WON'T BE USING TUMBLR STARTING 7/14 UNTIL I BEAT DONKEY KONG BANANZA (AND MAYBE SHADOW LABYRINTH IF THAT GAME ENDS UP BEING GOOD ENOUGH) TO AVOID SPOILERS. PROBABLY DOESN'T MATTER SINCE VERY FEW, IF ANY, PEOPLE EVEN COME HERE, BUT STILL.In the off chance anyone comes here: I like video games (mostly, but not exclusively, Nintendo stuff), and have no other real hobbies.Aro, most likely Ace (still trying to figure that one out).

Eh, it's close enough to the end of 7/13, and by extension the start of 7/14, so my self-imposed restriction on social media (...which I guess mostly means Tumblr and YouTube) begins in a few minutes.
When I return, I shall be a new person! A better person! A person who has experienced a 3D Donkey Kong game blind!
...and also PAC-MAN's 2nd midlife crisis...
...and maybe I'll beat Tears of the Kingdom while I'm at it...
...should probably also replay Super Mario Odyssey before Bananza. See how much of an improvement the Switch 2 update is...
...maybe start exercising again...
(In all seriousness, taking a step back from... basically the internet as a whole can only really be a good thing, right? Let's just hope I have the willpower to do it properly... bah, who am I kidding. It's not like the internet is specifically made to be addictive or anything, right?)

Initial Switch 2 Thoughts After Having One In My Possession For About 3 Days
- Mario Kart World is pretty good!... admittedly not $80 good, but I got it with the bundle, and at that price, I think it's a much better deal.
- I've also started replaying Mario & Luigi Brothership, and the load times are far, FAR less obnoxious than they were on Switch 1!
- The only other game I've played a significant amount of is Pac-Man World (haven't gone past the first world prior to this. So far, it's a pretty good game! Not exactly relevant to the rest of the post, though.) and... well, that game didn't have any problems running on the Switch 1 that I remember, but it runs well on the Switch 2, too.
- Haven't had a chance to try Gamecube Classics yet (currently waiting for an update to download. I'll try F-Zero GX as soon as I can). I did very briefly try Paper Mario 64, and... I think the menus aren't as laggy, but that may just be a placebo effect. Not sure if the Switch 2's better hardware would even have an effect on the emulated NSO games upon further inspection, I do think PM64 is still about as laggy as it was on Switch 1.
-- If anyone here has the free time to test it (or has already played through PM64 on Switch 2); is the Lava Piranha fight still incredibly laggy? Just curious. I'm sure I'll be finding out for myself at some point, anyways.
- I do often find myself accidentally pressing the Gamechat button when I mean to press the Home button. Not a major issue, but it seemed worth noting.
- Removing the Joy-Cons doesn't feel as great as the Switch 1; after pressing the detach button, you have to give it a bit of a pull, which... even knowing that that's how it's (probably) supposed to work, I always feel like I'm going to accidentally break it by doing so. There probably isn't an actual risk, but it's a $500 console, so you can hopefully understand why I wouldn't want to be that rough with it.
-- Thankfully, clicking them back into place feels MUCH better than taking them out, and they feel perfectly sturdy in handheld mode.
- Still (essentially) the same boring UI, with the same 2 basic themes... of which only one is even decent. It's a perfectly fine UI, of course, but a bit more pizzazz would be nice.
-- Only truly unhinged people use light mode, and I will maintain this stance even after I die.
- Not great that my current Switch 1 MicroSD won't work, but I guess there's some hardware-related reason for that I wouldn't understand.
- HOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT, the stand isn't complete garbage anymore! Also, they added a charging port on top, so you can charge it while it's standing!
-- Honestly, I have to wonder why it wasn't already like this with the Switch 1... but again, I don't really understand how hardware works. My computer knowledge is limited entirely to software and "have you tried turning it off and on again?".
- Haven't tried it docked yet. I'm sure it's fine, but I only ever used my Switch 1 in handheld (except in the admittedly rare occasions I connected it to my television to play while I'm exercising... damn, I should get back to doing that when I have the chance.), and don't see my experience with the Switch 2 being any different.
- Obligatory "They're charging $10 for the instruction manual".
-- ...what? Were you expecting a review of the Welcome Tour? I didn't buy it, and I'm never going to. There are perfectly good YouTubers who have already done that anyways.
- I did have a chance to try GameChat, and yeah, it works pretty well!
- My bluetooth headphones have a noticable audio delay when connected to it... though I'm not sure if that's a problem with the console or my headphones. Thankfully, the Switch 2 still has a headphone jack.
- Also, you can set a password to unlock the Switch 2 now. Another thing that feels like it really should've been a thing on the Switch 1.
- Lastly... the screen's bigger. Your mileage may very vary, but I like it.
-- Keep in mind, I can't exactly say how practical it would be to try and use during a car ride because I would likely get really bad motion sickness regardless of screen size.
SO... is it worth the price of admission?
...well, it was for me, but for the hypothetical reader that isn't sure if they want a Switch 2 or not, and is probably never going to find this post anyways?
...as a general rule, if you aren't 100% sure about rather or not you want to buy literally anything that costs this much, the answer's probably "no". Besides, if you want one that badly, you'll probably be able to find a used one later down the line for less anyways.
That said, it absolutely does seem to be a straight-up upgrade over the Switch 1, and, if you ask me, can effectively replace it, so if you, like me, both have the money to spend and are more than happy to spend it on what is essentially a better Switch? Then yeah, go for it!
That should cover all my thoughts on the console. I guess if my opinions change drastically later on, I'll make another post.

