Bungou Stray Dogs Gaiden Chapter 4 is finally completed, sorry for the wait everyone! This time around, Ayatsuji-sensei is being forced into holding a party horn to celebrate the birthday of Silver, one of the team’s translators! (Also because Silver loves that stubborn sensei and couldn’t accept him not celebrating.)

We’re still a bit behind, but we remain energetic and vigilant in the face of Tsujimura’s blessed appearance in Dead Apple. We will be caught up soon enough, so thank you for continuing to support us!

i’d like to add that these conditions go for the content of this, my (lette’s) personal translation blog as well

i’m not comfortable with re-translations, partially because there is a lot of work i put into doing all this, even if it might not seem like it, and partially because im fond of loose translations that make a sentence work in english while retaining meaning but that, when re-translated, might end up being misconstrued or misunderstood.

please understand, editing and translation is a lot more work than it seems, and co-opting someone else’s hard work without permission for your own credit is incredibly rude.

In light of recent events regarding translations in the bsd community I’ve seen (primarily with well known translators and dazaiscans) as well as a recent ask that was received, some things have been added to the manga faq of this blog which I will post here for everyone’s convenience:

Can we use your scans to translate into x language?

No. Teal Girl Defense Scans, as a team, respectfully ask that you do not use our scans, nor our translations. There is a lot of effort put into translating, redrawing, and typesetting and we don’t like the idea of people freeloading off our hard work.

We have not given permission to anyone to repost our scans. If they are on other sites or blogs, please inform us so we may address the issue and confront those responsible. The people linked on the manga faq are not affiliated with any other translation groups that have intentions of releasing the gaiden manga in another language.

On the sixth day, I've found a new item, a youthful☆uniform If I wear this, I'll be three times more powerful and we'll party after school, yeah☆ On the seventh day, I flood my TL with "I'm a girl!!" This is the best thing ever! I've seen the light of hope & demanded it bow to me! After a few finishing arrangements, I've completed becoming the cutest girl of all time I could hardly contain my emotions So just for now, So just for now, So just for now, I'll play some Granblue!

this was simultaneously one of the easiest and one of the hardest songs ive ever had to translate. also yeah she does mention the book of genesis by name so my running theory that both judaism and christianity are in granblue is basically canon now. shes super meta tho.  this is looser than my translations usually are but im really trying to experiment more with making it sound good and keeping the feeling over 1:1.

For context, this happens directly after episode 1 of the anime. In the manga, Himeralda helps Hayashi with grinding the ice castle dungeon to try to obtain the crystal rose for Lily, so that’s why Himeralda knows enough to tell Pokotarou about it. Also potentially relevant: Pokotarou is the guild’s vice/sub guildmaster.

mermaid melody turns 15 in april of next year and i, not being able to handle this fact, decided to retranslate a song i know at least three other people have translated in the last 15 years. 

i’ve been crying over this song since 2008 and i thought i was over it but as i was reading the lyrics i cried again so hey, pretty neat

Notes:

I really had no good way to make this obvious in the translation, but I think a fact lost on a lot of the English fandom is that Kajii’s “Lemon Bomb” ability is pronounced “Lemonade”. It literally made me appreciate him about 80% more just finding out that fact. Also, I’ve tried to phrase this song about halfway between “a scientific paper” and “the way Lemon by IRL kajii is phrased in the translation I have”, so pardon me if it sounds overly intellectual and rambling, that was absolutely the point.

i dont know if you’ve ever read undefeated by the rain by the actual kenji miyazawa, but if you haven’t, there’s a translation here or on Wikipedia. anyway, that being said, i really love BSD kenji’s character because his personality is literally designed to be the kind of person miyazwa is describing in the poem! he is this kind, honest person who literally just wants to help people and wants everyone to be friends.  this song doesn’t perfectly parallel the poem, of course, but it does make so many references that it’s hard to ignore the poem being so important to BSD kenji’s character. like, it is so important that the parallels between kenji and the topic of the poem be noticed that the “this is the kind of person i am” line of the song in japanese quotes the japanese of the poem’s “this is...the person i strive to become” (to the point of using サウイフ for そういう, as in the original poem). i tried to mirror that by phrasing it similarly to how the translations i linked above do it.
