Awwww yeah! I'm glad you loved it.
SPOILERS AHEAD!
I think the fact Crosshair was able to just realize he could just be and exist without Avery is a plus.
He clearly is too in love with Avery to be ready to completely move on from her, yet. But I do believe he got closure in some aspects. He was able to realize that, yes, Avery would've forgiven him. That Avery understood and loved him for exactly who he was. The fact that he was able to fix the relationship he had with Layla was a huge boost too.
The Gym Membership - Part 57 (Crosshair)
Summary: Crosshair and Layla enter a new phase of their relationship
A/N: Hello Lovelies,
This is it. The final part for Crosshair.
Wow I can't believe I finally finished Crosshair's story. I know that this story may not go the way that some of you wished or hoped but thank you for taking the time to read, reblog, comment. It means a lot. I will try and work on the one-off, the what if Avery survived as soon as possible and then I'll work on Omega's section. I hope you all have had an amazing week, and enjoy your weekend.
Lots of love.
Warnings: Awkwardness, feelings of guilt, kiss, banter, grief. If I miss any warnings, please let me know.

I nodded as I took in what he said smirking at the story, “I take it Avery cooked?”
“Of course, who else could cut men down without any words or weapons.”
I giggled as I thought of her, “This is weird isn’t it?” I glanced over to Cross as I squeezed my cup of tea. The warmth that had once overwhelmed that tiny cup, had vanished and turned it lukewarm.
Crosshair rubbed his scalp and nodded “I won’t lie, it’s definitely odd and a little weird.” He took a deep breath, “Can I be honest?”
“Yeah, I think it’s best that we both are.”
He let out a long heavy sigh through his nose, “I think it’s safe to assume, we obviously find each other attractive.”
“Mhmm … yeah, I’d agree with that.”
“And …” he took a moment as he thought about what he wanted to say, “as much as I find you attractive, it is extremely hard … I mean I do make an effort not to… and I don’t …” he rubbed the back of his neck, “I don’t mean to but I can’t stop thinking about Avery every time I’m with you, or … compare you two. I’m sorry. I’m sure it’s not what you want to hear…”
“No, it isn’t.” I took in a shaky breath, “However, it’s the truth.” I smiled softly, “And in the end, we have to face facts, there’ll always be Avery between us. I may have not liked you when I first met you, Cross, but I have certainly grown to admire and respect you a great deal now.” I let out a soft chuckle, “I wanted our first date to be amazing …” I don’t know why but I felt a lump rising in my throat, “I wanted us to have these amazing deep conversations, to feel comfortable with one another, but it just seems like we have to work a lot harder than others to get there, and maybe … I don’t know, maybe we’re putting too much pressure on ourselves?”
“Maybe” Cross dragged his hand over his face, “or maybe, it’s guilt that’s keeping us from moving forward.”
“Could be. I mean I do feel like I’m trying to steal her spot, replace her in your heart.”
He turned to look at her, his hand reached out to stroke her arm, pulling her hand away from the cup she was gripping. He gently intertwined their fingers, as his thumb stroked the back of her hand slowly, “You’re not replacing her.”
“You trying to say you didn’t love her?”
“No. Of course, I loved her. I married her. What I’m trying to say is …” he shifted closer to Layla, “you’re two different people, and the way I feel for you, the way I look at you is different because you’re different from her. You’re unique and the way I feel about you is just as unique.”
I couldn’t help but huff a little in disbelief, “Who knew you were so sweet and romantic? Maybe if I wasn’t such a grade-A shrew, things could’ve been different between us from the start.”
“Possibly, but there’s no point in what-if’s. I learned a long time ago in the army, it doesn’t matter if you go left or you go right, you have to make a decision. And at the end of the day, it’s the decision we have to live with, regardless of the consequences. I mean let’s face it I wasn’t exactly faithful to Avery when she was in a coma.”
“True, but I know her, and Avery wouldn’t’ve held that against you. She would’ve understood it was your grief doing the talking … well not necessarily talking.” She smirked.
“Oh there was definitely no talking involved.” He smirked back. Silence fell between them as he looked at her hand, he gave it a gentle squeeze, “Layla, if you want to give this a go, I’m willing, and if you find it too difficult I understand that too.”
