💋 Before the 2003 Supreme Court ruling in Lawrence v. Texas, same-smex smexual activity was illegal in fourteen U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. military

👶 Before 2015, LGBTQ+ couples couldn’t adopt in all 50 states. Before the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, laws varied wildly by state.

🏳️‍🌈 Before 1973, the American Psychiatric Association listed homosmexuality as a ‘mental illness.’ In December 1973, a vote was successfully held to remove it.

🗳️ Before 1974, there were no openly gay elected officials. That changed with Kathy Kozachenko, who became the first openly gay American elected to public office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

My for you page rn feels like I’m watching a bunch of people I don’t follow vaguing each other about tgcf discourse without directly commenting on each others’ posts, as if it’s tempting me to jump in…

Anyways, my two cents is that Xie Lian didn’t “need” to learn that “you can’t save everyone” because the message of tgcf is that we shouldn’t privilege some people’s lives over others’, that everyone is deserving of life and dignity, and the act of privileging is exactly why conflict and wars and genocide happen. The point of Xie Lian shouting “I WON’T CHANGE” in the final confrontation with Jun Wu—who quite literally wants “you can’t save everyone” to be the lesson Xie Lian learns—is that Jun Wu is wrong, always has been wrong, and always will be wrong. The lesson isn’t “you can’t save them all,” it’s that you should try anyways. The people you tried to save will remember. The people you agreed to sacrifice will also remember.
