PROBLEM

I was looking up The Perikarnassian(s) for this post when I noticed something I hadn't seen before. It's obvious in hindsight, but in the list of names in the back of Sacred and Terrible Air we have the brief history of Elysium listed out:

The splitting of the isolas is a historical event we don't actually know anything about. But it turns out we actually do, from my favorite source of lore, Coalition Warship Archer

What could this Perikarnassian Incident be?

Joyce Messier - "*Entroponetics*," she corrects, "is the scientific study of the pale. Or a recent iteration of it, by way of Graad. The study of the pale reaches back 6,000 years -- the Perikarnassians called it the Western Plain." Rhetoric - They had not travelled the entire circumference of the Perikarnassian super-isola. It was not merely in the West -- it was everywhere. Even then; surrounding them...

super-isola!!! there's a term we've never heard before!!! I speculate that the splitting of the Isolas is put right after Ancient Mass Society - something we know to be about the Perikarnassians:

Andre - "And [the Founding Party] have roots in ancient mass society." He pauses. "And they're the custodians of the Perikarnassian Church. Plus they anoint the innocence. They, like, made the innocentic system, no?"

The polycarpeum, which predates the splitting of the isolas, presumably has something to do with this guy, listed right after Pius of Perikarnassis in the opening list of names in SATA:

I briefly looked up the IRL Polycarp, it's an interesting biblical reference we probably don't have the context to understand? So let's add up the clues we have: there was apparently a super-isola named after the Perikarnassians (*probably* meaning they were contemporary with it). Interestingly though there is a 2000 year gap between when written history begins; the so-called 'Perikarnassian Incident' and the study of the pale begins.

Because the Moralintern seems to have a pretty good understanding of entroponetics, I'm inclined to assume that the Perikarnassian Incident must have resulted in the splitting of the isolas, but that 2000 year gap says otherwise. I would go so far as to say the gap indicates that the Pale postdates the Perikarnassians, but the significance of this is hard to speculate about.

P.S.

Another inconsistency I found in ancient Elysian history while researching this has to do with the list that I cited at the beginning of this post. The Seraseolitic Civilization is listed as before Ancient Mass Society (most likely referring to the Perikarnassians for reasons already explained here). However this civilization actually postdates the perikarnassians significantly:

Encyclopedia - And the 4,000-year-old Seraseolitic civilization buried so deep in the sediment that you do not even know it is there -- they too did not see me.

There are a few possible explanations for why this is:

the list is wrong / out of date and this was retconned by the time of disco elysium (there is precedent for this as the distance from Revachol in the pale in the cut epilogue to SATA is different from the one listed in Disco Elysium)

as pointed out in a discord I'm in Encyclopedia could just be talking about the one that made it to Le Caillou? Again though 4000 years is a pretty long time so I'm not convinced by this? But maybe 'seraseolitic' is such a broad term it could be applied to such a large timescale? I don't know ancient history that well.
