Shells, swords, and secrets
Once every sunset of summer solstice the goddess of every lasting harmony and concord uses her ethereal dove wings of the gods to fly to Ithaca from Thebes casting peace and joy to all she flys over, why must she fly every summer solstice? Is it to keep her powers alive and well… all are wrong she must fly over to Ithaca to grab shells for her mother, Lady Aphrodite which in return she gets to live on earth mingling with mortals and causing peace if she so pleases
This year
was different
this summer solstice at the age of 20 quite a young goddess, On Ithaca’s glamorous beaches with sand as soft as snow and waters as blue as the sky, Harmonia picked up shells she thought her mother would enjoy and then putting them in Hermes sacred
satchel that he lets her borrow every solstice that has the power of moly powerful enough to beat the gods itself, can only be carried if the owner so gives permission for God or goddess to use. She admired a pink shell before putting it in the bag, She looked into the distance to find Laconian hound running towards her with a man running after it, the hound tripped Harmonia possibly causing some shells in the satchel to break. She went to get up before the man following the dog came to Harmonia offering her a hand to help her
“I-I am so so so sorry! About- my dog!! Please forgive me-!” The man said towering over her “can I please make it up to you-! Y-you can come to dinner with me-! Or us-! I-I mean do you want to go to dinner with me-! Please let me give you dinner!” Harmonia’s cheeks had gotten a light pink hue from the offer “S-sure..-!” She said trying to obviously appear confident but inside she felt the urge to hold this man safe and secure in her dove wings
thank you…” the man said “m-my name is Telemachus-! W-what’s yours if you want to tell…” Harmonia thought her brain had cracked or the golden divine blood running through her body had stopped all because of a cute guy asking for her name, she had to think of a fake name and fast she couldn’t give out her identity this fast “my names H-…Heraia!” Telemachus smiled slightly “that’s a pretty name.” He said without thinking “w-well I-i mea-“ Harmonia smiled “thank you, your eyes are like stormy tide pools…” Telemachus cheeks turned red “uh-! Come along h-her…heraia! We don’t want to miss dinner hahah-!!” She gently grabbed his hand and pace fasted back into the grass with her as the hound followed behind them, on there way back Telemachus tried to do small talk twice but he couldn’t find the words so after he collected his senses together he was finally able to say “So are you from here, I haven’t seen you around” Harmonia’s heart had skipped a beat “y-yeah I’m not from here, I’m from Thebes..” Telemachus tried to act casual “oh, U-uh nice. I know Thebes from uh that one goddess… harmony I think her name was. She doesn’t like snakes… you know she kinda looks like you.” He said nervously “o-oh-! That’s very kind but I’m not Harmonia.. I’m not that pretty” she lied, trying to make herself feel better by calling herself pretty “you know uh… the-the uh palace is …” he stopped at the main entrance standing at the portico “So uh .. follow me-!” He walked up the palace steps opening the door for ‘Heraia’ to walk in. once they were both inside he guided her to the dining room that wasn’t filled with suitors but , Penelope and Odysseus and food, Harmonia nervously sat down next to Telemachus trying to avoid eye contact with the royals in the room “So Telemachus…” Penelope stated “who’s this..?” Telemachus looked up at his mother at the voice of his name “h- her name is heraia- Argos tripped her so I wanted to make it up to her..” Penelope raised her eyebrow briefly she’s curious, not rude. “My son brought home a girl, that’s something I never thought he would do…” Odysseus said smirking as he looked at Telemachus. Harmonia browsed the food on the table olives, grilled fish, honey-drenched pastries, Harmonia doesn’t need food to survive she’s a god after all. She hasn’t even really eaten at all before she pokes her food with her fork attempting to hold it correctly, “So heraia.. why are you in Ithaca in the first place?” Penelope spoke, Harmonia became nervous again having to say quick lies to seem mortal “im coming to Ithaca from Thebes for an errand for my mom”. Penelope spoke again “is your family in Thebes?” “My family is …complicated… they-they’re just all around Greece-! I don’t have family problems we’re just scattered.” Odysseus quietly murmur to Penelope, “She doesn’t eat like a mortal,” under his breath. Harmonia freezes. Penelope throws him a glare that basically said ‘Stop.’ Telemachus cleared his throat awkwardly, trying to cut through the silence. “She—uh—Heraia’s here for the shells. For her mom. Right?” He looked over at Harmonia, eyes wide like he was begging her to just go with it.
Harmonia nodded a little too quickly. “Y-yeah. My mom loves shells. Especially pink ones. I always bring her some. It’s… kind of a tradition.”