Crosshair waited for her to respond, and when she didn’t, he simply nodded, letting her hand go and stood. He was surprised the rejection didn’t hurt more, maybe it was because he pretty much figured this was the way things were going to go.
He grabbed his cold coffee and dumped it down the sink. She followed him with her own tea and the plate of snacks.
I watched him leave my side, my mouth wanting to open, to say something, to tell him he was wrong to think that I didn’t want him, that I wasn’t willing to try. Truthfully, I did want to try… I wanted to give us a chance. Regardless of how weird things may feel; but nothing came out of my mouth.
I followed him into the kitchen, placing the cup and plate of snacks on the kitchen counter.
A lot was running through his mind, but as he looked at Layla, one thought came through clear and vibrant. What did he see in her? Was it simply because she was his only connection to Avery? Or was it something else?
Our eyes met, as I slowly shifted to look at him. The way his warm brown eyes looked into mine, eyes that had suffered so much pain, eyes that had cried their share of tears from losing those he loved. Eyes that looked at me like I was actually there and not just a passing thought.
As the silence dawned on us, my eyes slowly drifted to those lips, lips that have probably kissed their share of other’s lips. Lips that were probably warm, soft, and sweet. Seemingly out of nowhere, courage ran through me, fuelling me as I closed the distance, and pressed my lips to his.
As soon as he felt her lips on his, he felt his heart thump loudly.
Their lips touched and where there should’ve been fireworks, there was …
Nothing.
Crosshair pressed his lips harder against hers, his lips moulding against her as he felt their lips shift. Yet, it felt … weird. Way too weird. Too wet. Too awkward. Too forced.
While our lips danced, all I could think was ‘how did this guy get so many dates? He kisses like a teenager.’ I held on to his waist, trying to inch myself closer, hoping that would help, but the kiss just went from bad to worse somehow. His teeth bumping against my own.
He tried to tilt his head, only for the both of them to bump noses. He tried to shift again and poked her eye. He pulled back and this time he decided to take the lead and kiss her, only to end up head-butting her.
“Mother…” he grumbled under his breath.
Silence filled the kitchen, as they both looked at each other while they each rubbed their own forehead.
As they locked eyes they both burst out laughing.
“That was weird… right?”
“Very.” Crosshair chuckled along with her, letting out a sigh as he leaned against the kitchen counter, his eyes focusing on Avery’s picture on the fridge. “Never quite had a kiss like that before; I mean I’ve kissed plenty of people and …” was there any point to finish the sentence. They both knew what it meant. “You know when I kissed Avery for the first time, it was a kiss unlike any kiss I’ve ever felt before.”
“What did it feel like?”
“Like coming home, but to a home I’ve never known before.”
I nodded as I leaned against the kitchen counter beside him, “Do you think maybe we are trying to force this despite how weird it feels because we think it’ll keep her here with us?”
“If Tech was here, that would definitely be his analysis.” He let out a chuckled sigh, “It’s also partly my fault, really I shouldn’t be comparing you both. If I was truly and completely interested in you, Avery shouldn’t come into this. Yet …”
“She does.”
He nodded.
“She does; for me too.” Her eyes focused on Avery’s picture, “She always strived to put my happiness ahead of hers, do you know that? I don’t know why. I never wanted that. Never expected it. But she did. I was talking to Howzer the other day…”
“Howzer?” Crosshair turned to look at her, smirking with a knowing smile, “Really?”
“It’s not like that.”
“Sure. Whatever you say.”
“It isn’t.”
“Okay, okay” he held up his hands, “so what did Captain Hot Stuff have to say?”
“Captain Hot Stuff?”
“What he isn’t?”
I tried not to smile but I failed miserably. As much as I wanted to deny it, Howzer was attractive, sweet, kind, incredibly attentive and always ready to listen whenever I talked to him.
“See you can’t even help that smile.” Crosshair stated as he poked her cheek.
I rolled my eyes, suppressing my smile, “Anyway … what I was going to say, was that he mentioned, since we both miss her that maybe we feel we never got a chance to repay her for all the love she showed us. When we both know, she gave us way more than we deserved.”
“Wait, Howzer said you didn’t deserve the love Avery showered on you?”
