Op likely had a different conversation in mind, and it definitely applies to a lot of media and their fandoms, but I see this with Arcane regarding Caitlyn's choice to use chemical gas to capture Jinx

There's a thing that happens with writing sometimes where the intent of the story runs up against the reality of the story, and this is where a lot of really terrible conversations about stories come from.

For example, a story sets up a hard choice that a character has to make, but doesn't sufficiently set up why this choice needs to be made, or why it's a binary. There are different ways to read this:

The character is making a choice, got it

The character is making a choice, and it simply did not occur to them that there was a third option

The character is making a choice, and they considered the third option but rejected it off-screen

The character is making a choice, and the fact that they see this as a binary is an important aspect of reading their character

The writers screwed up

The writers were being expedient

The writers were simply not interested in having this choice be justified by the text

And the big problem is that people get into a conversation about the hard choice, and then don't ever reconcile that they're having different conversations. They haven't agreed on the frame they're arguing in, and might not realize that they're in different frames at all, and everyone just talks past each other for ages.

(I think that this post might have originally been about some particularly insipid conversation I was reading, but then it sat in drafts for long enough that I'd forgotten.)

I don't think I'm ever gonna get to drawing out this one dream I had of Silco and Sevika.

It's so funny tho cause Silco wtf??

But anyway,

Basically Silco and Sevika are at a grocery store (like the one pictured, but I was thinking of large grocery stores in largely Latino areas for some reason) and the two are going grocery shopping at a modern supermarket for some reason. They don't have a cart so they're holding the groceries themselves.

For some reason they asked a grocery employee about male pregnancy ??

(Silco is trans in this dream btw and Sevika knew and accepted him as he was)

Dream convo

Sevika: "How can he get pregnant? He hasn't slept with a woman."

Random Employee: ". . . You don't need a whole (Female body??) (man x woman??) to get pregnant"

And Silco was like. . . Oh shit.

And Sevika was like "??" Until she realized that he probably got pregnant by Vander and she was like "WTF?!?!" Cause Silco hated Vander yet he went and slept with a man who almost murdered him.

She gave him such a judgy look lol—partially for getting pregnant over some one night stand but mostly over him likely getting pregnant by Vander of all people

(neither knew if Vander was the baby daddy or not)

They went about their ways after that little convo with Sevika sighing in disappointment and finished up their grocery shopping right as some group of teenage white boys ifkyk were heard opening the sliding doors to the grocery store section they were in, walking around and looking obnoxious

Dream ended with Silco hiding two cartons of chocolate milk in his arms, at first holding it in his arms like one would a baby then holding one by the top of the carton and hiding the other one in other groceries he was holding

Just to not give away that he's ftm in front of a passing group of rowdy teenage boys/young guys.

*holding it in his arms like one would a baby but obvs a cis man wouldn't hold a bottle like that. . . At least that's what he was thinking, which is why he held it differently and then hid one of the cartons cause also a cis man wouldn't need that much chocolate milk*

He glared at one of the teenage boys to scare them off (on the inside he was feeling really insecure and unsure if he'd be clocked as trans) and that's when I woke up.

Yeah, it was kind of a weird dream, but thinking about it it's really funny cause I was trying to dream of Steb or Viktor by sleeping to edits of them but Silco was in a few edits and I decided I wouldn't mind dreaming of him and. . . I got my wish ig LMAOOOOO

Okay I had a terrible idea last night and am sending it to you.

Fish. Mech.

As in a little mech, controlled by a fish.

Which immediately leaves me with the question: what kind of user interface could a fish reasonably use? Can they bite buttons? Is this more of a pull-string situation?

I am DELIGHTED to tell you that someone already invented this.

there have been a few experiments where a fish was given control of a wheeled vehicle and they turned out to be surprisingly good at understanding how to use it. in one experiment the fish consistently managed to drive toward a food reward.

the interface is just a camera - it registers what corner/edge of the tank the fish is closest to and drives in that direction.

the next step, obviously, is to add a grappler arm the fish can activate by looking up.
