The turnaround time of a standard paternity test result is 2 to 3 business days from the date on which the laboratory receives all genetic samples. A standard paternity test refers to the method of using buccal cheek swabs to collect the samples of the participants involved with your test.
If you are using non-conventional samples/forensic samples like hair samples to perform a DNA test to determine paternity. The turnaround time for your result is 3 to 5 days on average or longer. It should also be noted that currently, we do not offer services to New York State residents for Forensic testing like hair follicles. In all other states, forensic relationship testing can be performed.
Court-ordered DNA test
How long does a court-ordered DNA test take?
On average paternity testing handled directly through Family Court has an average turnaround time of 6 to 8 weeks. Although, since COVID-19 pandemic began. We have heard reports of four months and longer wait times to receive results. Please note, turnaround will vary from state to state and city to city. Remember, this is state-sponsored testing and not private DNA testing. The most common cases where court orders are issued are child support cases.
Legal DNA Paternity Test
What is a legal paternity test?
Legal paternity testing is a DNA test that is performed to help establish if an alleged father is biologically related to a child. What makes this DNA test result a legal document is, the establishment of a chain of custody. In addition, all legal paternity and related DNA tests can only be performed by an AABB accredited DNA testing lab. Labs that are accredited by the AABB are recognized by Family Courts, Immigration offices, and all state and government institutions.
Do I need a court order to perform a legal paternity test?
No. A legal DNA test can be performed without a court order. Normally, court orders are needed when either the alleged biological father or the mother/legal guardian of a child refuses to perform a paternity test.
If both the alleged father and mother agree to perform a legal DNA paternity test to establish the paternity of a child. A test can be performed using our legal DNA paternity testing services here or contact our office at 877-680-5800.
At-Home Paternity Testing Kit
How long does an At-Home Paternity test results take?
The average turnaround time for a standard buccal swab paternity test results is  2 to 3 working days from the date all genetic samples arrive at the laboratory. There is no difference between a legal and an At-Home (Non-legal) Paternity Test samples are tested.
The difference between the two options is how you can use the result. Legal testing requires a chain of custody to be established and Non-legal is for information purposes only and can be used for legal purposes.
How will I receive my DNA Paternity Testing results?
Upon the completion of testing of your genetic samples submitted to the lab. One of our DNA relationship testing consultants will contact you, and provide you with a status update of your results. A copy of your results will be emailed to you and a physical copy will be mailed out to your home.
Does IDTO provide ancestry testing results?
No. Currently, IDTO does not offer ancestry testing services for people who want to know their genealogy.

How does a home DNA test kit work?
When performing an At-Home Paternity Test kit or another related Home DNA Test kit you will include a set of instructions that will be enclosed along with your DNA sample collection supplies such as, a chain of custody form, cotton swabs, and a return shipping label going back to the lab. Below are the instruction on how to collect your own DNA samples in the comfort of your home.
How to collect your DNA test sample instructions
Complete the chain of custody form enclosed with your DNA kit. The required sections that must you complete are as follows: Relationship, Name, Date of Birth, Signature, Date of Collection and Sex. These sections will be highlighted on the chain of custody form.
Fill out each DNA Collection Envelope, with the name of each tested person as it appears on the Collection Form, (Alleged Father, Child, Mother, Sibling etc.) date of collection, date of birth, name of the collector and initial the back of each envelope. These sections will be highlighted in the sample collection envelopes.
There are two swabs in each cheek swabs package – 2 swab packets are for one person only for a total of 4 swabs person
Remove the first swab by slowly pulling it out of the protective package, do not touch any part of the cotton tip with your hand, and only touch the shaft with your fingers.
Swab the inside of the mouth between the cheek and the gum brushing and twirling for a minimum of 30 seconds on the left cheek 2 x (once for each swab in the packet). Make sure you air-dry the swab for 30 seconds or more to avoid possible contamination.
Then repeat the same process for the right cheek.
After each cheek swab, place each (4) cotton swabs into the respective DNA ID Envelope of the person having their sample collected.
The process described above should be performed exactly the same for all parties involved with the DNA test.
Once completed please make sure you have completed the chain of custody form correctly. Place the chain of custody form and DNA Collection Envelopes into the prepaid envelope that came along with your collection kit.
Ship DNA testing kit back to the laboratory.

