okay alright it's FINALLY TIME to talk about a caitvi thing that's been in my head for like at least a month now. probably longer. time doesn't exist. but anyway, i wanna answer this question: why was vi constantly trying to provoke caitlyn during the first day they spent together? and it really is constant, so much that it defines every scene they have in episode 5.
she just. does things, over and over again that caitlyn isn't expecting and doesn't understand, without explanation or warning, and lets caitlyn try to keep up on her own which leaves caitlyn annoyed and frustrated every time. now, vi never across the whole show gives off "jerk for no reason" vibes, but she's objectively kind of a jerk to caitlyn on their first day together. so i'd argue that she has a reason.
i should say that i don't think this is like...something that vi planned to do ahead of time and is executing some kind of master scheme. that's not the way she operates at all. she just identifies the next thing to be done and does it. she's not a chess player, she's a boxer - observing and acting and reacting from moment to moment, but always with intention.
so, what is her intention here? i think it's pretty simple: she's trying to force caitlyn to show her who she really is. this is something she needs to know--not knowing is a liability--but the direction she's approaching this from, fishing for a negative response, shows us what she expects to find out. she doesn't trust caitlyn, doesn't believe that she's a good person, doesn't really believe that there ARE good people anywhere. and she wants to confirm that for herself. she wants to be right about caitlyn, because that's the uncomplicated answer that won't require her to change.
but all that caitlyn keeps doing in response to vi's provocations is...kind of nothing. she lets her frustration show sometimes but for the most part she just...follows vi. and vi doesn't know what to make of this. i love the snippet of script we got for this particular moment:
if i remember right, the writers described vi here as both impressed and disappointed (which side note HOW did the animators manage to nail such a complex expression so perfectly like that's EXACTLY how she looks). it's like she was waiting for something, and didn't get it, and isn't sure how to interpret what she did get instead.
but after carefully observing caitlyn all day, vi starts to arrive at a different (though still not flattering) conclusion about her. caitlyn's reactions to vi's needling mostly amount to complaints. "please stop being like this, it's exhausting and annoying." i think that vi starts to believe that maybe caitlyn really is harmless, that instead of being some kind of tyrannical monster in disguise, she's actually just an entitled rich girl who's in over her head and doesn't have a lot of depth to her. that would explain the nickname she whips out--cupcake. pretty, decadent, no substance. not exactly the conclusion vi expected, but still very much uncomplicated, still very much rooted in her prejudices.
we all know of course that she's wrong. she could not be MORE wrong. and in fact, something has already happened that would have shown her exactly what she's looking for, if only she had been there to see it.
here caitlyn is, standing up for her, actually angry on her behalf after learning about the abuse she's been subjected to. she doesn't like vi at this point. she doesn't know anything about her that would change her preconceived negative opinion about her--for all caitlyn knows, vi is just some lowlife. and yet that doesn't matter. how vi has been treated by the guards in stillwater is wrong, and so caitlyn won't tolerate it.
but although vi may never know this happened, it's not long before another opportunity presents itself for caitlyn to show vi who she is. just a day after being released from prison, vi finds herself in a dire situation, staring down the murderous intention of metal claws, but caitlyn is there on her behalf again. and this time, vi sees it. she hears the gunshots, watches caitlyn chase sevika away, and there's no denying the answer to her question.
this who caitlyn is. she's a protector, especially of those who don't have the power to protect themselves, but vi never would have thought to look for this in her. she never would have found it if everything had gone smoothly. she expected to get her answer by making caitlyn angry, but found it instead by needing her help.

Grave women, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
