Sun Haven first Review
I've been unsure if I should buy the game and have been debating with myself for months about it. But I finally caved and decided that, despite its mixed reviews and the news about a bad company being supposedly behind the game I would give it a try. After all it was one of the most recommended games after googling cozy-games. (Most of the other most recommended ones I already have played...) So here is my "first impression" - review after playing through almost all of the first month.
First of all I have to say I do not really like the art style that much. BUT I never measure a game on its graphics. That is in fact one of the least important points for me if I review a game. However, if I find one really pretty or ugly I still at least mention it. The game is not very awful to look at, just... not my kind of style. I like the ones from Stardew Valley or Fields of Mistria better. I don't like to compare it with Coral Island or Echos of the Plum Grove, because they are graphically too different for a seemingly fair comparison. Anyway... with that out of the way, lets move on...
I was surprised when I started the game. I was supposed to choose what kind of "being" I am (Human, Naga, Angel, etc.) and then also what my "main job" is. I like the idea that my choices give me some bonuses and different starting resources. It was a nice touch that I didn't see in many other farming games before. I ended up choosing "Human" and "Farmer" but just because I am so used to it XD I didn't like being gender-neutral. I've noticed that I started to really dislike it when your character is gender-neutral by default without much choice other than looks. I do absolutely support including gender-neutral, trans and so on. But just as it is important for people who do not identify as male or female to have another option, it is important for me that I can identify my character as what I identify myself with, which is female. And not just by choosing a dress, long hair and big eyes with lashes on. But this is also not something that I measure a game on. I just noticed it and felt like mentioning it. The customization options were otherwise plenty and offered room for whoever and whatever you want tol be. From Angel-Wings to Snake-Legs (well... tail, rather ^^'), short hair, long hair, small eyes, big eyes... you can customize your characters looks quite well. Just the clothing is... well... I didn't like the choices we got much, but I guess I can not complain about that either as many farming games only offer a small amount of outfits in the beginning and I guess my character does look pretty in that dress. Once again, other than that, the whole "make your character" - part was nice. Almost took a bit too long - but that was mostly because I couldn't choose if I start out as a farmer, a rancher or royal XD
I have to tell you that the game is quite overwhelming in the beginning and some information aren't offered at the right time, or clear enough or... ever ^^' I didn't even notice that I could leave the bounds of my farm and the town to the west and the east until I explored my farm, found out that part of the beach belonged to me as well and decided to see if I can actually leave the farm in a direction that would not lead to my town. That the rusty keys from the mines vanish upon leaving is something the game will tell you every time AFTER you leave the mine. And nothing else about it. I didn't really wanted to go to deep into the mine the first time I went there and when I left, the key broke and I thought I couldn't return until I somehow get my hands on a copper key, because I didn't know the rusty keys would respawn somewhere the next day. And these are just a few examples. The map is actually quite big and after you realize you can in fact leave the town and your farm in another direction and gather resources there, you often don't know what to do first. And then, suddenly, another part of the map - under water - gets revealed to you. And the city down there has its own complicated main quest, that you have somehow to fulfill, while also taking care of your farm, the town and its own main-quest. You can call upon your map and it also shows most of the people and where they are and (but that is not as consistent) sometimes (it didn't always work for me for some reason) also if they have a job for you or if you can finish a job by talking to them. And that does help. But the overall size of the whole map is still too big for me ^^' I also wish the underwater questline and map would have been revealed much later. Because right now my farm keeps me so busy there is no way in hell I can leave my farm for long and also make it back home by midnight. And I do also have to make some money. (EDIT: I have found the elves town and immediately got access to the second of three farms I will own eventually and I was so overwhelmed by the fact that I have to basically start from scratch there because almost none of my materials can be used here AND the fact that I can not even only work on one farm at a time because the things that grow in Sun Haven do not grow in the Village of the Elves.) In any case... I do like the game so far but I am so overwhelmed by all the stuff I have to do and should do and want to do. I already have it so that one day is 60 minutes so I can get anything done, but it still doesn't feel like nearly enough. (Edit: At least after you get the second farm, they make transportation between farms a bit easier...)
