“Earth is not a separate country. It does not stay out of the war. It is the battlegrounds for it. The means of one side winning over the other. They’re neutral because they don’t start out inherently good or evil. They make themselves what they are.” Aziraphale furrowed his brows at her words. “What it’s all going to come to? You mean the final war? Armageddon?” Surely she wasn’t thinking of stopping it herself, was she? He certainly wasn’t going to say no to a walk now. Not when she was potentially laying a bombshell at his feet. Something he was sure she knew he wouldn’t be able to resist. “Perhaps you’re right. Perhaps I should tone down the curiosity.” Like that was ever going to happen.
“Humans are not a part of this war, though. No matter how much Heaven or Hell likes to pretend otherwise. Caught in the crossfire, yes. But they aren’t fighting it. Not really.” A fact that she hated, but she had known it would be this way. All of her creations twined together in a dance that would last a very long time. “Yes, Armageddon. The Great Plan that was written and all that,” she commented, already beginning to walk and not bothering to look back to make sure he came along. It was a moment before she spoke again. “I don’t think you should, actually. Weaknesses aren’t always a bad thing. In your case, it may end up being quite useful, actually,” she commented. “It sets you apart from many other demons. All of them, actually.”

“I believe in war terms, it’s considered no man’s land. True middle ground would mean there is something other than demon or angel, and that something is human.” And he certainly wasn’t human. Though, he did hate Hell. Always had and always will. So of course he took every opportunity to be on Earth that he could. Avoiding going there just as humans tended to. “Stretching the truth to prove a point hardly ever works. So forgive me for correcting the all knowing. Though, I suppose I’ll budge. You have peaked my curiosity.” It really wasn’t a hard thing to do. “What brings you to Earth? Let alone to me? It can’t really be to talk about me, or to catch up. Unless there’s something you’re trying to figure out. I’m almost afraid to ask what’s been going on in your head to bring you here.”
“So, somebody whose country is at war cannot be neutral in the conflict? Not having an idealism that fits with either side in the war?” she asked. She knew that he and Crowley didn’t fit into their given molds. “You might say that some humans don’t even meet the qualification of neutral. Actively rooting for Heaven or Hell.” She knew that he certainly didn’t seem to actively root for Hell, at least. “Curiosity always was your biggest weakness, I suppose. Though it won’t lead to anything drastic on my end this time, that much I can promise. What you do is up to you, of course.” She gave him a half a smile, turning to look around a bit. “I come to Earth more than you might think. But recently, I’ve been thinking about what this is all going to come to. Can I persuade you to walk with me?”

Aziraphale scoffed at her words. “You think I could raise myself above demons? Above Hell? There’s no middle ground for us. It’s one or the other, and I don’t really have a choice. Now, do I?” It most certainly felt like he didn’t. It didn’t matter which group he was a part of. He didn’t fit into either, but he was forced to be in one. “I don’t hand such things over to children,” he said indignantly. Hand going to his chest as if he had just been physically wounded. How dare anyone think such a thing of him. “That could cause quite the mess if they were to mess it up. I leave that for the adults. And teenagers that go rummaging around abandoned buildings. They have enough cognitive reasoning to decide whether they should do something or not.” There was a short pause before he quickly added something else. “And not everything I hand out are rituals. Most of it’s just information that has long been forgotten. Things people would rather be kept hidden.”
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe we’re standing on middle ground right now,” she said. Earth was and always would be the middle ground, no matter how much angels and demons fought for it. “You don’t have a choice in what you are, but you will always have one in what you do.” She raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms as he went through his theatrics. She had to stop herself from rolling her eyes at him. “Of course. Next time I’m trying to make a point, I’ll try to be more accurate,” she told him. Had he always been this dramatic, or was he just specifically directing it at her? She sighed, waiting for him to finish. “I didn’t come here to argue the nuances of your tactics,” she told him. “Even though you seem hellbent on doing so. I know that you don’t always hand out rituals or whatever. I know the knowledge you tempt them towards. You don’t have to tell me that I’m wrong about it.”