According to the article, this was confirmed by Nintendo Treehouse staff during a preview event. If anyone finds more concrete evidence (or evidence that this is false), feel free to show it off.
I do think this was something basically everyone saw coming, but if this article is telling the truth, it's nice to have it properly confirmed.
This does also solidify, at least for me, that this is effectively the Switch 2's "3D Mario", so that's exciting! I assume this means an actual 3D Mario won't be happening for a few years (...heck, we may not even get a new mainline Mario in general, unless they already have a team working on a sequel to Wonder), but I'm fine with DK getting the spotlight this time! He deserves it.
(Not that I wasn't fine with it anyways, but marathoning the Donkey Kong Countries in preparation gave me a far greater appreciation for him and his cast, so that makes it even more exciting! Now, I just have to hope I can acquire a Switch 2 before Bananza...)

Damn, Arkham Origins isn't Steam Deck compatable? That sucks :(.
For my money, the Deathstroke fight is pretty good... but it does kinda highlight that Arkham combat was designed specifically for taking on multiple enemies at once, and wasn't really made for one-on-one fights. It's not especially challenging... but given it's so early in the game, maybe that's intentional, and I'm just being too harsh on it (plus, my problems could absolutely just be personal issues that nobody else would notice or care about). It's certainly a spectacle, if nothing else.
...and... yeah. It's certainly better than the absolute embarassment that Rocksteady thought would make a good Deathstroke fight in Arkham Knight. Again, Knight's my favorite of the trilogy, but having Deathstroke, one of the very few characters in the entire Arkhamverse who can take Batman in a straight-up fight without henchmen backing him up, and having him fight exclusively in a big-ass tank before getting one-shotted in a cutscene... utterly pathetic.
I just have to wonder what the story was there. Like... did they have a more elaborate fight planned that they had to cut for money/time reasons? Or did they really just throw him in because they didn't figure having that tank be piloted by just another Militia guy was good enough? Because it's pretty clear that, in the final game, there's basically no reason for Deathstroke to even be there.
Gah... okay, I'm done complaining about that.
I guess once you finish Arkham Knight, if you happen to be in the mood for another video game adaptation of a comic book superhero that lets you punch large groups of people in the face, I would absolutely recommend giving Insomniac's Spider-Man games a try as well... aaaaaaaaassuming those games are Steam Deck compatable, you have a PS5, or that you haven't already played them.
Since I see you've been playing through the Arkham games recently, and that happens to be a series I'm quite fond of: what are your opinions on the series so far?
Really enjoying it! I love how creepy Asylum is, it’s like borderline horror. The environments feel downright claustrophobic at times and it serves the atmosphere perfectly. I even enjoyed the final boss, despite its reputation :P
My opinion might change over time, but currently I think I prefer City. The story is just so good. I already knew some of the major plot beats of the trilogy cuz my sibling has spent years geeking out to me ( @autism-swagger hiiiii) but I was still on the edge of my seat. Hugo Strange is so compelling. He’s cold and evil and Corey Burton plays him so well.
Also, I love playing as Catwoman. Any game that lets me be a girl gets a few extra points by default. Also I want her to beat me up. I’ve only done a fraction of the side quests, so I’m gonna try and wrap those up before moving on to Arkham Knight.
Speaking of side quests, I wanna talk about the two I have finished. Mad Hatter’s quest was super creepy and caught me completely off guard. 10/10. Bane’s side quest was so disappointing though. You’re telling me that the 300+ pound strategic genius who has overpowered and outsmarted Batman before got tricked into charging into an open cage. And you’re telling me he can’t just punch his way out? Lame.
Also, I thought most of the boss fights were a step up from the previous game. The only Asylum boss that really stood out to me was Poison Ivy. But in City, I really enjoyed fighting Solomon Grundy, Clayface, and especially Mr. Freeze. Speaking of, I really hope this series has more stealth bosses going forward. Freeze just outshines all the combat bosses so hard and I want more shit like him.
I’ll probably think of more things to say, but I’m out of time for the moment :P Thanks for the ask though! I’d love to hear your opinions on the series as well