I think the fact that you have an unlimited amount of energy is a blessing and a curse. On one hand I agree that it makes the game cozier by not stressing you out with energy-management. But on the other hand it makes time-managment a lot harder. Because my fields are ginormous at this point. It takes me almost 4 in-game-hours to water all my crops and take care of all my animals, because I have so much of them, since there is no reason not to. (Edit: It is also weird that you can use machines to feed your animals and get their products from them, but to water your crops without using a watering can you have to use a rain spell, which requires you to be there and use a lot of mana - the way watering crops works in this game is really inconvinient if you are supposed to have multiple farms.) The more crops and animals you have, the more money you make. And money is key in this game too. So when I am done with all my farm-shores I am often left with the question if I do have enough time to go to the mine or rather under the sea? Should I finish this one storyquest instead? Should I spend my time foraging? Should I build more machines? Should I gather some more resources? ALSO money-management is also hard because of the Unlimited amount of energy the game offers. I often spend all my 5000 or so coins on more crops that I plant immediately. If you have a limited amount of energy, you would limit the amount of crops you plant and animals you take care of to how much you can do with your current energy and you also consider leaving some energy left for gathering materials. Meaning if you have money left, but you know your have no more energy left at the end of the day to take care of my crops or animals you will not buy any, but save the money for something else instead.
I feel like they tried to make it harder to the players, despite the endless amount of energy, by the way how the mine is designed for example. While it logically speaking makes no sense whatsoever that after using the rusted key, the gates in the mines will close again and that they stay open after using a "proper" key, it makes it impossible for you to rush through the mines and get them done in a few days and thus have early access to the best materials and thus best weapons and tools. I guess this is also the reason why we have to water the crops ourselves and only a get a rain spell for help eventually. However I feel like stuff like this somehow works against the "cozy" part of the game. Because I can not remember the last time we were getting through the mines took me that long, even tho the monsters were that weak. (And all that while you do not even have to search for ladders or something like that.) I mean I was never good at mining and all, but since I am invincible and have no energy-limit (which is usually what I use weMod for to keep my cozy games cozy, even when in the mine, which usually stressed me out) it is really annoying how long it takes me to get deeper in the mine. And considering how much there is to do in this game and how much you are able to do in this game, having to constantly return to the mines to gather resources that help make the keys to unlock levels you have already been in, is rather annoying. This game sometimes feels like you have all the in-game-cheats one needs, but somehow they hardly make the game any easier ^^'
Although there are multiple ways to make the game easier in-game.- Like changing how long the day will be in real-time, or choosing to be invincible or keeping the seasonal pests away and so on. So theoretically, you can choose your difficulty level. Which I think is something every game that wants to be "cozy" should do. But I feel like that should include the option to decided if you want to have an energy level or not, instead of making the mines so unlogically complicated to conquer and not allowing Sprinkler, even tho you are supposed to handle 3 farms at onceat some point. Which brings me to the next point. I don't like managing multiple farms, it takes the cozy away and makes it stressful. So choosing between "everything works everywhere" and "every town has their own resources and seeds" should have been a possible option too. Also some adjustment to the "sleep timer" would have been nice. I am not cinderally and would like to stay at the ball past midnight XD Once again, I guess that serves as a replacement for the lack of a limited amount of energy... but once again, overall I do not like the system behind it. (But to be fair I didn't like it in the other farming games either and they do not have unlimited energy as an excuse...)
While I found making friends rather hard in most of my cozy farming games, I think its really nice and easy in Sun Haven (even tho the amount of Bacherlors and Bacherlorretts that are available after you have access to all places on the map is quite overwhelming andyesterday they updated the game and promised even more datable characters and I really do not think that is such a great idea. Because as easy as it is to gain hearts with villagers (mostly through conversations that seemed to be randomly triggered?) making them all your friends with that huge amount of characters that are all over the map seems almost impossible. I have found my future partner in crime already and thanks to the immens amount of hearts you get for a date (we had two at this point), I am almost ready to officially start dating. And all that within the first month. And I didn't give my future spouse even one gift. Some people might say its almost too easy, but I like it. I have too much other stuff to do to run to a certain character daily and desperately try to find a gift for this character on a regular basis. The system seems also more realistic for once.
Other than that, the game is a mix of basic farming-game-mechanics, sprinkled with some RPG and Magic-Stuff. Which could have been an amazing mix if it would have been balanced out better. The game also made it look like in the beginning like you can chose between farmer, or constructed or whatever, but you will not get far in the game if you do not farm, like it or not. And I guess it is a farming game, but I feel like choosing your '"profession" in the beginning was just for show and some extra boost. I don't mind that much, but it is likely very sad for people who thought they can do it like in Fields of Mistria and make their money mostly through exploring the mines and then forging the materials into new weapons, armor and tools that you can sell for a good price.