“No.” I shook my head, “What he meant was, we didn’t think we were deserving of the love she showered us with, and maybe I’m… us … we are trying to make it work with each other in a way to repay her for loving us. It’s a little crazy.”
“Well… it’s not the craziest theory I’ve ever heard.” Crosshair smirked, “Guess this means we’re friends huh?”
“Guess so.”
He rolled his eyes, smiling, “Great, just what I need, another friend.”
I laughed, as I bumped into his side, “Whatever you enjoy having me around.”
“Hmmm … yeah,” he smiled brightly, “I do. Now, let’s go back to this you and Howzer situation …”
I laughed, enjoying the banter that settled between us. I rested my head on his shoulder, “I’m glad you’re my friend, and I’m glad you made Avery happy.”
Crosshair nodded, putting his arm around her shoulder, “That’s what brothers are for; and truthfully, Howzer is … me and him have our own issues, but he’s a really good guy. And if he ever hurts you, tell me and I’ll beat the living shit out of him.”
Layla laughed as she and Crosshair stood in the kitchen talking about memories of Avery, joking and bantering, as they both realized they were happier being friends, then trying to force themselves into a romantic situation.
For the first time in a long time, Crosshair finally felt the weight of Avery’s injury, coma and death lift from his shoulders, and even though nothing would ever happen between him and Layla, he was happy knowing he had the respect of the one person Avery loved more than him.

I no longer know or care what actually is canon for Commander Fox thanks to this fandom ❤️🖤❤️🖤
My friend does not understand why I like commander fox. he's like "he had 5 minutes of screen time and everything he did was bad" ok sure you're right BUT have you considered that 1. he's sexy and 2. me and some people on tumblr have group hallucinated a personality for him and decided that the atrocities were NOT his fault

Hi lovelies! 💕
This is such a great idea and the story is already so good 👌🏻
So let's keep it going maybe with
18. How long has it been since i've slept?
Hope it fits 🫶🏻
Hello! We're back!!! Sorry for the delay in continuing this story. Sadly @firstofficerwiggles had a hellish semester last fall, but now it's on to a new semester and a new year and we're eager to bring you more of this tale...
The Commander & The Civvie, Chapter 7
Main Fic List | Chpt 6
Pairing: Commander Fox x female reader
Rating: T
Warnings: injuries, hospitalization, canon-style violence, Fox having emotions
Prompts: 18. How long has it been since I’ve slept?
42. Are you asking me out on a date?
How could we be here again?
Was this what it was like for her? Watching my face for any flinch, or holding my hand praying for any possible movement?
Fox rubbed his forehead, the anger within himself and the guilt overwhelmed him.
“You two are more alike than you realize.” Thorn stated as he passed him a caf.
“What the kriff are you talking about? She’s an idiot.”
Thorn glared at his Commander, “Don’t do that. Don’t be a jackass just because you feel guilty.”
Fox didn’t answer, taking a sip of his caf and putting it off to the side. His eyes drifting back to Starlight’s face.
“It wasn’t your fault.”
“Thorn, if you have nothing to do, I can find something for you.” He turned and glared at Thorn.
Thorn didn’t think twice, he held his hand up in the air and left the hospital room.
In the quiet of the hospital room, he focused back on your face. He shifted sitting on the bed beside you as his hand gently caressed your cheek. He held your hand tight against his chest, “Starlight …” his finger trailed over your forehead. “Why did you do that? You’re not supposed to be here. You’re not supposed to be hurt…” He fought back tears. “Please, Starlight. Cyar’ika, please wake up. Wake up, and yell at me. Give me your irritated look. Tell me that I’m being too much, that I need to calm down.” He pressed his forehead against hers, “Please wake up.”
How did everything go so wrong?
You stood there blinking, as Fox’s voice echoed again in your head. ‘Starlight. Have dinner with me.’
“Starlight?” Fox looked into your eyes, waiting for you to respond, “Starlight, the Senate doesn’t take this long to pass a bill.”
You blinked a few more times, as confusion crossed your face, “Wait… are you asking me out on a date?”
Fox chuckled, “Do you need me to say it? I mean do we have to put a label on it?” As much as he did want to make it a date, the look on your face made him think again.