Penelope smiled politely. “That’s sweet.” Odysseus looked like he wanted to say something else, but Penelope kicked his ankle under the table. The meal passed with soft conversation and awkward pauses. Harmonia mostly listened, her fingers brushing the edges of her plate like she was trying to understand the rhythm of mortal life. Occasionally, she’d glance at Telemachus, and their eyes would meet for a moment too long. Harmonia tried to eat a honey cake but then realising ‘oh shit I don’t know how to eat’ she held back multiple coughs. Once dinner was done Telemachus spoke up “I’ll walk heraia… out… from here” he let out a humorous laugh “Will you..?” Penelope asked her tone half teasing Telemachus smirked “she’s not from
Here it’s only polite” once the 2 got up Telemachus started to guide her to somewhere else in the castle he wanted to show her his room Argos followed behind them or… mostly Harmonia he could pick up on Harmonia’s divine smell of the gods above.
His room was on the second floor the doors carved with dolphins and olive branches, He let Harmonia inside first letting her admire his wide bed, draped in woven blankets the color of stormclouds and bronze. One corner of the room had a weapon rack which slightly scared Harmonia but it wore off quickly, A desk near his bed filled with scrolls and unfinished letters one of the desk legs marked by Argos bites and then right in front of her was a small balcony the curtains being a tapestry of boats that Penelope had given to him as a gift when he was young. He lead Harmonia to the balcony “so… uh..” he started “Sorry about my parents,” he said, he rubbed the back of his neck. “They’re… intense…” They’re not so bad,” Harmonia said. “Your mom’s really nice. Your dad looks like he’s killed twelve people before breakfast, but, you know… charming.”
“yeah he did something like that not that long ago… except a lot more..” harmonia softly giggled, Telemachus blushed gods he loved her laugh “S-so… what’s in the satchel..?” Telemachus asked “Shells..” Harmonia said confidently “the sunsets really pretty tonight…” she leaned against the balcony railings “y-yeah d-do you want me to take you too the guest room” Telemachus said “No thanks.. I have a place in town.. I’ll just stay here until the moon rises and then I’ll leave you alone.”
Hours had passed Telemachus was asleep in his bed softly snoring as Argos slept next to him. The moonlight bathed the stone balcony in silver, making the vines shimmer like they’d been spun from stars.
Harmonia sat on the edge of the railing, legs swinging lightly, toes brushing the carved marble. Her wings were folded tightly against her back, her body still except for the rise and fall of her chest. She looked back at Telemachus once more “I shouldn’t be here. I can’t do this.”
“But why do you make me want to stay, silly mortal boy…” harmonia pushed herself off the balcony her wings fluttering in the air as she hesitated going away from him, she awfully loved the mortal boy more than she should’ve, she flew off into the distance slowly but surely Telemachus stirred up form the sound of feathers flapping in the distance he woke up to bend his head off his bed looking at his balcony to spot a large dove feather on it, he was curious so he got out of bed and picked up the feather examined it a bit before looking up at the night sky seeing a large pair of dove wings flapping, Telemachus stared up at the sky, the feather still in his hand.
The wings were barely visible now — just a shimmer against the stars, like the moon had decided to grow a heartbeat. Too big to be a bird. Too graceful. Too… intentional.
He blinked. Rubbed his eyes. Still there.
“What in Hades…?”
He turned the feather over in his hand. It was soft and white, almost glowing, but it shimmered faintly — like starlight caught in silk. Not the kind of feather you’d find on a regular dove. Not even one of his mother’s sacred ones.
“Heraia?” he whispered to the empty room.
But the only answer was the hush of waves below, and the sound of Argos snoring downstairs.
He looked at the balcony railing. The curtain still swayed a little — as if someone had just been there.
Harmonia looked back down at him briefly before looking back up at the moon she tightened her grip on Hermes sacred satchel
“He saw me. I was too loud… I’ll be in trouble if Aphrodite finds out…” she glared up at the moon flying in place radiating in its glowing beauty, she was mesmerised “Dear mother…Why does it hurt to leave him?”
Telemachus stands back onto the balcony clenching the feather like a precious relic “Heraia…” he said softly into the night, he rose his voice a bit “Harmonia-!” She freezes midair. Her wings stop flapping for a second, and she drops just slightly before catching herself. “So you do know,” she murmurs to the moon. She turned back to the palace before hovering onto Telemachus’s balcony she was hesitant Telemachus’s voice cracks, just barely above a whisper “Why didn’t you tell me? I wouldn’t have… I mean—was any of it real?” She looks at him, her hazel eyes glowing just faintly.
“All of it was real. Too real. That’s why I have to return to mother Aphrodite .”
