MUMBAI DAIRY – TRAVELLING WITH MY FAVOURITE COMPANION – A DUFFLE BAG
A trip to Mumbai means travelling in crowded areas, humid weather and laying on the beaches to name a few. Along in this trip, I found my best travel companion; a Trendy Duffle bag that is rugged and strong, just the way I like.
The city that never sleeps, India’s economic capital; Mumbai had been on my bucket list for quite long. So, I packed my stuff in suitcase and kept essentials in my new favourite duffle bag and moved along to Mumbai
Once I reached my dream city, I started with south Mumbai as I am fascinated with Bollywood and South Mumbai holds a lot of private shooting studios. I packed my day’s essentials in my duffle and was good to go. My Duffle Bag is made of heavy duty canvas fabric that is wax treated making it more rugged and strong and also resistant to water. It has soft cotton Webbing Shoulder Strap which is adjustable in length making it easier to carry conveniently across shoulder.
My first stop was Crawford Market. I started with breakfast and brought some exotic fruits to snack along my way. I started shopping with my favourite cake making equipment, got some toys too for back home. My next stop was the famous chor bazaar, it is a must travel experience when visiting Mumbai. The market starts in morning itself and was more crowded than I expected. Luckily I was carrying a duffle bag that I can zip up to close and pull in front of me, keeping my essentials secure and my hands free.
Now, for the rest of the day, I had booked a bollywood tour. I visited dubbing studios, Wall of Fame gallery, and the Bollywood Museum, which boasts of a wide array of costumes used in famous Bollywood movies that you can actually try on.  As I clicked lots of photographs, I realised that my stuffed duffle bag was making a style statement in itself.  Few people, in fact checked with me for my bag. After the tour I went for sightseeing of famous bollywood celebrity’s house in and around Mumbai.
Next day, I planned for beach tours. The duffle bag is high on utility with two external zip pockets on the sides and one internal zip pocket on the inside fabric lining. I kept my valuables in internal zip pocket and started my day by visiting Chowpatty Beach. I had a calming time sitting on the sandy beach. Another good feature of my duffle bag is that it’s coated canvas is water resistant. I easily removed any collected water on the bag and further moved towards Linking Road, a street shopping paradise. I loaded lots of western wear apparels, footwear and accessories in my duffle, a result of my bargaining spree. Satisfied, I wanted to board a local train too, so again securing my duffle in front of me; I was able to board train till Dadar.
Dadar Kabutarkhana is famous for maharashtrian sari, utensils and cosmetic products at low price. The market was full of small as well as big silk saree showrooms which always remain crowded by locals.
As there was so much left to explore in the city, I quickly made my way for Gateway of India, the magnificent monument on the shores of Arabian Sea. My duffle is just the right size, so I packed in a few snacks along with few accessories like cap, sunscreen and a hand towel. My last stop remained a relaxing stroll along Marine Drive, Mumbai’s most well-known waterfront avenue, enjoying the shoreline of Back Bay on a cobbled street lined with trees.
My duffle bag remained my close companion in this trip and I am glad that even after being overfilled, I could easily carry it over my shoulder for the entire day due to its broad adjustable strap. It was so durable that I did’t have to worry about being in a crowded place, or travelling in local trains or taking a stroll on the famous marine drive or enjoying myself on sandy beaches. With its rugged printed details, metal studs at the bottom, usage of broad printed shoulder strap; I even caught my fashionistas attention.
I will be using this great duffle bag for my upcoming trips and sharing my experiences with you all. Thanks

PGDM 2016-18 Interim placement Report
PGDM 2016-18 Interim placement Report
Strong growth in PGDM placements in 2017, at end of Placement week.
With year-on-year growth in placements, Goa Institute of Management (GIM) is known to better its best. This year looks no different: GIM is again poised to script a strong ending to its PGDM placement initiative.