A small smile began to emerge on your lips, those lips that always seemed to be snippy and captured his attention. Just like they drew his attention now, “Something funny, Starlight?”
“Not at all,” a coquettish smile formed on your lips, “Yes, I would like to have dinner with you.”
Fox stood outside the restaurant fidgeting with the civilian clothing he borrowed from Hound.
Who knew Hound was active in the club scene? He had mentioned something about the ladies loving Grizz, but frankly Fox couldn’t care about what Hound had to say about the clubs or about the attention he received from the ‘ladies’ because of his akk dog.
“Excuse me, sir? I’m supposed to meet someone here. He looks almost exactly like you, only less like a male fashion model,” your cheerful voice greeted Fox.
The Commander could feel his cheeks growing warm, “Well now, Starlight, I had to do my best to come up to your level.” His eyes raked over the beautiful outfit you were wearing, “You’re stunning.”
You beamed a smile at him in response, “Thank you, although seriously, you look fantastic. I wasn’t joking about the modelesque looks. Maybe it could be your second career when the war ends?”
Fox chuckles at that, “You’re much too kind, Starlight, I’m pretty certain models don’t have bags under their eyes and prematurely greying hair.”
“I dunno, you could start a new trend, exhaustingly handsome,” you teased him.
“I’m going to focus on the handsome part of that quip,” Fox told you, opening the door to the restaurant.
You winked at him as you passed by and into the warm and inviting space. The restaurant was elegant but in an understated way. A server guided the way to a quiet table with a nice view of the twinkling city lights stretching out as far as you could see.
“This is such a lovely place,” you remarked.
“Thank you, Master Kenobi recommended it,” Fox shared, feeling pleased that you liked his choice of restaurant.
As the two of you laughed and chatted over delightful dishes and a bottle of outstanding wine, you found yourself on the best date of your life. Relaxed and out of armor, Fox was downright charming. He told you amusing stories of his training days on Kamino and some very entertaining bits about life with the Guard before you joined the team. Granted, several of the tales included Fox telling someone off for being an idiot or admonishing one of his brothers for not following the rules, but you were discovering that your grumpy Commander could be quite entertaining.
“It sounds like your brothers can be quite the playful ones, how good that they have you to keep them in line,” you murmured as you sipped your wine with a smile.
“I suppose so,” he agreed softly.
Fox was having the most incredible time. Who knew dates could be so… fun? Maybe Hound had been on to something. Looking over at you, he admired the way the candlelight illuminated your face and made your eyes glow at him. It had to be you, only you could make an evening this special.
He noticed your hand resting on the table and he couldn't control his urge to reach out and brush your skin with his fingertips to see if it felt as soft as it looked. He heard you gasp softly at the initial contact, but then subtly you slid your hand closer and he took full advantage, resting his hand on top of yours.
Yes, everything had been going perfectly.
After dinner, Fox had led you out to the street, and since he hadn’t wanted the date to end, he suggested a walk through the Illumi Gardens, a beautiful park filled with flowers, greenery, and soft twinkling lights. He’d had it planned perfectly, he’d walk you through the flowers to a little spot with a gazebo and then he’d hold you close for the perfect first date kiss.
Fox just forgot to plan for his terrible luck.
“Oh Starlight, why did you have to do that? Why jump in front of me and sacrifice yourself?” Fox’s strained voice asked again, as he looked at you so fragile-looking in your hospital bed.
The ambush had come out of nowhere. Several well-armed thugs had surprised you both in the gardens. Grateful he had thought to keep his service weapon on him, Fox had gotten off several rounds quickly, taking out a fair share of the attackers. But there was one he hadn’t seen.
“Tell me again, how it happened,” Thorn asked softly; he had returned with some food for Fox and yet another cup of caf for his brother.
“I was turned away, dealing with one shooter to my left, when another popped up to the right. I felt the first shot graze my shoulder, and then as I turned, she was diving in front of me, protecting me and taking a blaster bolt straight to the chest,” Fox explained, his voice sounding hollow.
He had shot the attacker four times in retaliation, when only one blast had truly been necessary.
It had really only been an incredible stroke of luck that Jedi Master Fisto had been in the gardens too and heard the commotion. The Jedi Master had helped him subdue the rest of the thugs and then had done some of that miraculous Force healing to keep you from slipping away. Fox didn’t know how he could ever thank the general, but he would certainly try.