…
He takes a step forward. She finally lands on the balcony rail again, wings out behind her like silk sails. He reaches up, hand on her cheek, gently grounding her
“Please,” he whispers. “Don’t fly away yet.”
She leans in. The kiss is gentle yet so aggressive, trembling, full of things unsaid. Harmonia pulled back cradling Telemachus’s cheek “If I stay, I break the rules. My mother would… I’m not even supposed to be this close to you.” He nodded slowly he didn’t understand but tried his best “Then just tell me you’ll come back next solstice.” She hesitated giving him a sad … but sweet smile. “I’ll try…try for you… before I go…”
A thin bracelet rested there — woven from seafoam-colored thread and strung with tiny golden charms shaped like doves, pink flower petals, and a single conch shell. It pulsed faintly with divine energy, like it had a heartbeat of its own. “Here,” she said, gently untying it. “This is yours αγάπη μου…” Telemachus blinked he swore he could hear a faint harmony playing in his ears “is this like divine power…?” Harmonia smiled softly. “A little. It’s mostly just mine. I made it when I was younger, before I even had my wings. It holds protection, peace, and…” she slightly hesitated. “Memory. Not because I don’t want you to forget me, but because I know you’ll try to convince yourself I wasn’t real.” She tied it around his wrist “this way… you’ll know who I was… hopefully..” Telemachus swallowed hard, his throat suddenly tight. “Hera—no. Harmonia… are you sure?” “I want you to have it… not because of godly power.. but because of our fate..” “I’ll always wear it…” he mumbled his voice cracking, Harmonia stepped back, her fingers lingering against his just one moment longer. Her wings shimmered with starlight now, fully unfurled. The sea wind lifted the ends of her hair like it, too, didn’t want her to go.
She looked at him one last time — eyes full of every word she couldn’t say — and whispered to him “Μη με λησμονήσεις, ὦ ἀγαπημένε…”
Do not forget me, my beloved.” Then, without another word, she pushed off the railing.
Her wings caught the air like silk sails, and she rose — slowly, gently — into the moonlight. No thunder. No flash of godly power. Just wind, feathers, and the soft shimmer of a love too big for a mortal world.
Telemachus stepped to the edge of the balcony, the bracelet clutched in his hand, watching her silhouette shrink into the stars. “Harmonia,” he whispers to the stars. “I’ll wait...” and then there she was holding Hermes sacred satchel too tight she knew this had to be done, Telemachus smiled at her
Harmonia soared over Ithaca every movement she made Ithaca faded behind her the scattered stars guided her back to Olympus to finish her job. She flew up towards the golden heights of Mount Olympus. In the grand halls, Aphrodite awaited, radiant as ever, a soft smile gracing her lips as Harmonia approached with the satchel cradled carefully in her arms.
“These shells,” Harmonia said, gently unveiling the delicate treasures inside — the pink, pearlescent gifts gathered from Ithaca’s shores. “For you, Mother.”
Aphrodite’s eyes sparkled with delight. “You never fail to bring me the ocean’s sweetest secrets.”
Harmonia smiled softly. “It is my honor mother.” She hugged Aphrodite before pulling back “i have to return Hermes satchel” Aphrodite kissed her forehead “alright my child go off now” they both laughed before Harmonia walked off to go find Hermes. Harmonia was walking through the celestial columns before Hermes flew behind her “BOO-!!” Hermes said “HERMES-?!. TAKE YOUR STUPID BAG-!!” She threw the bag at Hermes, he caught it “OKI DOKI BYE HARMONIA-! “ Hermes stopped in his tracks before swiftly flying back to Harmonia “Soo… what’s happened this time… “ he smirked, Harmonia looked at him weirdly “what do you mean Hermes..” Hermes laughed “you kissed ody’s kid-!!” “H-HERM-!!” She cover his laughing mouth with her hand “gods i hate you Hermes… were you watching me..” she removed her hand from his mouth “yeah.” He said bluntly. He giggled “alright alright! Before you send your brothers out to get me, big deal you kissed ody’s son, but it’s fine! I won’t tell anyone” Harmonia chuckled “your quite literally the god of lies”
“Come on Harmonia! I promise I won’t tell anyone” “fine.. I won’t send my brothers to attack you but if you dare tell anyone I’m disappearing under unknown circumstances” she said being passive aggressive Hermes just giggled “ok bye!” He flew through the columns before Harmonia sat on a stone bench near a fountain she looked and thought the water looked liked Ithaca’s waters clear, nice, refreshing. She smiled.
“I love you Telemachus” at that moment her dove wings rested softly on the stone bench..