“I don’t wish to change who I was. There’s just no point in me going by that name anymore. ‘A rising star.’ Doesn’t exactly fit anymore, does it?” Then again, everything that rose did fall. His name was a cruel joke, and he had refused to go by it when he fell. If he was going to be called anything, he might as well be humanity’s scapegoat. “I’m a demon. Isn’t that what I’m supposed to aim for? The destruction and suffering of humanity?” Still, he didn’t want them to suffer. He just wanted them to have knowledge, and to allow themselves pleasures. “Humans that have a thirst for knowledge are going to find what I grant them anyway. Especially with anything they could want at their fingertips. They’re as insatiable as ever. Always craving more.”

She sighed, glancing down at her hands for a moment. “One might argue that you managed to bring yourself back up, to be here. Even if you’ve fallen once, you always have a chance to start rising again.” Maybe not back to the rank of angel, but he had already set himself apart from other demons. “Well, most do, but that wasn’t actually the real qualifier for becoming one. I think that’s more of a sentiment that really took root over time. You’re allowed to, of course, but that wasn’t why you fell in the first place.” He could lie to himself all he wanted. But she knew that humanity’s downfall had never once been his intention. “I don’t think a little fifth grade boy is going to find a book of 'forbidden’ rituals without a little help from you, though. I’ll give you insatiable, but there are other ways to give them knowledge.”

rebellicvs:
“For a few years.” Vague but still true. He had no desire to talk about his life since Heaven, especially not in this moment and he was sure his short answers would make that clear. She would learn about what he had been up to sooner or later anyways but he chose later.
He made no move to argue her statement, mostly because they both knew the truth and he saw no point in voicing that out loud. When she finally agreed to come along, however, he let out a small sigh - in relief or exhaustion even he couldn’t tell.
Nodding he stepped closer to her, picked her up bridal style and with a shrug of his shoulders his wings unfurled. It had been a long time since he had revealed his full set of wings. All four pairs of them to be exact. All of them obsidian coloured and it seemed as if they swallowed all the light without ever reflecting any of it.
Normally he would only reveal one pair, after all, that was far more common among the demons that had fallen (if they kept their wings at all). But then again, he hadn’t truly fallen in the end and wasn’t a normal angel either…
One strong flap of his wings and they were already quite a bit away from the ground. For a moment they hovered in the air before he flew in the direction of his home. No one would be able to detect them, not from the ground, not from an aircraft and not even with technology. It was a good thing that it was late however because it made it easier for him to use his powers to cloak them better, just in case an angel or demon should be nearby.
If it weren’t for his wings, it would have taken them quite some time till they reached his loft but with them it took them only a few minutes. Landing on the balcony, he gently let her down so she could stand on her own two feet again and with a wave of a hand he opened the balcony doors, allowing them to enter.
“I should have a first aid kit around here…” He mumbled as he stepped inside, wings hidden from view once again, easily sidestepping the towers of books and other knick-knacks that were spread on most available surfaces. His healing abilities weren’t the best and he really didn’t want to test how well they would work on God’s weakened vessel right now.
“Ah! Here it is.” With a quick tug, the first aid kit was freed from a mountain of books, which threatened to topple over but miraculously remained standing. “Sit down and I’ll see what we can do.”
She nodded, deciding not to try to continue the conversation when he clearly didn’t have any interest in it.
She didn’t fight when he lifted her, instead trying make it as easy as possible for him to carry her. Her breath caught in her throat when his wings came out, and her expression became unreadable as she stared at them. They were where the darkness he had come from showed the most, and seeing them was the most solid reminder that he was here.
Not that she hadn’t believed it, but it was hard when he had been gone for so long with no signs of him or if he was even alive - he wasn’t about to be easily killed, and she knew that. But to have gone so long and hidden so completely...
She supposed she should have expected it with where he came from, but it had still gnawed at her for all this time. She only wished that it hadn’t come to this for her to see that he was alive.
She held as still as possible as they flew. It wasn’t easy to fly while carrying somebody, and any excessive movement was made all the more painful when she added to it. She was grateful when it was over, and took only a moment to catch her breath once she was set on her feet again.
She followed him in, with one last glance at the spot where his wings had been. Her brows furrowed slightly when he said he had a first aid kit, wondering why exactly he would need them. She took a little more care in navigating through the place than him, both due to injury and a lack of familiarity with the place
She watched the books for a moment to make sure they wouldn’t fall, but she could have expected him to keep them from going down. She nodded, and moved to a couch that she spotted amongst the various stacks. “Thank you,” she said as she took a seat. She doubted she would be able to take of it herself.
“Is first aid just another hobby you picked up?”

