I really do spend so much time talking about Ran.... I really believe there would be no canon without Ran.......

Ran is the existence which underpins the entire franchise.

for some reason this idea that there is something distinctly 2000's about (detco) kaitou kid is an idea which has lingered for a few days and refused to give me any answers when i ask questions

made good progress on summer2,

Sleight needs half a week to sit again so will most likely switch to AZero next.

Also I think what people are drawn to about Ran is that oftentimes she should be sad but instead she is a fighter who is unafraid to directly face the concept of sadness.....

Some late night movie thoughts:

M25 and M27 work very hard to capture the essence of "detectives cut through things that are full of sadness" which permeates a lot of the early/old school/first gen movies.

The earliest movie that M22 resembles is M8- on a surface level they look quite different, yes. narratively and structurally is where they have resemblance, think about the flow of the story.

I would argue M27 is more similar to M2 than M7. M2 puts in a lot of effort to pull out elements which were glossed over in canon at the time. Meanwhile M7 in the context of the canon at the time seems to be almost like a fanfic.....

Update: it's going well

Finally consolidated all the pieces of Sleight into one page for the final writing/editing phase... it's currently 6.7k, I expect the update should be around 7.4k once it is completely finished.

There is a lot to get done, still, but finally........ it's making it. Finally.

It's been a long journey to get here.

Cleaned up some more published fics (Agent & Summer2). There is a lot I want to finish cleaning for AZero as well before the draft of the next update passes 75% complete. That will be done in the upcoming weeks/month.

The first fic I will update after this break still looks like Sleight. That one is still the closest to being finished. There's a small possibility Agent might overtake it?- the chapters are shorter and it generally doesn't need as much checking. Sleight is just complicated in general.

I'd like to shorten the chapters for Summer2 again so that it doesn't take months and months again.

I continue to have no idea when things are going up........ let's find out together.

Everything is still being chipped on. I finished scenes in Sleight and recently fixed the outlines for Agent since that happened to be convenient. It's going....... going.

Around 1 week off from updating Sleight. (2 weeks if worst case scenario)

"proper" is a little loaded in the sense I don't know what it is yet myself.

I think a lot of the meandering nature which detco canon is built on, it's the strength of the canon, and it's also what is contributing to a lot of the discontent many fans of shinran are feeling.

There is a clean and elegant way to resolve the misalignments... the outline of that path is something I can faintly see.

But I have not walked that path yet so I don't know what it is.

I would like to, someday. They're both very important to people, Ran and Shinichi.

thinking again about how i should write a proper shinran fic after things

I have been reading orv and orv fanfictions lately, at 90% of the novel and passing 1 million words in fic. There is a lot about that writing style that resembles the kind of writing that I have been pursuing as much as there is elements which do not fit in my writing . Overall it is a very blessed experience for me, like a masterclass.

The canon uses a particular structure which is very clean and that structure does all the lifting. It has a naturally dynamic flow, is easy to build, and is easy for readers to identify what is important and what ought to be absorbed.

It has some weaknesses related to pacing and a few times I am not convinced in the execution of a scene. That said, this being its weakness only highlights the structure's effectiveness. It is so easy to use. When it works, it works magnificently. Use it in the right situation for right purpose, any shortfall is an easy cost to pay.

The fic reading is both because I have a lot on my mind and because I am fascinated how people have consciously (or unconsciously) incorporated (or not incorporated) it into their own writings.

Final part of Sleight is finally close to completion. The remaining scenes' main dialogue is all in, all is left to flesh them out and then run some edit passes.

I say it a lot (maybe not on this blog) that I consider Ran the most important character in AZero......... her and Shin-chan's lives are so shaped around each other, it is impossible to properly characterise Shin-chan without paying the right amount of respect on Ran.

It is a blessing (canon would not be the same without their bond) and a struggle (I still have not fully managed to find a way to write it easily).

Something I have been thinking about is how to update the storyline of AZero a little. A reason I started it is that there felt like a void of "plot heavy recent canon fanfics"

except the unexpected hiatus means now I am getting 10 years behind (depending how you count it) and the new new canon is really good. I am so into it.

The dilemma is m24 is really difficult due to the Sera's but I think I can find a way. Just need to think more about it......