Marquee companies like McKinsey, EY, JP Morgan & Chase, Amazon, GEP, ITC, Reckitt Benckiser, Kraft Heinz, United Breweries, Nestle, Gartner, and Philips Lighting (to mention a few, in no particular order) have already hired from PGDM Batch 2016–18. In addition to 34 old / existing companies, this year 18 new companies have already visited the campus and made offers to the students (numbers relate to only final placement and not companies who had offered PPO / PPI). Separately, PPOs have seen a steep rise of 78%, with current 41 as against the previous year’s 23.
Alongside IT / ITES and BFSI sectors, companies from Consulting and FMCG / FMCD domains have increased their footprints this year. With 20 LPA as the highest salary so far, a quick look at the average numbers: top 20 students – 15.72 LPA; top 50 students – 13.75 LPA; and top 100 students – 11.83 LPA. While 52.48% students have received offers above 10 LPA, the average salary is around 10.61 LPA. Commenting on the placement trend at GIM this year, Professor Venkatesh Naga D, Placement Head, shares, “The trend is both positive and encouraging. The industry seems to appreciate the talent pool at GIM. They have shown eagerness to strengthen the collaboration to attract talent in their recruitment drives in future. ”
The high level of interest points to GIM’s constant focus on diversity, pedagogy, and curriculum led by innovative programs like Give Goa and Campus Connect. GIM’s competitive edge is also enhanced through prestigious international linkages and Centers of Excellence that focus on research, social sensitivity, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Significantly GIM is among 13 institutes (out of 3048 applications) chosen by NITI Aayog to set up the Atal Incubation Centre.
With the recruitment drive in full swing, there is every indication that placements for the current year should scale a higher notch and sustain the year-on-year growth.

Seeing though the global lens- Hindu School of Architecture students spent a day with Dr. Nezar AlSayyad of UC Berkeley
Seeing though the global lens- Hindu School of Architecture students spent a day with Dr. Nezar AlSayyad of UC Berkeley
Dr. Nezar AlSayyad, Professor of Architecture, Planning, Urban Design and Urban History from UC Berkeley visited Hindu School of Architecture on 16th December, 2017 and engaged the students over a riveting session around “History in Urbanism.” Dr. AlSayyad started his talk by bringing home a beautiful concept- “the world is all about your frame of mind!” Being the renowned academician in Architecture, Dr. AlSayyad derives his inspiration by traveling across the geography- and his visit to India has seen him travel avidly from the desert to the hills, the plateau to the forests, everywhere! It is based on his vast experience; he encouraged the young architects of Hindu School of Architecture (HSA) to take the advantage of the strategic location of the school and try think of how to make every small or big space meaningful for the world.
“Architecture was fundamentally meant to uplift the poor and middle class section of the society. However, that message got eventually lost in the rat race of the 21st century and architecture became a predatory profession- a profession that started serving the interest of the client at the expense of general public and ordinary people,” elaborates Dr. AlSayyad thoughtfully. His talk brought home the idea as to just how important Ethics as a concept is- for architects to imbibe. He further sheds light on how HSA and all architecture students need to be extremely careful about striking the right balance across “physical, social, environmental and economical sustainability.”
Dotted with anecdotes, Dr. Nezar AlSayyad’s talk became even more interesting when he urged the audience to think and ask themselves- “to what extent can you migrate to influence your design?” He explains how the usage of instruments can limit one’s way of thinking and creativity. Therefore, it becomes extremely important to “free yourself from the fetters of instruments and give room to imaginations.” While the acclaimed professor of Architecture draws his inspiration from the places he travels, he also thinks that films and movies are a great way of learning about the world and gathering information. “Do keep your eyes on what you see in the backdrop of the subjects,” and indeed, that can broaden the scope of young architects’ mind to a great extent.
However, how does talk like these help young architects develop broader perspectives around the subject of Architecture? “With initiatives such as these where we get to hear from global faculty, we get the chance to see how architects operate in other countries. We get to literally hear from the horse’s mouth about the global practices and pick important insights of the global industry,” says Bhanupriya Sharma of 3rd year, B.Arch., Hindu School of Architecture.

