b) being inspired by hunter gatherers, a lifestyle literally all humans come from, is not the same as “noble savage racism” and it’s kind of weird to jump to that conclusion . it sounds like she’s talking about cavemen / returning to basic human origins more than anything else

c1) when someone says “you can say this but no one will understand you” when it comes to adding words to an already existing conlang, that is because you are adding words to an already existing conlang, and not everyone will understand what the new words you are adding mean. that’s how language works. this is also a language of minimal words so of course there will be hesitancy surrounding adding new words . because the point is having few words .

c2) the point of the language is to be a fun thought experiment abt expressing things and feelings through minimal language. asking toki ponists to perfectly translate and decipher a complex sentence is pointless and not what the language is meant for. constructed languages like toki pona have different purposes and they are not always the same as natural languages . there ARE translations of complex texts in toki pona like the wizard of oz, but expecting toki ponists to rise to a “challenge” that is not what the language is about is a bad faith argument . it’s not “admitting you can say less” the language is meant to be based on personal interpretation and isn’t meant to be the sole way you communicate . it is not a real language it’s a constructed language based on a thought experiment and philosophical ideals.

honestly relieved that i'm not the only anti-tokiponist out there. personally as an ex-member i never really got culty vibes from its community but i did nope out due to several reasons, mainly:

a) the main gathering space for it is EXTREMELY anti-para

b) the motivation for the conlang itself was noble-savage-style racism:

c) i had been watching the community gradually slide towards a pseudo-descriptivist "you can say this but people won't understand you" stance on adding words, seemingly with no care for others at least *trying* to understand

a) unsurprising, given those i've interacted with before

c) i have repeatedly challenged tokiponists to translate a complex english sentence into toki pona and then get another speaker to translate it back and get the same thing. no one has ever taken me up on the offer, as if admitting you fundamentally can say less in the language