Can paternity testing be done without the mother?
Performing a paternity test without the mother’s knowledge or if she is unavailable to participate in the testing process. Is not the most ideal situation but we do recognize there are circumstances that may require a mother not to be tested. Paternity testing without the mother is still a very accurate option. In fact, pretty much all DNA testing labs that provide this service have tested an alleged father and child together without the biological mother’s DNA sample being submitted for testing.
Can a DNA test be wrong if the mother is not tested?
A DNA test is wrong to our knowledge, has no bearing on if the mother is involved with a paternity test. Over the years, to our knowledge, we have not seen our partner DNA lab provide a wrong result. Instances, where a result can possibly turnout wrong, is if intentionally falsifying a sample. For example, if an alleged father asks his friend to take the paternity test in his place.
How long will it take for me to receive my result if the mother is not included in my test?
The turnaround time is the same if the mother is involved with your paternity test or not involved with the paternity testing process. Turnaround times for your result to be completed is 1 to 3 business days from the date in which the lab receives all DNA samples.
Can I perform a paternity test if the mother is the sole legal guardian?
If you are performing a non-legal peace of mind paternity test then yes, It is possible for you to perform a DNA paternity test with or without the mother’s involvement. Now, If you are performing a legal paternity test and the alleged father’s name is not on the birth certificate. Then the biological mother or legal guardian will have to be present to give consent for a child under the age of 18 years of old.
Probability of Paternity
When you receive your results. There are three possible conclusions.
1. An exclusion which means the alleged father is not the biological father
2. An inclusion which means the alleged father is the biological father
3. Or, inconclusive which means based on the evidence (DNA samples) submitted a conclusive result was not able to be determined.
When you receive your result by email and physical mail. A simplified description of the outcome of your result will be included for better comprehension of your test result.
Chain of Custody
When comes to legal paternity testing a chain of custody must be established in order for your DNA testing result to be accepted by immigration or by a family court judge. Chain custody is the order in which evidence is collected when dealing with legal matters such as child support, social security, and immigration. If you would like to order an at-home paternity test. Please buy your test kit online here today or, you can contact our office to purchase your test kit.
Conclusion:
Paternity testing without the mother is possible if you are performing a non-legal paternity test. If you would like to learn more visit our page about the home paternity testing process here.

How to get a paternity test done with hair?
Performing a home paternity test with hair is simple. The first thing you will need is a minimum of 8 to 10 hair follicles from the person you would like to be against. Please note, each hair follicle must have the root attached to the follicle in order to perform a paternity test effectively.
The next step would be is to place each hair follicle into the same paper envelope like a mailing letter envelope or something along these lines and seal the envelope. Do not forget to label the envelope. It is important to note, placing hair follicle samples into a plastic bag or Ziploc bag may compromise the integrity of the sample making the sample’s success rate of effectiveness less likely. After you collect the hair samples please contact Paternity Express to order your home DNA testing kit.
Once you order your home paternity DNA testing kit. The kit will be shipped to your home. Please follow the instructions carefully. Complete the enclosed chain of custody form, place the DNA samples collected into the enclosed prepaid envelope and ship the prepaid envelope pack to the lab for testing. Upon completion of your result, a copy will be emailed to and a copy will be sent to your home.
How does the process work?
The process is simple to get started.
1. First step, contact Paternity Express by phone or you can purchase a kit online here.
2. After you purchase your kit. Please allow 24 hours or the next business day for your kit to ship to your home.
3. Once the kit has shipped you will be sent an email with the tracking information going to your home.
4. After you receive your kit. Follow the enclosed instructions carefully on how to collect your own samples. Complete the chain of custody form. Place your samples and chain of custody inside of your prepaid return envelope.
5. Once your samples arrive at the lab. Please allow 1 to 3 business days for your results to be completed.
6. When your results are complete. One of our DNA relationship testing consultants will contact you and provide you with a result update. A copy will be sent to you by email and another copy will be sent by physical mail.
Please note: If you are a New York State resident you will not be able to purchase any Home DNA Testing kits due to the New York State Department of Health guidelines. Only legal DNA tests can be performed in New York State.

