Sidestep for Victory - An analysis of Techno and Dream's dynamic

Techno and Dream’s dynamic is pretty unique amongst the relationships on the server. Before they were forced to spend three months stuck together in a cell with little to do, they weren’t really friends. In truth, they weren’t even really allies. During the times they worked together, they did so because they trusted that their goals aligned, not because they trusted one another. 

Yet, they’re also far from enemies. Rivals, the fandom calls them, but they don’t exactly compete against one another. Mostly, they prefer to stay out of the other’s way, when they’re not actively helping each other that is. 

Techno and Dream are peers in a way they don’t really have with anyone else. Their skills allow them to be confident in their ability to handle threats and enemies with everyone else. But with each other, it’s not that simple. 

A fight between them is, at best, a coin flip. An equal chance for each other to emerge victorious. At worst, it would drain both their resources before the defeated escapes. While Dream is a risk taker and Techno is more risk aversed, neither is stupid about it. A fight where the possibility of victory is so uncertain and the costs of both winning and losing are so big is not a good fight to pick. This is a sentiment both expressed at one point or another: 

BBH: “Techno you wanna help us kill Dream?” Techno: “Nah, I’m out of here. He has creative mode, I don’t want to mess with that guy.” (3:12:15)

Dream: “Probably the only person on the server that I wouldn’t necessarily want to go engage in battle with is Technoblade. Just because I know he has his ways.” (4:21:50)

This aversion to fight one another is the key to understanding the basis of their dynamic and subsequently, their relationship.
