Was thinking about this description of Mordred from the Vulgate Lancelot today.
"he had curly, blond hair and would have had a very handsome face...
...if his demeanor had not been not so wicked."

Was Mordred a blonde? I mean let’s suppose that he actually existed… I always imagined him looking like Morgana or even Lancelot… 🙂
THIS GAVE ME FLASHBACKS of bald Mordred.... I think Elizabeth Weins one time said "bald mordred" and I have never forgotten
I actually like every Mordred!! White hair, blond hair, brown, black red!
#I always imagined Mordred having black hair due to watching 1998 Merlin at a young age#but blonde Mordred has grown on me more and more#Makes him seem more traditionally angelic

It's pretty sad that there are still people online that believe and repeat that bogus "Bedivere is a dark sorcerer" fakelore.
Like, don't get me wrong: there are Magic Knights in Camelot but Bedivere is not one of them.

(Source: Culhwch and Olwen)
There are actually other werewolves in Arthur's court beyond Sir Marrok/Melion: two whelps named Gwyddrud and Gwydden Astrus, the sons of the she-wolf Rhymi. It brings to mind the Legend of Romulus and Remus from Roman Myth.
Although, the narrative in Culhwch is a bit confused with them: the two whelps appear to be already part of the court during Culhwch's enumeration, but later on Culhwch, they are part of the many tasks that Arthur has to resolved. A simple explanation could be an error on the writer's part or that Rhymi actually has four sons, with the two named ones having their curses already lifted.
On a sidenote, I love that a lot of the supernatural members of Arthur's court aren't singular or the only ones of their type present in Camelot. Galehaut isn't the only part-giant/giant member of the Round Table. Menw ap Teirgwaedd isn't the only Magic Knight on Arthur's payroll. And Gwyn ap Nudd isn't only divine being hanging out in the open with the knights and ladies.
So its nice that Marrok has some other werewolves (probably younger than him) to talk to.

Hmmm
Of King Arthur's mistresses/concubines, Indeg seems to be the most notable of them. She has her own wikipedia page.
One day, writers will have to use her in their stories lol

Something I’ve been thinking about all day since I first looked at it is that looking at Beowulf it seems like one possible translation of the word cenned in line 12 is “to generate” and in that context it probably shouldn’t be translated like that but I kind of want to because I would like to write the phrase “so after that he generated some babies” in my very serious translation but I don’t think that’s the intended vibe.
#beowulf#I read a little bit of the Headley translation and was instantly put off by the frat bro speak

Oh, dear lord... I'm DOMINATING the "Arthurian Legends" tag
I seem to be the most regular user of that poor tag lol.
You could almost call it the "Gawrkin Archive" cuz I'm eating every inch of that page
EDIT: it starts to get a little more balanced around the March mark but still...

(Source: The High History of the Grail/Perlesvaus)
The description of Gawain's childhood here shows that Perlesvaus positions itself in the same continuity as De Ortu Waluuanii/Rise of Gawain. This opens to some very interesting implications for the wider narrative, such as, for example, Morgause being Uther's daughter.
Gawain nearly becoming Emperor of Rome adds to the long list of shenanigans we've all come to know and love about Gawain.
#arthuriana#arthurian legends#perlesvaus#de ortu waluuanii#sir gawain#I will always be fascinated by the De Ortu Waluuanii version of Gawain's origins