How Does At Home Paternity Testing Work?
As stated earlier in this article. It is a straightforward process, with simple instructions. It is worth noting that a home DNA test requires that you collect your own DNA samples at home. Our DNA kit comes with simple easy to follow instructions on how to perform self DNA sample collections effectively. A standard kit comes with a prepaid overnight return envelope going to the lab, a chain of custody form sample collection supplies for a father and child or, a father, mother, and child.
Once the samples are collected, they are delivered to our partner laboratory for DNA extraction and analysis. The laboratory will process and analyze your samples using between 18 and 24 genetic DNA markers to produce a genetic profile from each sample you submitted to the lab. The profiles are then compared to see if a biological relationship can be established between an alleged father and child. Results Turnaround Time
The results are usually completed within 1 to 3 days from the date in which the lab receives all DNA samples. Upon completion of your results, a copy will be sent to your email and a copy will be sent to your home. Method of sample collection home paternity tests can be done on people of all ages, including young children since they are non-invasive and cheek swabs are used to collect samples. However, our test kits have buccal swabs enclosed inside the kits. We do offer alternative unconventional sample testing options. Here are a few alternative testing sample options, a toothbrush, used kleenex, and hair just to name a few.

Home paternity testing has an accuracy of 100% when done well, ensuring error-free results through proper handling, testing, and sample analysis. The results are given as a percentage of the probability of a biological relationship between the child and alleged father (inclusion paternity test) and in most cases, the result is 99.99% or above. Exclusion results are always 0% since if the two genetic profiles don’t match, statistically they are no chance that the child and alleged father are biologically related.