Fox looked over to Thorn, his eyes fresh with new tears, “How- How can I begin to live with myself if she dies?”
A soft whisper came from the bed, “Not dead yet, handsome.”
“Starlight?!?”
Fox almost fainted with relief at your open eyes and little smirk.
“You can’t be rid of me that easily, Commander,” you rasped, your throat felt strained and you felt like you’d been leveled by a pod racer, but you were awake and alive.
Fox shook his head, “I don’t want to get rid of you, Starlight, not ever.” He stood holding your hand, internally thanking the Maker and all the galaxy that you were awake. But then his expression changed and he gave you a very stern look,
“How could you do such a stupid thing? You have no regard for your own safety!” he’s too emotional to remember to not raise his voice at you right now.
You shrugged at him, unbothered, “I wasn’t worried about me in that moment.”
Fox frowned, your response taking away some of his bite, and he grumpily muttered, “You’re too damn caring for your own good.”
He raked his hand through his unruly hair, feeling frustrated but at the same time so relieved that you were here alive for him to argue with again.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but you look rather awful, Fox,” you giggled a bit at his disheveled appearance. It was so unlike him.
“How long has it been since I’ve slept?” Fox turned to ask Thorn.
Thorn snorted, “Days, possibly weeks,” the other man looked at you with a smile, “I’m glad you’re awake, sweetheart, now maybe I’ll get my brother back to quarters for a few hours, he hasn’t left your side.”
“I couldn’t leave, I needed to be with you, to make sure you were ok,” Fox’s voice was filled with emotion.
Noticing his brother’s state, Thorn discreetly slipped out of the room, giving you and Fox some privacy.
The man in question moved to sit on your bed, wrapping both of his large hands around yours. He opened his mouth a few times, but it took him a moment to be able to say what he wanted,
“You saved me from being shot. I’m still mad that you did it, but I’ll forever be grateful that you stepped in front of me. I don’t know how you could do something like that, but I am… thankful, Starlight.”
“I couldn’t bear it if you got hurt again,” you told him, your own feelings coming to the surface, “You mean too much to me.”
“Well now we’re even, and to be clear, under no circumstances are you to take a blaster bolt for me,” Fox ordered sternly, sounding like his typical commander self again, “I’ll shoot you myself if you ever try a stunt like that again.”
“Aye-aye, sir,” you replied, just a touch cheeky.
“I mean it, you aren’t to put yourself in danger like that any more,” Fox sounded rather demanding, but then he softened, “I don’t think my heart can take it.”
“Perhaps we can both try to stay out of harm’s way?” You suggested, smiling at him and noticing how he was still grasping your hand like he was afraid you would disappear.
“I’ll do my best, Starlight,” Fox nodded.
“Me too,” you agreed and then you tipped your head and gave him another smile,
“I really don’t want our second date to end in the hospital too.”
We hope you enjoyed this latest part! We have more coming from asks still in the inbox, but as always feel free to send in a prompt or a general ask about the fic!

“I hope you like it” Crosshair’s voice pulled me out of the spiral I was heading. I shifted to look at him as he placed a plate in front of me, and the other where he was going to sit beside me.
Crosshair was nervous, but it started to ease a little. He did his best to focus on the here and now and not on what had been. He decided to show off one of his skills as he picked up the bottle of wine.
His hands were mesmerizing, as in one fluid motion, he pulled out a corkscrew from his back pocket, spun it in his forefinger and opened the bottle with little issue. There was a soft smile on his lips, as he gently poured the wine into the glasses.
The aroma from the wine and food filled my nose, stirring my stomach. “Everything smells and looks amazing, you really outdid yourself.”
“Thanks. I do try.” He smirked.
“Clearly, what is it?” I smiled.
“Creamy garlic shrimp fettuccini.”
“Wow, I feel so special.”
He took his seat adjacent to her, “Enjoy.”
A silence fell over them as Crosshair dug into his plate; he could Avery telling him to stop being a jerk and talk. Open up. His eyes glanced over Layla, his lips parting every so often as a thousand ideas for varying conversations started and ended in his head. He took a sip of the wine, which was pairing quite nicely with the creamy ship, but he just couldn’t help wonder when dating became so difficult.