Even as someone who doesn't enjoy straight-up horror, there absolutely is something about Arkham Asylum's environment that is just... so damn good. The term I generally use for it is "horror-flavored", though I'm sure there's a more proper word for it that I'm not aware of.
It's unfortunate that none of the later games really manage to recreate that, but I suppose it's a natural consequence of them going in a more Open-World direction. I imagine it's rather difficult to make a big ol' open space that you can practically fly around in feel especially claustrophobic.
I'd say I'm rather lukewarm on TITAN Joker. It's a fine fight, but they really don't do enough with the idea of someone with all the power of a TITAN and none of the loss of intellect. On one hand, I guess it makes from a story perspective: Joker is never shown to be much of a fighter in this series, he only used TITAN in the first place to try and force Batman to give in to it, and I'd say it's pretty in-character for him to leave most of the actual fighting to his goons while he just poses for the news helicopters. On the other hand, from a gameplay perspective, it means the final boss is effectively just a regular combat encounter, but with explosive teeth and occasional moments of needing to run from the boss until he gets tired of chasing Batman.
Personally, Arkham City is my least favorite of the trilogy, but only because I consider it an 8/10 compared to the other two being 9s.
I'll admit, my opinion on Arkham City's story occasionally kinda... flip-flops, I guess? However, I acknowledge I am also, in fact, not great at analyzing stories. Ultimately, I think it serves its purpose just fine, and my only really major gripe with it is Batman and Talia's relationship, but I'll spare you that rant unless you really want to hear it, for some reason.
Also, yeah, Hugo Strange! Sometimes I wish he had more of a presence in the story (beyond just being a voice on the intercoms)... but at the same time, you could argue the fact he stays in the background for most of the game makes it more impactful when he DOES show up in person, so... (*shrug*).
I also like that Catwoman is playable, both because she has infinitely more chemistry with Batman than Talia does her and Batman's personalities contrast and play off each other in a fun way, and because having multiple playable characters is just a nice way to add some variety. It probably would've been a much more obvious choice to have the extra story sections be given to Robin, so I'm glad they went with the less obvious choice... besides, it's not like Robin gets completely left out in terms of relevance to the series.
I absolutely would recommend completing all of City's side-quests before Knight, both because a couple of them get followed up on in Knight's side-quests, and because hurting Riddler's feelings is an integral part of the Batman: Arkham experience... oh, and completing Riddles gets you backstory stuff, but hurting Riddler's feelings is the more important reason to do it.
City's bosses are, in my opinion, the best in the trilogy. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say Knight doesn't even come close... and that's speaking as someone who considers Knight my favorite of the trilogy.
Also, I guess one more thing to mention: Arkham Origins, in my opinion, has the best story of any of the Arkham games I've played (...which doesn't include Arkham Shadow. I literally bought a VR headset for it, and could play it whenever I want, but I got distracted by I Expect You To Die and just never got around to it)... but the gameplay kinda just boils down to "Arkham City But Less Polished", and it's not at all necessary to understand Knight's story (two villains from Origins appear in Knight's side-quests, but the only context you really need for them is that Batman fought them prior to the events of Knight). That said, it does also include Bane as a far more dangerous and intelligent villain, so if you were disappointed by his portrayal in City, you might be interested in seeing that.
Also, Origins!Batman is voiced by Roger Craig Smith, who also voices Sonic the Hedgehog.
I think that's officially everything I have to say... and it took me a very long time to type it all out. Glad to hear you're enjoying the series! I look forward to seeing what you think of Arkham Knight!