“Don’t call me that.” He worked to lesson the hatred in his voice at the sound of his old name. That wasn’t him anymore. It hadn’t been him in a long time. “My name is not Aziraphale. That angel hasn’t existed in six thousand years.” Surely she knew that, and had just made a slip up, but he didn’t like the feeling of knowing that’s who she was thinking of when she looked at him. “They deserve to know. Deserve the chance to make that choice. If you didn’t want certain things being known, you shouldn’t have created that knowledge. There’s a lot of things you could have done differently if you were really concerned with not bringing about the downfall of humanity.” Instead, she played games with the universe. Rolled the dice and watched what happened.
She hadn’t realized her slip-up, but the reaction he gave was not what she would have expected. She looked at him, considering. “Changing your name doesn’t change who you once were, no matter how much you wish it might. But - I’ll try not to make the mistake again.” She had been more focused on trying to explain, but it seemed that he wasn’t interested in what she had to say about that, either. “You should know better than anyone that sometimes knowledge isn’t worth the pain that it brings. Or have things changed that much, and now you do want humanity to suffer? I can’t say I never intended for that knowledge to exist. But I didn’t intend for it to be common knowledge, which seems to be your goal.” There had to be a certain balance, after all. Good couldn’t exist without evil, and vice versa.

“That would depend on the type of conversation you intend to have. I see even after thousands of years, you’re still as cryptic as ever,” he remarked. Azazel knew she wouldn’t easily go away. So he at least had to indulge her until she was satiated once again. Fire burned in his eyes at her words regarding his fall. “My decisions? My decisions? You told us to love your new creations. To care for them and watch over them. Lucifer and his group were cast out because they refused to do so. But I… I did everything you asked. I adored your creations, and yet I still fell. Where in that was it my decisions that brought it about?”
“Being straightforward was never my strong suit. I’ve found that people are going to twist what you say no matter how you say it, so I might as well be cryptic if they won’t listen anyway.” She could see his reaction, and her lips pursed. She couldn’t really give an answer that he would accept. “I know you loved them, Aziraphale, but you can love a thing too much. To love something the way you did can lead to its downfall, and I couldn’t risk it. Even now, you give them the kind of knowledge that puts them in danger, or allows them to put others in danger. You fell because you didn’t know where to draw the line.”

Well, here went nothing. Taking the last few steps, he reached out and gently pulled Her closer to hold her close. This, after all, was still one of the very old exits where you still had to use your wings to leave and weakened as She seemed to be, it would be saver if he carried Her instead.
It felt strange to release his wings after having hidden them from the physical plane for so long. The large, midnight blue appendages unfurled slowly, stretching wide for a moment before snapping into action.
As he jumped through the exit, something caught his attention out of the corner of his eyes and he turned his head enough that blue met violet eyes, the latter widened in shocked surprise.
Michael didn’t think, he simply reacted and pushed himself and God as fast as possible away from his younger sibling with several strong flaps of his wings. He took several detours before flying to his current home, not wanting any possible pursuers to be able to follow them. Still, even then he felt slightly uneasy as he gently let God down onto the couch of his spacious living room. “We should be save here.” Hopefully…
“…Do you have any wounds I need to look at?” He probably should have asked that sooner but there had been different priorities to consider first.
She followed Michael’s sudden change of attention, and she fought the urge to swear. Gabriel had been the most adamant about keeping her until she answered their questions.
She wanted to relax when they were at his home, but she couldn’t. She shifted carefully, opening her mouth to say something, but she wasn’t sure what to say after what he had done. Especially since the chance he took had led to him being discovered.
His question brought the various aches and pains that had worsened when they got to Earth. She had a few that she knew had been bad when they first gave them to her, but she shook her head. “Nothing that isn’t already healing,” she told him.
She looked up at him, hesitating before she spoke again. “I shouldn’t stay here,” she said. “Not now that Gabriel knows you’re alive, and took me. He won’t stop, and my presence here will only make it easier for him to find you. With you and Lucifer gone, Gabriel has taken it upon himself to fill your positions. He won’t be happy that there’s even a slight chance you could put that new power at risk.”
Especially if you have me on your side, was what she didn’t add. Gabriel had shown himself to be ruthless for an archangel, and was at the forefront of trying to restart the apocalypse.