MBA or PGDM - making sense of what suits you best
Tumblr media
With more than 4000 institutions in India offering PGDM and MBA and, in some cases, dual options, you are spoilt for choice and often confused by variety and number. Taking aspirants (often fresh graduates) for granted, at times institutions do not share full technical details. The result: young candidates try to make sense by reputation and ranking and, sometimes, by recommendation of online sites who evaluate institutions primarily on placement salary (called “average salary”, which is nothing but cost to the company or CTC, arrived at by dividing total package in rupee value by batch size). These seem to be the main drivers even today, alongside faculty, infrastructure, pedagogy, research, and industry connect. Apart from assessing how much one will earn (ROI) in relation to money invested, aspirants must look at a particular program’s value addition. Rather than taking average salary as the defining factor, you need to choose based on a set of parameters.
Looked at practically, it does not matter much whether you are enrolled in an institution ranked among the top twenty business schools or the top fifty. Out of the 4000-odd recognized business schools in India, if you get admitted to any one among the top 2%, have the right attitude, and gain knowledge and skill, then you should be able to secure a package better than the average salary of the batch. You should select the B-School based on how you fit into the program rather than getting attracted by the quality of the institution. Try not to get swayed by suave marketing conducted by institutions or the reputational legacies they exude. Your choice should be based on the quality of management education, the stream (specialization) you would like to pursue, and the demonstrated performance of the institution in that particular area. A postgraduate degree suited to your needs should be the guiding light, not market perception.
Every year witnesses an overabundance of new institutions and models in India. Many newly created IIMs are picking up, even if they are in no way near some of the autonomous private business schools. This is purely because of brand IIM. There are several entrance examinations like CAT, XAT, GMAT, NMAT, SNAP, MAT, CMAT, and ATMA. Every year a million plus aspirants participate in entrance tests. This clearly indicates growing demand. While some B-Schools with high academic standards are not able to admit students, many others are not able to fill their sanctioned capacity. This creates mismatch in the market. This also raises eyebrows about the gaps in the quality of conducted tests, which may be part of the selection process for PGDM with a cut-off for accepted entrance examinations and GD / PI processes. To address this gap, the government needs to look at a few quality entrance examinations. We should try to refrain from mass producing management postgraduates without employable skills. Alongside, we need to review University MBA, which runs programs in large numbers, often without placement assistance.
It is important for an aspirant to understand the basic difference between these programs and their regulatory and legal standing. This will help you to understand the selection process and to invest wisely for the next two years and beyond.
Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is popular and continues to be in demand. The primary reason is that it was offered by the IIMs, which have great brand value. This, in spite of the fact that many of the new IIMs are not at par with top private business schools which offer better quality across three parameters (Input, Throughput, and Output) alongside market capitalization or demand. PGDM courses have better market acceptability for recruitment and higher salary. In PGDM programs, both IIMs and autonomous private business schools can design their own curriculum, pedagogy, and evaluation method tailored to contemporary industry and corporate needs. Interestingly, most privately run autonomous institutions seem to be following the pattern of IIMs, apart from some value addition in creating employment opportunities for graduating students. Most PGDM aspirants are looking at government recognitions like AICTE and accreditations like National Board of Accreditation to choose an institution, if it is not granting an MBA degree. Now, with the new IIM Bill in place, IIMs are going to offer an MBA degree. Clarity is needed as to whether autonomous private business schools will also be allowed to grant MBA degree.
As an aspirant, you should know the PGDM must have “MBA equivalence”. This is granted only if the institution has an affiliation with or approval from Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The AICTE approval process mandates that AIU authorization is possible only if an institution has NBA or an International Accreditation. Only few institutions offering PGDM have one or more of these requirements in place. PGDM graduating students cannot pursue higher studies abroad; for example, a Ph.D. course, if that institution does not have AIU sanction which is again subject to NBA approval. This implies a possible risk aspirants are exposed to in such PGDM institutions. In recent years (from 2010 onwards) there are noticeable uncertainties in AICTE approval, which needs to be obtained through Extension Process in the Supreme Court. For this, Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI) is fighting the case for private autonomous PGDM institutions. Proposals for an independent regulatory body like Higher Education Regulatory Authority (HERA) are yet to be finalized. An aspirant must keep these points in mind while selecting an institution.
