"lilia, do you think we were lovers in a past life?"

your voice rang through the much colder walls of diasomnia, the slightest chill from his dorm's window contrasting the warmth of your body resting against his. he sat above you with a gentle but longing expression as your head leaned across his lap under the covers of his bedsheets. the familiar touch of his hand through your hair aided you in a soft and quiet haze, leaving you idly rambling as you fought againt your own growing tiredness.

"what makes you say that, my dove?"

lilia whispered down, his voice feigning innocence as a flash of unknown emotions came undone within his eyes at the mention of the past. emotions of unadulterated yearning, devotion, and devastation. a glance that told both everything and nothing at all with hidden stories of broken pasts, unfortunate fates, and a fleeting sense of romance. vulnerability. no matter how much he denied it, his eyes told centuries of stories he could never have the time to tell you this late into the night.

so instead, a simple question was all you got in reply.

but in that one simple question, a multitude of memories flooded through lilia's clouded mind. storms upon storms clashed against his heart as images cascaded into his memories. images of a peculilar human—bright and troublesome—sneaking into palace grounds for a taste of a snack. images of him catching that same human and strangely falling in love as their game of chase went on. images of him holding the human he learned to love as they breathed their last, an inevitable price of war.

but then other memories began to infect his mind directly after. a fleeting touch during a neighboring kingdom's ball. a skirmish between two sides on an afternoon horseback ride. a shared glance at a town's marketplace. one filled with unspoken tension and longing. each encounter he pursued blindly. and each encounter together led from one thing to the next... until him and his human both succumbed to the pull of their emotions.

he loved and loved until his human's time was up. and then he would find them again. he would find you again. that's just how it was.

different name. different eyes. but the same soul.

is this what it meant to have a soulmate? to see the human soul he grew to love repeatedly live and die while his life remained stagnant? lilia was not entirely sure. or maybe... he simply did not wish to cling onto the hopes that you would always find your way to him in your every lifetime. he may continue to love you in his lifetime, but what guaranteed that you would love him in each of yours? lilia did not want to even think about it.

yet he did. always.

so when he hears a lazy and mumbled reply coming from your tired figure, his gaze softens along with a profound pain in the depths of his heart. he feels as your hand subconciously curls against the hem of his shirt. a deep sigh escapes his chest as he gently holds your cheek against the palm of his hand, an action that he has done since the first life he had found you in. his eyes trace your face and peer into your soul.

"don't worry. even if you do not find me in each of your lifetimes..." lilia leans down his forehead against yours, pushing back the tears in his eyes as if it were second nature with a small, vulnerable whisper.

You had been looking radiant the entire day, with a smile that rivaled the sun.

Rook believed he had to have done something to earn such a beautiful sight. He was lucky to have been the one to bring you here. Once he helped braid your magical hair so that you were not dragging it everywhere, the fun had begun. 

You were dazzling, brimming with curiosity, and Rook was more than happy to be the one to feed into all of your wildest whims. He had taken you to the library, and you pointed to all the places you wanted to visit in the books, he snuck you some cupcakes just to watch your eyes shut in satisfaction at their sweet taste, and he even helped you paint the ground in vibrant chalk with the children of the kingdom.

Now you were both caught up in a wonderful dance in the village square, switching from partner to partner, fabric and hair flowing with each turn as the music sped up. The air was filled with laughter and cheers, but Rook’s sharp stare was focused on one individual, and that was you. Each time he felt the dance was going to bring the two of you together, you both were tugged by different dance partners, which he did not mind. He was having fun, and he figured you would end up in his arms eventually. A good hunter did not jump into action until the time was right.

Still, that did not keep the two of you from looking for one another in the crowds of people.

As the song was nearing its end, you shut your eyes to focus on the music, having figured out the pattern the dance went in, and you opened them once more once you found your final partner. It was Rook, who was now holding you close, smiling at you as you panted. 

The rest of the people applauded while your cheeks flushed and you looked away, pulling back so that you were not so pressed up against him. 

“You are a skilled dancer, mon Trickster,” he murmured, keeping you in his arms.

“Ah, thank you…”

His gaze remained on your face, reading every twitch of your brow and movement of your lips before he finally let you go and pulled back, “Let us go find our boat,” he said, kissing the back of your hand before gently tugging you along.