Can a DNA test be done with just the father and child?
Yes, a DNA test can be done without involving the mother’s samples since it requires matching the father’s genetic profile with that of the child and comparing them. The advantage of having the mother involved with a paternity test will increase the accuracy of the results.
Conclusion:
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the home paternity test and how it works. This procedure is very affordable, accurate, and comfortable as cheek swabs aren’t sensitive or painful. High confidentiality is also assured and results are only accessible to the participating parties. A home DNA test is very simple and you don’t have to live all your life with doubts. How Accurate Are Home Paternity Tests?
Are Home Paternity Tests Accurate?
This is a question many people who would like to determine paternity for non-legal peace of mind reasons before going to family court would like to know. In this post, we will answer the question about the accuracy of a home paternity test and what is the most common circumstance you may use the home paternity testing option. Let’s begin.
What is a home paternity test?
A home paternity test is a test that can be performed in the comfort of your home, office, or anywhere you deem private. Typically,  A person will have to purchase a Home DNA Paternity Test Kit online. Enclosed within your DNA paternity kit is a chain of custody form, buccal swab packets for the biological father, child and if the mother is available, How to collect your DNA samples instructions, and a return prepaid shipping envelope returning back to the laboratory. It should also be noted that a home paternity test requires the purchaser to collect their own samples.
What At-Home Paternity Tests results can be used for?
Home Paternity Test results can be used for informational purposes only. So, if you are an alleged biological father that has questions regarding your paternity with a child you believe to be biologically related to yourself without legal involvement. A home paternity test would be an ideal option. A Home DNA test will allow an alleged biological father to perform a paternity test if his name is not on the birth certificate and without the mother being present. Although performing a paternity test without the mother is not recommended. Your DNA Test result will be accurately processed and analyzed without the mother. With the mother involved in your test. It will allow for increased accuracy of your results.
How accurate is a home paternity test?
Home paternity testing services we provide are performed by a partner accredited laboratory that performs DNA testing services that produce results that are recognized by Family Court Judges, Immigration office such as USCIS, U.S. Passport Agencies, and U.S. Embassies worldwide. In other words, the testing of a home paternity test is the same as a legal paternity test. Which means the testing methods are accurate. Essentially, how your DNA samples are collected and handled will determine the effectiveness of the lab’s ability to produce a result.
Home DNA Test  vs Legal DNA Test differences
The biggest differences between a home paternity test and a legal paternity test are who will collect the samples and how the results can be utilized. Legal paternity test requires an experience third-party DNA sample collector to collect your samples. The collector will also be responsible for taking a headshot photo and a copy of your ID. The reason a DNA collector is required to collect all the above-described information. All legal tests must establish a chain of custody for your result to be deemed as a legal document. These are the things you can expect when it comes to having your genetic samples collected for legal testing purposes.
Home paternity tests do not require you to provide pictures or your ID. Home testing options allow you to perform your paternity test discreetly and in the comfort of your home to maintain your privacy.
Can I perform an At-Home Paternity Test While Pregnant?
Currently, we do not provide prenatal paternity testing services. As we understand it, Non-invasive Prenatal Testing services can only be performed at a collection facility or if a trained DNA sample collector traveled out to the home of the pregnant mother to draw blood.  There are no Home Prenatal Paternity Testing Kits we are aware of on the market that will allow a mother to collect their own samples.
Can a mouth swab DNA test be wrong?
We are often are asked about the accuracy and validity of cheek swab samples versus using other samples like blood. Here is was should be noted about cheek swab samples. Just using the cheek samples will not produce a wrong result. If swabs are used to collect DNA samples from an alleged father and child who had their samples collected at the same location at the same time. The outcome of the results whether positive (you are the biological father) or negative (you are excluded as the father) would be accurate. Unless one of the participants either alleged biological father or the child has a rare genetic disorder that will skew the lab results. Normally, in order for you to know a possible error has been made. Another DNA test will have to be performed by a different DNA testing lab. The scenario described would be a very rare circumstance and would not apply to the majority of people performing a paternity test.
What should be noted as well. Many times people confuse the difference between wrong DNA test results and badly handled sample collection. Below are four main examples that may contaminate your results or produce a wrong result because the lab will deem the test inconclusive.
1. Too much saliva on the buccal swab sample that was not properly air-dried during the sample collection. Excess saliva/moisture on the swab may attract bacteria that will possibly contaminate the sample. If this is the case the lab will deem the testing inconclusive and a second sample collection will be needed to conclude testing.
2. Blood samples like blood samples on a band-aid or tissue paper not properly handled may cause an inconclusive result. It is recommended that blood samples like tissue paper and band-aid are placed in a paper envelope.
3. Mis-handling of the sample collector by not carefully following the instructions may cause samples to become contaminated. Also, a DNA sample collector can potentially mix-up samples with another case which could produce a wrong result. If you believe this is the case. Performing another paternity test with a different DNA testing company is recommended.
4. Another person having their sample collected in place of the alleged father or child can produce a wrong result. This is why it is encouraged that all parties involved with the paternity test samples are collected in the same place at the same time to verify the identity of the participants. Home paternity tests can provide an opportunity for this to happen if one person lives in another country or state from the other tested party.
How often are Home DNA Tests wrong?
Unfortunately, we do not have any current or historical data that regarding wrong Home DNA Tests for our industry. What we can speak about is we have not experienced any of our clients complain about results being wrong after taking a second DNA test to confirm the results performed by our partner lab.
Conclusion
Home DNA Paternity Tests are accurate and are tested the same exact way as legal paternity tests. The only difference between a Home peace of mind test and a legal test is home your results can be used.

It is the establishment of a chain of custody along with your DNA samples being collected by an unbiased third-party DNA sample collector and your samples being tested and analyzed by an AABB accredited laboratory such as our partner laboratory that allows your DNA test results to be court-admissible.
Conclusion
If you are in need of paternity test results for legal purposes such as for birth certificate name changes, child custody, and/or child support maybe even for Social Security. Please note, Peace of mind home paternity tests will not be accepted by a Family Court Judge or State institution. It should also be noted that you do not have to be the legal father of a child to perform a Peace of Mind Home Paternity Test if you have access to the child.  We do recommend that mothers and alleged fathers work to consult with one another before performing a paternity test if possible. This way, it lessens potential disagreements regarding how the testing was performed. In addition, the biological mother of the child does not have to be present although we recommend that the biological mother participates in the paternity test for increased accuracy of the results.