“…Maybe we could try and find Death or Fate and ask them if they know anything? Or maybe someone else entirely…” The Antichrist responsible was also an option if nothing else would help. Maybe the boy could still help.
“Either way, we’ll find a way to help you, I’m sure of it.” He really tried to be a realist instead of being too much of a pessimist or an optimist but right now he really was attempting to be more optimistic, for God’s sake if nothing else.
She hesitated for a moment, thinking. “I don’t know. I would rather not involve Death just yet,” she said. Death would have similar knowledge to hers, but there were aspects he was better versed in, obviously. “And I want to keep this as quiet as possible.”
It wasn’t something anybody would truly find out for a while, if she played her cards right. “We still have time to figure it out,” she said, not really agreeing or denying it. “Besides, now I’ve really got the best on it.” She gave him a half a smile as she said it.

unlikelyduo:
Then why were they there and he was here? He wanted so badly to ask. Compassion. Something a demon shouldn’t even have. She’s saying he had more than some of the angels. Wasn’t that a little funny? Kind of? Maybe not. He was so confused about what he should be doing or what he shouldn’t be. After all the world around him was ending as the Great Plan called for. As both sides wanted. Or he thought they wanted. Her being here talking to him like she was made him wonder. He always did. What was She really planning. She always played some kind of game. A game they didn’t understand the rules to. “Great lot of good that’s doing me.” He answered instead after a long beat. Cause yeah he could really do without having this. Not being so caught up in trying to stop everything from happening.
Keep faith? In what? What faith was he supposed to have? He was a demon. The didn’t do faith. Not really. Maybe in themselves? Did she mean Azirphale? He was such a clever bastard when he wanted to be. But sometimes he could be so dumb. There she went again. Riddles and being so vague he wasn’t sure if she meant to help him or not. Maybe she was trying. “You threw me out before. Why am I so important now? I wasn’t when I was an angel. We did already point out I’m not a very good demon. Demons aren’t supposed to do compassion.” You even said I had more than some angels.
“It seems to have done you well to me, but I may have a biased opinion.” And she did. Crowley’s compassion had saved lives, and it would save the world if things went right. But she wouldn’t go too deep into that right now. She didn’t want the world to end, no matter what either side thought. She only wanted to cut things off between Heaven and Hell as completely as she could so Earth would no longer hang in the balance between the two sides. “I think you just lack a clear view of what you’ve done in the past,” she told him.
“I didn’t really set strict guidelines for who would stay in Heaven and who would be cast out. It was a war, and it was as simple as who was on the side against me,” she admitted. “I didn’t want all of you to fall. But I couldn’t very well let you stay in Heaven. Whether you were good at being a demon or not. It’s because you’re not good at it that you play such an important role in this, Crowley. The same reason Aziraphale does. Neither one of you fits properly into the mold of demon or angel. The two of you see more in the world around you than Heaven and Hell combined.” The two of them were as close to human as any of her children ever could be. “I need you to keep that mindset as things move forward. Stay who you are, not who hell thinks you are. The two could not be further from each other, and the distinction is very important for what’s to come.”

A short drabble based on the thread with @myowndevising ^_^ (Please don’t reblog unless you are them!)
He hadn’t told Her where he was going but luckily he hadn’t needed to either. With Her vessel having taken the damage that it did, She had to slowly recover like a normal human and as such, needed to sleep like one as well. While Valentine enjoyed sleeping as well, he had more important things to do that night than do something his body didn’t actually need to function.
The (fallen) angel had used some of his contacts to find out more about the place where he had found Her and the person who owned it. Every detail he had learned had disgusted him. He knew very well that humanity had their good points but this human being didn’t seem to have any of them. Either way, they deserved what was coming for them.
Darkness was terrifying and how much it could be, they would get to experience first hand.
In the end it was laughably easy to catch them but then again, when it was dark and your very being was created from said darkness, it was pretty easy moving in it and using it to your advantage.
Once he had them, he showed them exactly why you shouldn’t mess with the few people Valentine Eveningstar truly cared about, especially if that person was God herself. Oh, don’t worry, he didn’t kill them (but he was sure they wished he had). After having seemingly spend an eternity in darkness - but had actually been just a few hours - with all sorts of creatures for company, Valentine had finally taken their sight so they would have to live in his domain for forever.
He landed home with a soft flutter of wings just as the first rays of sunshine peaked through the windows of his home, a satisfied expression on his face. He wouldn’t tell Her of what he had done, she wouldn’t approve anyways but he felt better knowing that there would be one less threat to a person who meant the world to him…