The story is... decent. I just don't like that the main-quest leads you to another farm, instead of making you first finish the main-quest and then (later in the game) they offer you a farm there. But most of the main quests do not have a time-limit so you can still theoretically go at your own pace. Which means even after getting that second (or third) farm you can continue to live in Sun Haven for the time beeing, but the main plot sadly will not move on as long as you haven't done whatever the main quest asks of you. Meaning that if it requires for you to "settle in" at your new farm, then that is what you need to do to get the plot moving.
The music is okay. Nothing to fance, but more than enough for a farming-game.
Once again, I am just at the beginning so for now I have nothing more to say. Only that I do not really find this game that cozy ^^'
Edit: I feel ashamed to say that I caved and bought one of those incredibly overpriced DLC-Costume-Sets and right afterwards I've lost all interest in this game because... somehow it doesn't give me much motivation after finding the Elf-City. Its not just how overwhelming all the stuff is you have to do, its also all this jumping around between citys that is quite annoying. And to add insult to injury, I have made so much money lately it doesn't feel like I need to archive anymore then I already have ^^' The RPG-Like Main-missions are plain boring and don't give you any reason to want to do them. I gained nothing but more unnecessary space and work from fulfilling the mission that led me to the hidden town in the woods with the colorful female dragon. Filling the Museum is something for people who play games 100% as it feels like it brings me nothing necessary. The games main plot is lacking when it comes to its missions. And its kind of sad, because the game had great potential. I did quite enjoy the first In-Game-Weeks and Real-Life-Hours of playing. But now it feels like an endless to do list that just doesn't promise me anything useful in return. I love the skill-tree in this game, but hiding all the good stuff like Kegs and so on in there might not have been a smart move. All mission give me is usually some money, some experience and some items I may or may not exactly need. The whole system with how you unlock things is rather bad. Unlocking the second Village (no matter if you go to the North or decide to go to the west first) should have been locked behind certain conditions. Like finishing the mine, reaching at least the first winter, beeing married and so on. And in the meantime, there should have been smaller story-quests happening that keep things interesting. But also nothing as big as suddenly sending you to an underwater-city out of nowhere. Quantity and Quality do not work hand in hand here. Lots of places to be, to explore, big-main-missions to do... but in the and its too much too fast. The farming is really just for money-making here too, almost like HM Winds of Anthos which was in my eyes a huge failure of a farming game, because farming was just an afterthought for money and energy in this game. Aside from your casual random Villiager-Mission there is barely any need for you to farm. Even with the Skill-Level 15 required to move on with the main-plot relatively early on is a joke, because it can be in ANY skill-caterogy, including exploration. Which on one hand should be great because it means you can do, whatever you prefer to do and do not have to be stuck on farming, but it feels like the plot doesn't feel right like this. Either I am a farmer or I am not. Anyway, there will likely no usual "end of the first year" - final -review from me for this game, as I think I will not continue playing, as it bores me to death at the same time as it overwhelms me.
So after just one In-Game months, I will give my points in the first impression-review with a 5 out of 10 points. The game lost a huge amount of points for: Quantity over Quality. A main plot that doesn't give you much motivation to do anything more than run around and talk to people to quickly finish the missions and thus the plot. For the fact that somehow they ruined the great idea of not having limited energy by making stuff like the mines far too complicated just because of that. I also do not care much about the characters, plus thanks to too many places, there are too many hollow people that you do just not care about, because when and why and how should you? A few pluspoints for the fact that the Skill-Tree in itself is great. Music is alright. Customisation for your character is partly very unique (Choosing what you are and what your Strength is...) and could have been amazing if it wasn't for all that great stuff hiding behind a paywall. And a pluspoint for the fact that having unlimited energy could have been very cozy.
I would NOT recommend this game, for everyone who wants a cozy farming game. Stradew Valley, Fields of Mistria and Coral Island are much, much better and much longer more fun to play.

sorry that you think my fictional ship is illegal. I actually consulted a fictional lawyer about it and he had a talk with a fictional cop about the fictional laws and then they both looked at me, and very seriously said "we'll allow it because it's hot."

According to VGP, a Canadian site. Horizon might release on October 31. Like the Sky Remake, take this with a grain of salt. Funny enough Daybreak II came out on Valentine’s Day. It would be one Gehenna of a Halloween if this is true!
