The Great Negotiation

A Jude x Cardan family fanfic wherein their daughter (Liora) who is trying (and failing) to bargain with her father while Jude secretly enjoys every second

Three days into her sentence of royal imprisonment (also known as being grounded), Princess Liora Greenbriar had had enough.

No riding her foxhound.

No garden picnics.

No sweet lemon tarts from the royal kitchens.

And worst of all—no stories before bed. Not even one.

Which was, in her words, “a crime against princesses everywhere.”

So, Liora did what any determined, half-mortal, half-fae child would do.

She bargained.

She marched into the study where her father held court with a pile of scrolls and a very bored expression. Jude stood by the window, arms folded and watching this unfold like it was her favorite play.

Cardan looked up slowly as Liora entered, dragging behind her a small, wheeled box filled with her drawings and carefully hoarded glitter.

She curtsied. “Your Majesty.”

Cardan blinked. “Oh no.”

She cleared her throat. “I have come to offer you a deal.”

He closed his eyes. “I am busy.”

“It’ll take two minutes,” she said sweetly. “Three at most.”

Jude coughed into her hand to hide a laugh.

Liora opened her box and dramatically pulled out a glitter-covered paper crown.

“This,” she said, “is the Crown of Eternal Nice Dads. If you accept this gift, in exchange I will only partially disobey you from now on. Also, I want lemon tarts and to be un-grounded by dinnertime.”

Cardan stared at her.

“Let me get this straight,” he said dryly. “You want me to wear that—” He gestured vaguely at the sparkly object. “—in exchange for you still disobeying me, but only sometimes?”

Liora nodded enthusiastically. “And I’ll clean my room! With, like, effort.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose.

Jude, who had turned fully to watch by now, raised her brows and asked, “How much effort?”

Liora considered. “Like… 65 percent.”

Cardan gave her a long, slow blink. “Liora. You nearly died three days ago.”

“But I didn’t!” she said brightly. “So technically, it was a success.”

Jude barked a laugh and quickly turned it into a cough.

Cardan looked at his wife. “Do something.”

“I think you’re handling it beautifully,” Jude said, lips twitching.

He turned back to Liora, who was now balancing the paper crown on his desk and trying to look as innocent as possible.

“You are grounded,” he said flatly.

“Forever?”

“Four more days.”

Liora’s mouth fell open. “You added time?!”

“You tried to bribe me. With glitter.”

She gasped. “But it’s biodegradable! I asked a dryad!”

Cardan stood slowly and loomed over her in that very regal, very dad-ish way. “No tarts. No outings. And if I hear one word about glowing mushrooms, I’m locking your books.”

Liora let out a wail and threw herself face-first onto the carpet.

Cardan stepped over her with practiced ease.

Jude watched him pass, arms crossed, and whispered, “You’re enjoying this.”

“I have waited years,” he said under his breath, “to wield my petty side for something productive.”

Liora’s muffled voice whined from the floor: “This is child cruelty! Someone call the faerie rights council!”

Cardan didn’t even turn around. “They’re afraid of me, too.”