With IIMs offering MBA degrees, apart from universities and deemed universities, there would be questions in the minds of aspirants. Unless there is a level playing field for PGDM, diploma-granting autonomous business schools may face a tough situation. While selecting autonomous PGDM-granting institutions, evaluate all these points – including AICTE and AIU approvals to consider MBA equivalence; national accreditations like NBA and NAAC; and international accreditations like AMBA, AACSB, EQVIS, etc. – to make a balanced assessment.
On the other hand, if you are interested in an MBA-degree-granting institution, you must look at value additions like dual degree, postgraduate certificate in management along with MBA degree, or skill exchange programs offered through tie-ups with international institutions. This will help you get the edge in a highly competitive environment. An MBA-degree-granting institution with the flexibility to create curriculum with industry input may prove better compared to a PGDM institution driven by numbers and often insensitive to statutory and industry needs. Try not to rely on myth, fantasy, and hearsay while investing your time and money. Do comprehensive research and analyse the available data and information. Think and act wisely.

Why “Being an Architect” is one of the lucrative professions today!
Dr. Rashmi Ashtt, Principal – Director, Hindu School of Architecture, Sonipat is a highly respected and much awarded name in the world of Architecture and Urban Planning. The PhD. holder in Urban Planning under University Grants Commission has over two decades of experience in the field and has worked on more than 100 projects. In a conversation with Dr. Ashtt, she explains why more and more students are opting to build formidable career in Architecture, with each passing year-
A gigantic world- waiting to be shaped up
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) anticipated jobs for architects to increase 7% from 2014 to 2024. The world might do away with information technologists, accountants, consultants, lawyers or media strategists, but how can it not want infrastructure? There has never been, never will be a dip in demand for Architects- as long as civilization exists. You need hospitals, bridges, homes, offices, factories, schools, roads, airports, banks and what not! Unless there are people to design or plan them, how will the world turn its rounds.
Architecture is a profession that allows endless room for creativity
In May 2015, the median annual salary of architects, except landscape and naval architects, was $76,100, according to the BLS. India has been seeing a steady rise of female professionals entering the space, gradually. The number of women architects has increased in the past 5 years from 34% to 40%. Reason being, the profession is not just safe from gender point of view but gives tremendous respect to creative thinking. As the popular saying goes, “architecture is a fine combination of Art and Science.”
Architects are getting paid handsomely, everywhere
While developed nations have giant companies recruiting young and dynamic architects straight from their Architecture School, India and other developed nations are showing equal promise in terms of placements. The average CTC a Bachelor in Architecture (B.Arch.) draws in India, even as a complete fresher is approximately 2.5 lacs p.a.  The industry is gradually recognizing the kind of freshness young professionals are bringing to the profession and are thereby seeking to hire them from reputed Architecture schools of the country. Hindu School of Architecture witnessed almost 20+ companies hiring young architects across various profiles in a year.
Architecture is a glamorous profession
An architect’s importance in the world history has always been undeniable. If you are meaning to pursue architecture from a reputed school, you will be forged through a very rigorous curriculum that would stretch for 5 years prior to your receiving a degree in B.Arch. from the Council of Architecture (COA), India. Your curriculum will expose you to a global breadth with understanding of international standards. This in turn helps you in networking with expert architects from all across the world; often giving you opportunities to intern with some of the leading architectural firms of India and overseas. Adding to all of it is the charm of always being on top of materials, form, massing, lighting, history, origin, etc.- no matter which building/ city you visit- you always know it all!
You can be your own boss as an Architect today
With the whole biuzz around start-ups in India, an architect is probably one such human being who is best fit to start his/her own endeavor at any point in time in life. You do not always need “A” projects to outshine others. Even smaller projects can help you kick-start your independent career as your own boss. You can enter contests and win commissions for major projects by yourself- or with smaller teams.