All his other relationships were - - alright they were purely physical, most of the time he barely even talked to them. The only thing that had mattered to him for so long was if they were willing.
Avery had been the exception. She’d been everything he had ever wanted. She was different, she challenged him, made him open up, forced him to speak his mind. When everyone else had always given into his gruff, demanding, jackass of a personality, she refused. She stood her ground and made him a better person.
As he glanced at Layla, he realized that maybe this was difficult because of one simple reason, perhaps he subtly compared Layla to Avery.
And Layla was failing.
“This is quite delicious.” Layla cut the silence, pulling Crosshair out of his spiral.
I couldn’t take the silence anymore, it felt as though this was too much. Too difficult. Maybe we were making a mistake.
“Thanks, it was my first time using this recipe.”
I nodded taking a bite of the creamy shrimp, there was a subtle heat that lingered on the lips and tongue, yet it wasn’t overpowering, it was the kind of heat that made you want more. There was also a subtle hint that carried and connected the other flavours, “Am I tasting basil?”
“Yeah …” Crosshair’s cheeks tinted a rosy hint as he scratched the back of his head.
“That’s what I thought. It tastes very good.”
“I’m glad you like it” silence once again fell upon the table as they both chewed their food. Crosshair was mentally kicking his own ass, telling himself to get his head in the game. “Do you cook often?” He froze as he looked at the shrimp, it seemed to be chastising him ‘really? That’s your question, you waste of space!’
“Oh… um, it really just depends on my schedule, and what case I’m working on. Some cases are more involved and keep me super busy. But when I get the time to cook … yes. I cook often.” There was a pressure in my stomach that had been slowly building ever since the workout at the gym, and was beginning to make me even more uncomfortable, as though a pressure built from within, “How about yourself? Do you cook like this on a regular basis?”
“More often than I realized, now that I think about it.”
Crosshair tilted his head, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Layla’s face, she seemed uncomfortable, droplets of sweat began appearing on her upper lip and at the tip of her forehead. Her trembling hand reached forward, taking the glass of wine towards her lips. Crosshair wondered if it was something he said or did that made her uncomfortable.
Of course, she’s uncomfortable. Everyone is always uncomfortable around me. Why would I think this would go any different? The only one who truly felt comfortable from the beginning was Avery. And she’s no Avery.
Crosshair let out a soft sigh, pushing the thought of Avery away.
“What do you usually cook?” I tried my best to not let the discomfort that had started to build appear on my face. The last thing I wanted was to ruin this evening and let Crosshair know I was in pain. Yet, the longer I tried to ignore it, the more the pressure built. Something felt wrong. It felt like knives were cutting through my abdomen, as though something wanted out.
“Depends, I have a few recipes I keep in rotation, but when I have time I like to change it up…”
Crosshair’s voice droned on, as the pain continued to build. Oh dear God, I need to fart so bad. I tried to keep a calm look on my face, nodding as he talked about something or other. I felt a rumble within my lower abdomen, oh lord it wanted to come out. I grasped the utensil in my hand as tightly as possible hoping to pass the pain from my abdomen to the knife, but it didn’t help. I could feel beads of sweet crowning my forehead.
“… but usually I’m too tired when I get home from work, so I just grab one of my premade dinners and reheat it.”
“That’s quite interesting …” I cleared my throat, “Sorry, Cross, where’s your bathroom again?”
“Oh, down the hall and first door on the left.”
I smiled offering a nod of thanks. The grip I had on my utensils was nearly superhuman, as I forced my fingers to open and release the fork and knife in my hands. I pushed the seat back, and stood only for the greatest horror to happen.

ImperialFedEx: Commander, may I ask why you want this life-sized chew toy in the shape of the emperor, made of...mystery meat.
Commander Fox: I'm training my puppy.
Zillo beast roars in the distance.
Commander Fox: ... That's my puppy.

Reporter: How are you clones settling into your new lives now that you've been granted citizenship? Thorn: ::making a confused face:: What do you mean? I’m not a clone. Reporter: ...what? No, I can see you're both clones -- you're not wearing your helmets! Thorn: Fox gave birth to me. Fox: ::behind Thorn, nodding:: Obviously.
