Bitcoin mining pool BTC.com reports $3M cyberattack

A cyberattack on the well-known cryptocurrency mining pool BTC.com caused a sizable loss of funds for both the business and its clients.

Cyberattack on BTC.com happened on December 3, with attackers stealing around $700,000 in client assets and $2.3 million in the company's assets, the mining pool's parent firm BIT Mining Limited formally declared on December 1. 26.

Law enforcement officials in Shenzhen, China were informed of the cyberattack by BIT Mining and BTC.com. The local authorities then started gathering information for their investigation into the incident and made requests for help from pertinent Chinese agencies. The announcement states that the local cooperation has already assisted BTC.com in internally recovering some of the assets.

"The company will devote considerable efforts to recover the stolen digital assets," BIT Mining said, adding that it has also deployed technology to "better block and intercept hackers."

Despite facing the incident, BTC.com continues running its mining pool services to customers, the firm stated:

"Apart from its services related to digital assets, BTC.com is currently conducting business as usual. Client fund services are unaffected."

BTC.com, one of the biggest cryptocurrency mining pools in the world, offers multi-currency mining services for different digital currencies, such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC). In addition to offering mining services, BTC.com also runs a blockchain browser. Its parent company, BIT Mining, is a listed company on the New York Stock Exchange that is open for trading.

According to data from BTC.com, the mining pool operated by BTC.com is the seventh largest mining pool in the world, contributing 2.5% to the distribution of all mining pools over the previous seven days.
