the thing about the ending of sirens is i truly didnt expect it. i truly expected simone to walk away. and thats why i was damn near sobbing on the couch when she walked out in that dress a spitting image of michaela. another girl with a lot of hardship in her past, perfect for this rich man to pursue, and for him to make her feel safe and valued, another woman trapped by manipulation like those who came before her and will come after her

I will give Sirens (2025) one thing: they did a hell of a job exploring the many ways that under patriarchy men are socialized to aspire to or see themselves as family men while doing none of the work of being a father and husband.
Ray spends most of his free time cheating on his wife, even promising to leave her and his kids for his mistress. And he only decides to prioritize his family once said mistress tells him to get fuckt in no uncertain terms.
Ethan, without even consulting the woman he wants to make his wife (who he knows next to nothing about and whose wants and needs he does not respect), envisions for them an idyllic home of cherubic children but clearly has given no thought to the realities of that life and what it would require of him.
José is the ideal patriarchal provider, earning a comfortable income for his family, but that's where his contribution starts and ends as he seems to be at the Kells' beck and call 24/7. There is no indication that he ever leaves the Cliff House estate to spend time with or care for his own family.
And Peter estranges himself from his children from his first marriage, blaming his second wife who he treats like a disposable place holder since she is unable to bear him children until the next model comes around and he gets a chance to start over again.
Edit: Forgot Bruce, who wants to take credit for and remember fondly the daughters he neglected and abused.

Netflix's Sirens asks an important question: What if Kevin Bacon was actually Henry the 8th?

the way sirens starts by framing michaela as a sinister figure manipulating simone into ostensibly worshiping her, but gradually reveals that actually she's just a severely isolated and deeply lonely woman who resorted to hiring an assistant who could essentially be her best friend and yet her husband still finds a way to take that from her and use that against her to rip away what little scraps of independence he's allotted her over the years

One thing I love about Netflix's Sirens (2025) is that they actually explore the hard choices that are made to escape poverty and dysfunctional families. I felt so much for Devon when she said that she knew what was happening to Simone, but she chose to stay away because she was so desperate to be free from the situation. Even Simone and the ending, without her job, she literally had nothing. She would have to go back to that house, her dad, and know what it's like on the other side but be forced to stay below the line.
It's refreshing to have such a true reflection of what poverty does to people and how it can feel impossible to escape it. So of course, when the opportunity presents itself, it truly feels like your one chance to get out, and to turn it away? It feels like a true death sentence.
Anyways, I just appreciate the story Sirens was going for, and it really spoke to me in regards to how impossible it can feel to leave a bad situation - family or living.
