It had been nearly a year of luteless evenings.
Jaskier had passed in the way lucky humans (exceedingly lucky, in his case) do; warm, safe, in his own bed, with those who cared for him nearby. He’d also had the decency to go during a cool spell in the summer, meaning they could all gather outside for the funeral, mourn him properly, the way he’d wanted: a going-away party.
It had been beautiful; his students from all over had paid tribute, sung songs, played their instruments; tales had been told, Jaskier’s favorite pieces had been played. The annual festival Jaskier had become a patron of made promise to keep his memory alive. Oxenfurt had announced they would set up a fifth scholarship in his name, Jaskier having established the first four himself. All those he held dear had been able to attend, and by the end, it had truly felt more like the going away party he’d wished for rather than a somber elegy. A long line of former lovers had come as well, which had been amusing, to say the least.
It had been… good. It was a good funeral. They’d done as he asked, and he would have been proud.
“Is there such thing as a good funeral?” Geralt had asked.
The wind has whispered through the trees for the rest of the year in ways that sounded suspiciously like the tuning of a lute, to Yennefer, at least. She was projecting, she knew. But it was hard not to, when so much of the little world they’d built for themselves at Corvo Bianco had involved Jaskier, down to the accent tiles in the kitchen, a brilliant touch of cornflower blue running along the walls. The hanging chair in the backyard, wicker and worn now, where he’d sit and play for them while they watched the sun. The library that was filled with so many of his own works, and so many of his favorites.
All of it felt like ghosts now. He had only barely left, but felt so far away already, and yet he was right there in everything they owned, touched, did, said.
“As good as a funeral can get,” Yennefer had replied.

Do you know how Nilfgaard took Cintra? Horrible storm. Fifty Skelligen ships sunk to the bottom of the sea, wrecked in that horrible fog. That was you.

i’m actually really upset at some of the responses i’m seeing people have wrt discussions about fandom racism in twn & witcher fandom at large though like. i want to be nice because i do understand the hurt but i want to say from the bottom of my heart: get over it.
i want you all to understand that if you’re a white person you can just log out or filter posts and these conversations will disappear. fans of color have zero recourse to avoid racist content because most of it is SUBTLE or simply does not register to white folks/nonblack poc. twn fandom has a huge racism problem and it is immediately apparent when the pushback to even the suggestion is this big. like.
YES it might hurt to be called out for racism, or find out a thing you liked/were doing is racist, or you follow someone who makes great art except they draw whitewashed fanart. It might feel like a personal attack but it really, really isn’t!
literally just take a breath and walk away for a bit. it is not about you personally. you are going to need to decenter your (white) feelings and start listening to what we are actually saying because i have had it up to HERE with y’all flattening our arguments to ‘if you don’t like x character you’re racist’ or whatever. if i dm you to tell you ‘hey, this was kinda racist’ i am doing it because i’d like to help us both out. not to be mean.
i’m giving y’all the benefit of the doubt because i DO understand that people fuck up sometimes. but i wish y’all would understand how fucking scary it can be to have these conversations because no matter HOW kindly i phrase it and how well i explain myself some people do not take it well!
it’s hurtful and it’s exhausting to then be told that actually, I’M the problem. i’m blowing things out of proportion. the people who disagree with me are just concerned about the (white) fans who might get pushed out of fandom because of these conversations. fandom isn’t real life and anyway if you do antiracist work irl it’s fine if you don’t care about fandom racism.
except i want to be able to exist in fandom without being bombarded by racist microaggressions, so i need y’all to do the bare minimum. fans of color have just as much a right to this space as white fans do. listen to what we’re saying!

All fandoms are, to an extent, fandoms of the idea of the media they revolve around, but some fandoms are so much about the idea of the media they revolve around and so little about that media as it exists in the world that they always seem mildly scandalised when reminded what the ostensible subject of their fandom is actually like.