How Does Home Paternity Tests Work?
Home DNA testing is straightforward, especially if you need it just for general knowledge and not for legal purposes. If you are an alleged father and are in doubt, you can quickly satisfy your curiosity with the help of our services at Paternity Express for paternity test kits and results. Our laboratory analyses cheek swabs or saliva to give very accurate DNA results within days. This procedure is effortless and straightforward and once you collect and mail your samples to the lab. It will be processed and analyzed and mailed to your home. This article will discuss various aspects of a home paternity test and how it works.
Method of sample collection
Home paternity tests can be done on people of all ages, including young children since they are non-invasive and cheek swabs are used to collect samples. However, our test kits have buccal swabs enclosed inside the kits. We do offer alternative unconventional sample testing options. Here are a few alternative testing sample options, a toothbrush, used kleenex, and hair just to name a few.
What is the cost of a Paternity Express Home Paternity test?
The cost of our home DNA Paternity Test kit starts at $179.99 and up. If you would like to order your home kit online today click to visit our order page here.
How Accurate Is Home Paternity Testing?
Conclusion
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the home paternity test and how it works. This procedure is very affordable, accurate, and comfortable as cheek swabs aren’t sensitive or painful. High confidentiality is also assured and results are only accessible to the participating parties. A home DNA test is very simple and you don’t have to live all your life with doubts. What is a chain of custody?
In practice, A chain of custody is a chronological paper trail documenting the DNA sample collection process from the beginning the participants have their samples collected to the completion of your samples being tested. In some instances, if your results need to be shipped to a judge or immigration office. The tracking details will be apart of the chain of custody process.

Normally, At Home DNA Tests are used for informational purposes to help determine a biological relationship such as paternity, sibling relationships to help determine if the siblings share the same biological father or mother, or grandparent DNA test between 1 or both grandparents with their alleged grandchild.
Many times if one person does not want to perform a DNA test and, the other party wants to perform a DNA test. The person who wants to perform a DNA test will do it discreetly. Some of the most common testing options are DNA testing with hair follicles, DNA testing with a toothbrush, DNA testing with a kleenex or handkerchief, DNA testing with a stained blood sample like bandaids or blood on a tissue. What makes a DNA test a legal DNA testing result?
As stated earlier, A legal DNA test requires that a chain of custody be established. Here are some of the things you will experience when performing a legal DNA test.
1. All DNA samples must be completed by an unbiased third-party DNA sample collector.
2. A chain of custody form will be completed and signed
3. Picture of all parties involved with your DNA test will be taken.
4. It should be noted that each person over the age of 18 years of age must walk with their state-issued identification. For immigration DNA testing sample collections you will need to supply the request for evidence paperwork sent to the petitioner’s home requesting additional secondary evidence with DNA testing as an option.
5. When a DNA collector is done collecting your samples. The collector will place the completed contents into a shipping envelope in front of the tested parties to be shipped.
6. The collector is also responsible for the coordination of the shipment of your genetic samples to the laboratory for genetic analysis.

Home Paternity Tests
Tumblr media
A home paternity test can be a simple, fast, and cost efficient process. This kind of DNA test has its advantages and disadvantages of course. Let's go into a little bit more detail about this test as well as its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages:
Some of the advantages of dealing with a home paternity test are the peace, privacy, and the sense of comfort of administering the test at home. Instead of being in a public room waiting for a medical tech, you can do it in the safe environment of your own home. You can feel comfortable instead of feeling anxious and stressed. Another advantage of a home paternity test is the privacy for the potential father. If you have been with multiple partners, you can find out who it is without everyone knowing. Whichever home testing company's kit you chose to go with, they will mail you your home paternity test kit, and you simply need to gently swipe the provided swab inside of the child, father, and mother's cheek. The home paternity test provides privacy, confidentiality, and it saves on gas and the need to re-arrange your schedule. Those are just some of the many advantages that a home paternity test holds.
Disadvantages:
When dealing with home paternity tests the disadvantages can be a huge deciding factor. Although it is extremely simple to obtain the DNA from the three parties, there can be other issues. A certain amount of DNA needs to be on the swab for the lab techs to perform a reliable DNA test. That means if you do not collect enough DNA on the swab, they will have to send you another paternity kit. The next disadvantage is that a home paternity test cannot be used for any legal purposes. That means if you want to file for child support or custody.
