marine biology is so scary because it’s such a small field. i was giving a talk on cetaceans and afterward a woman approached me with her husband and she said, “you did very well. [husband’s name] actually pioneered the research and published the first paper on that. We were very impressed by you.”

Which is such a scientific interpretation/public education win I will cherish forever but also for the rest of my life any time I give a talk I will be haunted by the knowledge that the world’s leading expert who literally discovered/invented the topic might be in the room,

which is like, the opposite of what you’re supposed to do for stage fright. In fact I never used to experience stage fright but now I will.

You reblogged something about how people choose if they read a fix or not; I think it’s funny, I’ve been reading fics since the 2000s and I’ve always gone by the author’s own summary. I don’t need it to be fancy, I just want it to tell me what I’m getting out of it XD. People do MATH to decide on fics to read???

yeah that was wild to me too. Never would have guessed that people did ratio math for that, but these days, I'm not terribly surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised. Anyway. Summaries and tags are definitely my go to, with the tags being a sort of summary part 2. Usually there's a tag in there that'll make me more excited, but I have some turn-offs too. (Back in the Olden Days, I went in blind and was either good shocked or bad shocked by whatever I read, but I normally finished those suckers anyway ahaha.)

Okay so, I really love slit pupils, I'm never gonna complain about that in character design at any point because it always looks cool. By all means give Jamil slit pupils. It fucks.

But

I also want people to know that many snakes (venomous and nonvenomous both) do have round pupils, and dark grey is a common eye color. And more specifically, most species of cobra tend to have dark grey eyes with round pupils exactly like Jamil's, which idk if it was intentional or not, but it's dope character design imo. Only difference is cobra eyes tend to have a thin golden-brown ring around the iris, which you can kinda see here, but there's definitely more pronounced ones

Anyway, my new headcanon is Jamil having golden rings that appear when he uses his UM thanks for reading