Studying Lyrics Management within the Goa Institute of Management’s MBA classroom
Tumblr media
If you have underestimated the power of Music influencing the purchasing behaviors of customers- well, you are overlooking a serious ingredient in Marketing. Appropriate tempo, right volume, and correct genre have changed games for a number of retail outlets since the 50s. For instance, fast tracks are flops in departmental stores. Why? They make people move at higher pace. Slow music tracks don’t do well in smaller cafeterias or snack joints. People tend to get too comfortable. To understand the Psychology of Music is serious business and at Goa Institute of Management, Dr. Divya Singhal takes a super interesting elective with the name of Lyrics Management.
What exactly this elective is all about?
Developed by Dr. Divya, Goa Institute of Management adopted Lyrics and Management as an elective in the year 2008. With cutting-edge innovation being adopted by Sales and Marketing teams all across the world and across varied segments, Lyrics Management allows students to think on a wider plane. The course deploys the trope of jingles, rhymes, soft music, loud music, genre, tempo, and various other components to draw parallel with trends and buying patterns of consumers. To explain the elective further, Dr. Divya says “A manager needs a deep appreciation of society and it’s evolving cultural values- what better than to connect with music. It is necessary to focus on the intricate details that actually impact a brand in significant ways and music, definitely, is one such thing which anyone can relate to. Airtel for instance! Can you deny A.R. Rahman’s contribution to the brand?”
She further explains- “we need to understand one thing that music branding has increasingly become an important focus these days. It is proven fact that one does not have to listen to hear, whereas one does need to be looking in order to see, hence brands are making their sonic identity Brands are creating SoGo (Sonic Logo) or MoGo (Music Logo). SoGo or MoGo are thin slices of non-verbal brand information and are short and distinctive melody mnemonics. And, the course orients students on this line.”
More importantly, this elective covers the discussions on music and its role in social movements, team building and belongingness in the organizational context, and also in creating soft power in international relations.
How are students graded when they opt for this elective?
The course involves the learner into intense class activities, making interpretations and presenting write-ups to be able to get the credit. The grading components are assignments, class activities, academic presentation, and end term.
For instance, one evaluation component of this particular course is Critique Assignment in which Dr. Divya asks students to investigate any one of the related research papers. There are many academic papers available on issues ranging from retail and music, music and advertising, the role of music, music, and learning, music, and emotions, music and social change, sonic branding, etc. Submissions are being evaluated on the basis of application and integration of course concepts, the organization of paper and originality of analysis. In addition, students earn higher grades for successfully integrating information from additional sources and/or related articles.
In another evaluation component which is an academic study report and presentation component titled as ‘Insights’; students work in groups and undertake the comprehensive study on relevant topics.
How are GIM students outshining through the course?
Every year there are students who choose interesting topics. Once a group presented on Nursery Rhymes and their immense specificity. In the last batch one group did their study on music and its impact on human behavior and health, another did on music and sports. Dr. Divya adds to the list further with a broad smile on her face- “one of my PGDM PT student who was part of my elective course did her dissertation on- “Study on Outlook Of Marketers, Advertisers And Managers Towards Music: Seizing New Trends And Opportunities.”
Needless to say, Lyrics Management of Goa Institute of Management is gradually going a long way!

Prime Minister Office (PMO) gives clean chit to K.Siva Prasad, IAS
Tumblr media
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi who is known to maintain zero tolerance to mischief and corruption, equally emphasizes on ensuring that honest and well-intentioned officers are not harassed. As the case of K. Siva Prasad, IAS falls in the second category, PMO recently dropped all the charges against K.Siva Prasad, IAS after it was found that he was falsely implicated.
PMO took note of the fact that Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed all the cases registered by CBI. The High Court ruled that Case has been initiated without any legal basis nor foundation and K. Siva Prasad, IAS has been unjustifiably subjected to undeserving prosecution by CBI. High Court further observed that Grave injustice has been caused to K. Siva Prasad IAS the then GM, FCI.
