I can see and feel.Pin pricks freshly bled as the needle is pulled from my scarred flesh. The dark red shining on the needles like a sharpened sword drawn after…

Betty White: Older than sliced bread and still a shining star even after death.
There are some actresses that will forever be in our hearts no matter how old we get or how long they’ve been gone. They will live on in the golden light of female centric comedy world, crazy old ladies feeding alligators and particularly as the woman who is often noted as literally older than sliced bread. We have several amazing women in comedy such as Carol Burnett, the modern day comics of…

Morgan Le Fay: The Main Medieval Witchy Woman
Witches have been a part of every culture. From the hags and crones of the European stories to Salem where many people were prosecuted and in the last few years pardoned. Witches have been noted to do everything from hexes and curses to turning people into newts, don’t worry they got better, but there has always been a note of mysticism and fear. This mysticism and idea of magic has even…

The Voices
The voices sit upon the shelf perched and ready to fall. Embedding themselves in my existence, Awaiting the moment when the cut opens and it can squeeze inside me. They sit on my shoulder and whisper in my ear, “you know they don’t like you.” Verbal parasites worm their way into the unconscious and plant seeds of doubt. Seeds labelled loneliness, fear and anxiety. Amidst the smiles is a…

Smoke and Fire
I tried to set the world on fireAnd set myself ablazeBillowing plumes of grey that surround meThe haze of smoke choking meTears stinging my eyes as I lose sight of what’s ahead of meLost in the fog that fills my lungsThe wheezing sound is coming from meToo bright, too hot, simply too much.

The Witch
The ancient witch, the hag or crone. Killing children and eating bones. Spells, hexes and a curse speeding forth the dark lit hearse. Houses built of dark enchantments, moss and vine covered huts. Request a spell and pay you must. For if you spite a local witch, You void your body and become a deadly lich.

Dark Thoughts
The thrum of notes inside my skin
revels in the silence now within,
beyond the specter that is my body
and the energy that surrounds me.
Moments ticking by like the beats my heart make.
The outside noise too loud,
too loud to still my broken thoughts.
The nerves under my skin tingling,
an uneasy feeling trying to tear apart my soul.
The dark and cancerous thoughtsleaching into my cells as I breathe.