“Oh, I don’t know. You kicked me out of heaven, how many years ago now? It’s hard to know what your reasoning is for anything, really.” Not when she didn’t talk to anyone. Especially not any of the demons scuttering around in the basement. “Wouldn’t be surprising if the next thing you thought to do was smite me for some… inconvenience. So, what makes this visit worthwhile? I hope you’re not looking for a nice little chat, because seems I’ve already met that quota for today.”
“I didn’t make any decisions on who fell. Your decisions were what led to your fall. It’s been a long time, but you still don’t see that I didn’t pick and choose who would fall,” she remarked. She had to fight not to roll her eyes at his comments, wondering if that was really what he thought. “Why would I come all the way to Earth to smite you if I could have done it with not even a half of a thought? I did want to talk to you, and no, not just a nice little chat. Are your quotas all met for any type of conversation, or just any kind I might want to have?”

“You don’t do visits. Of any kind. You don’t even send letters. Or reply to calls. But how could you? What with all the people talking at you about all their problems, and what they pray will go well for them.” She was far to busy ignoring them, and playing games with their lives instead of actually caring. “Now, if you’re going to smite me, I’d get it over with so you could continue on with your divine day.”
“You’re right, I don’t. Not often, at least. But sometimes I think it’s necessary. Or worthwhile.” She wasn’t entirely sure why she was here to see him, of all people. She wasn’t sure if it would be worthwhile in the end of it all, but she still wanted to do it, even if he wasn’t happy with her. “So that’s what you think I’m here to do? Smite you? Why exactly would I want to smite you? Did you do something smite-worthy that I’m not aware of?”

She sighed at the use of the name, clearly not mean to be sincere in any way. Not that she could blame him for his bitterness. He had every right to be cross with her, but she had hoped that he wouldn’t. “Well, at least I’m starting this off knowing exactly where we stand,” she replied. “I doubt you’ll take friendly visit as a response, am I right?”

“Mother,” Azazel greeted coldly. As a demon, her energy was unmistakable to him. It was the true essence of light and love. The things demons apparently lacked. Still, looking at here, he didn’t feel as though the love she emitted was true. Not for all things at least. Certainly not for him. “To what do I owe the displeasure after so many years?”

potentesgratia:
“I–” There was shock at first, from the Archangel; upon seeing Her again ( so suddenly ). Heaven hadn’t had time to prepare, least of all Michael themself. Not that anything was ever out of place, and it would look as impeccable as it had the day it was created. Michael and Gabriel ensured that.
A pause, recollecting themself, before Michael smoothly smiled, suddenly appearing much more at ease ( any worry was simply shoved under the rug – Michael knew they were doing a good enough job; what else were they designed to do, but that ? ).
A considering tilt to their head. “To…observe?” Was that something they were supposed to do? Memory ran back, trying to search for some sort of order that would give them that answer. “I…haven’t.” Was that wrong ? “When I visit earth, it is with the intention to do something. The last extended amount of time I spent on Earth was in the 20th century.” Upon which Michael did more than simply perform blessings, and lived amongst the humans, but it was still done with the intention to protect. “Should I…have done so?”
She didn’t care that Michael was unprepared. They handled it quite well, especially considering how long it had been since she had actually visited Heaven. And in the past, it had usually involved a task, or something that was coming. The last time had been to inform them of her son that was to be born on Earth.
She wondered what would have happened if she had announced that she would be coming today.Talking alone with Michael would have been much harder to achieve, no doubt.
She nodded, giving them a slight smile. “Yes, to observe. I do quite a lot of watching - not just Earth - but it’s not the same if you’re not really there, I’ve noticed.” That was part of the reason she was there. Seeing her angels here was different from things being filtered through the Metatron, or reports of what was happening. There was no tone, no emotion to be seen (not that angels expressed them much anyway). “Oh, no, don’t worry. It’s not what’s expected of you. I was simply curious. How long were you on Earth for?”