The court observed that K.Siva Prasad, IAS who made all-out effort to introduce a novel system to arrest the corrupt practices, which has completely halted the practice of mixing substandard bags with good quality of rice, has been charge sheeted and the remarks of CMD about integrity of K.Siva Prasad, IAS has virtually fallen on deaf ears, said High Court in a detailed order.
A three-judge Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India dismissed the appeal filed by CBI against the order of Punjab and Haryana High Court, as Court apparently found that the issues raised in the arguments were properly discussed by Punjab and Haryana High Court which found that there is no merit in these issues.
PMO relied on the detailed inquiry conducted by CVC which exonerated K. Siva Prasad, IAS. CVC summoned all the record pertaining to the case and examined all the people who are involved in the entire process. It took note of the fact that false records were created by certain officials on the instruction of the then minister and the same were used against K. Siva Prasad, a Punjab cadre IAS officer.
The then CMD, FCI who appeared before CVC stated that " I was given to understand that the then MOS(Food) sought favors from Punjab and elsewhere all levels, which when refused at least by the senior levels led to the action that was taken. A note from him indicating irregularities at various places and dated 22.7.2005 is on record, which when countered effectively led to the escalation of the whole matter against K. Siva Prasad, IAS. This is corroborated by the speed with which action was taken, in a highly irregular manner bypassing all rules and regulations of disciplinary proceedings and natural justice. My dissent on the whole Govt. A process is on record which has been accepted and acknowledged by even the Hon'ble High Court of Punjab in the same matter and charges. As CMD, therefore, I have no hesitation in saying that the whole case against K. Siva Prasad, IAS is totally malafide, baseless and without application of mind by the Government "
Based on the record and evidence, CVC categorically concluded that these charges are baseless and motivated and recommended for dropping of all charges.
It's a known fact that PMO does 360 degrees review before any relief was given to an officer and it is believed that K. Siva Prasad, IAS cleared 360-degree assessment of PMO.
Keeping all these facts, Prime Minister ordered dropping of charges.

JGBS and ACCH to host two-day National Case Methodology and Case Writing Workshop
Tumblr media
AIMS Case Clearing House (ACCH) is holding a two-day (31 October and 1 November) National Case Methodology and Case Writing Workshop at Jindal Global Business School.
Aiming to enhance the understanding of case study approach in the learning process, the workshop will be helmed by Professor Philip Zerilo (Executive Director, Center of Management Practice, Singapore Management University) and Ms. Havovi Joshi (Head of Communications and Dissemination, Centre for Management Practice, Singapore Management University). Divided into two parts – Case Methodology and Case Writing and Publication – which include several sessions with experienced facilitators, the program would benefit academicians, researchers, and professionals.
The Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS) is the second largest network of management schools in the world. It founded the ACCH with the goal to build an ecosystem of case methodology and case writing among management institutions in the country. JGBS, known for its international academic collaborations and its emphasis on case study based learning, is the ideal partner for the workshop.
What can I learn?
The Case Studies sessions – teaching with cases and writing effective case studies – are designed to offer participants insights into the world of case studies as teaching and pedagogy. They can also learn more about planning and execution of successful case discussions. The Case Writing and Publication sessions focus on the art of case writing and case teaching. Here participants can go through several stages of case study draft and understand various elements of a good case study. They will also learn practical aspects like interviewing skills and developing the instructors’ manual and teaching note.
Who is it for?
The workshop is extremely timely considering the growing popularity of the case method of teaching. It will be of immense use to anyone interested in teaching, undertaking research, or writing cases for B-Schools.
What makes the workshop truly comprehensive and relevant is that it will take into account actual case studies and real-life scenarios to discuss issues and ideas. Participants will also know more about case selection criteria used by international publishing houses so that they can take their research to its logical conclusion. The program will create a huge knowledge sharing platform for academic institutions, teachers, researchers, professionals, and students to benefit from. The workshop will also offer opportunities to network and explore collaborative possibilities. In sum, anyone keen on learning more about case methodology and writing will have something engaging, interesting, and innovative to take away from the program.