Those were the last coherent words the fervent man before you uttered as he hesitantly guided a shaking yet firm hand against the back of your head, his whispers leaving a warm tingle down your neck like a flickering fire dancing on your skin. Barely even letting the final words of his sentence ring throughout the dimly lit room of his dorm, desperate lips reached your own as the comforting darkness of the two of you shutting your eyes closed ensued like a rhythm you both knew all too well, almost as if you had done this a million times before.

Tangling in each other's limbs and reveling in each other's embrace, you weren't sure what you should call the young man in front of you anymore. Acquaintance? Friend? Mutual?

Lover...?

Memories of dreams you thought were too unattainable to be true played through your mind as you pulled him in closer to you like a familiar dance you both were too new at.

Any hope for anything more seemed so distant to the two of you. And yet you still continued to push and pull at one another, teasing the boundaries between formalities, friendship, and longing.

Shortly, the electrifying touch of his fingertips reached the side of your waist, sending an enticing shock to the nerves of your skin. You both knew that one of you should have stopped, letting the other catch their breath as you two properly spoke about what had just happened. The boundaries you both had crossed together with one simple yet desperate kiss.

Pushing and pulling, lingering then leaving, turning away only to glance back more passionately than before...

This intricate dance was one that had gone on for far too long. Yet the two of you were used to the fiery touches and impossible desires. Like a sick game made to either burn or ignite the raging emotions you held for one another. Pushing and pulling at the limits. Pushing and pulling at the quiet ache in your chest, an ache that both wished to spill your feelings out like a ravaging river—yet a frustrating pain that sought to bury those same emotions deep into the crevices of your heart, hidden even from yourself.

Pushing and pulling. Longing and desiring.

How thin was the line between friendship and lovers, anyway? Is there really a need to say what these emotions you experience are each time he whispers your name in the same yearning tone, tender and woven together like a smudged letter in the rain? One that was too blurred from the pouring droplets of water to decipher whether it was a letter of love or letter of heartache?

Neither of you cared, however. Love, longing, yearning, heartache... it all blurred into one. It was just up to whoever broke first to name whatever this conflicting relationship was to you both.

Pushing the limits, pulling towards the closeness. You and the young man you once knew as your friend remained—caught between your wants and desires as you succumbed to the warmth of his skin gently grazing yours.

Hey... Do you know the song sung by the voice actor from the pilot Hazbin Hotel? Called Thank you and goodnight ( I recommend). Weirdly this song reminds me of Mystic Messenger, despite being a new fan and having been into this game until this year 2024 I already felt a connection, seeing old posts about this game from an old fan somehow makes me tear up. Despite I'm a fan of 2024, I somehow feel nostalgic about this game despite never actually experienced it before ( COME BACK TO MYSTIC MESSENGER)

hi there! so sorry for the extremely late answer... i'll admit it's been a hectic past few months for me :,) but i did see your ask! and i did check out the song you specifically mentioned and completely agree! i can see how you'd be reminded of mystic messenger through it. i feel like it perfectly encapsulates the emotional rollercoaster mystic messenger puts both its players and characters through lol. with all of the joys, tragedies, chaos, and love throughout the game, the song definitely does an amazing job of showing every emotion.

i may not know much about hazbin hotel, but i can say that this song does match up with the feelings of nostalgia i get from when i completed mysme lmao.

on another note! i will also admit that it feels odd to be referred to as an older fan of mysme (just thought it was funny!) as i always considered myself a more "later" fan since the game came out in 2016, and i found myself entering the fandom the year they released their final string of content with ray's after ending around 2020. but my concept of time since then has been so twisted (2020 still feels like a year ago lol) so maybe i am an older player in denial lmaoo. i'm so happy to see new and more older players still talk about mystic messenger though! it really is such an amazing game that will always be special to me.

on coming back to the mystic messenger fandom however... that is honestly very uncertain for me/this blog. even while playing the game, i was never actively part of any social platform posting about mysme. i played and completed the game a couple years ago by now. a year or two before i even made this blog. and once i created this blog, most of my content was filled with other games like twisted wonderland (i'm sure you've seen; all of my writing here is literally for twst lolol).

now, any post with mysme is very casual on my end. a comment here and there, an occasional post sometimes. i still adore the game for sure, and i never truly left the fandom. it's just that my writing won't focus on mysme since my peak moments when playing the game were from a time when i didn't really write content to post yet. i'll still lurk in posts from time to time, but there are no promises of me actively posting on mysme like i would have a few years ago :,)

i'll definitely still talk about mysme to others like you if you wish to though! memes, discussions, etc. love it all.
