Is TrueCrypt Safe to Use: Know Its Current Status
TrueCrypt was an extremely popular hard drive encryption tool that was a free and open source option. But the users were forced to give up the use of this tool by none other than the TrueCrypt’s developers. Surprisingly, on May 2014, the anonymous developers of this tool posted a warning at the SalesForce website, that they are abandoning this tool, and hence won’t be releasing any security updates. The developers even recommended the users to switch to other alternative options of hard drive encryption software. The third-party audits on this software are going on to find out if the software has any unfixed security issues.
Tumblr media
Although many security audits are out, and these reports reveal that there are no as such backdoors or security loopholes in the software. But yet it is risky to use this tool further because it doesn’t have any official author, who will be releasing the security updates.
Why TrueCrypt Got Discontinued?
The accurate reason behind the sudden abandoning of this software is yet not clear. A body of market experts suggests that the service of this software came to an end because the Microsoft ended its support for XP. Till Windows XP, TrueCrypt was in demand because XP doesn’t have any inbuilt encryption tool. But, modern Windows operating systems as well as Linux and Mac OS X operating systems have inbuilt hard drive encryption tool. For instance Windows OS has BitLocker, Mac OS X has the FileVault, and different versions of Linux have various inbuilt hard disk encrypting tools. That means whether you use Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, your OS will have an inbuilt hard disk encryption software program. Thus, this will make TrueCrypt less required. That is why probably, the TrueCrypt’s developers felt that the tool is no more useful.
However, this is just a rumor, the exact reason for abandoning the tool is still not clear. Apart from this reason, there are many other rumors. Some sources have exposed that the software got discontinued because some government agency forced the developers to do so.
Tumblr media
Irrespective of the reason, the bottom-line fact is that this tool is now discontinued, and thus no more receiving any official updates. Therefore, it’s better for the users to start using alternative to TrueCrypt.
What Users Should Do Now?
However, it is also essential to highlight that the third-party audit of this tool has also revealed that there are no as such security loopholes or backdoors in the software. There are no recorded security breaches identified with this hard drive encryption software. However, it is yet not safe to use this tool because a software program that is not receiving security updates will eventually become compromised for sure. Thus, if any user is still using this tool, then it is advisable that he or she should decrypt the TrueCrypt’s data, and get the data encrypted by some other hard drive encryption tool. Some of the available alternative options are as follows:
• BitLocker • FileVault • VeraCrypt • AES Crypt • DiskCryptor • EncFS • CipherShed
Conclusion
With this blog, you have got a clear idea of the current status of this tool. It is currently an abandoned tool that is not receiving any security updates. Third party audits are gonging on, and results have revealed that the tool doesn’t have any security loophole. But, it is not safe to use an abandoned tool. Since, it was an open source tool and its codes were available to all. So, some developers have developed new hard drive encryption tools based on the TrueCrypt’s code after doing substantial rewriting. These tools are more advanced and secured. VeraCrypt and CipherShed are two such open source software based on TrueCrypt’s code. Apart from that modern operating system’s inbuilt disk encrypting tools such as BitLocker and FileVault if you want, you can use these inbuilt tools as well.

Expert Tips to Repair “0x0000003B” Blue Screen Error on Your PC
Imagine that you are doing some crucial work on your computer, and it shuts down suddenly. The next time you power on your PC, it shows you a blue screen with an error message. The screen that appears is also referred as Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and it appears when your PC encounters a fatal system error causing a system crash. In the current blog, you will get familiar with the blue screen error “STOP: 0x0000003B,” that appears on your PC running Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
Tumblr media
BSOD occurs when your PC encounters a fatal system error that leads to a computer crash. It may occur due to any hardware failure, corrupt device drivers, missing crucial Windows or DLL files, etc. When BSOD appears on your PC screen, you must take an immediate action for instant PC repair, or else it may damage your other vital PC components. Read the complete blog to know about the steps you can perform when your PC encounters a BSOD. On your PC running Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2, you may receive blue screen error due to several reasons. It may be difficult to cover all the scenarios in a single blog. Therefore, you will read the two common scenarios in which the BSOD appears on your Windows 7, or Windows 8 Server PC.
Scenario 1: When ‘Rdpdr.sys’ tries to reference an unavailable memory location.
Tumblr media
Your PC may crash intermittently, and the following error message may appear on the computer screen:
“STOP: 0x0000003B (0000000080000003, parameter2, parameter3, 0000000000000000)”
The error occurs when ‘Rdpdr.sys’ system file tries to allocate an unavailable memory on your PC. There is a Hotfix available on the Microsoft’s official website that applies to the problem. You can download the respective Hotfix from the website, and run it on your computer to fix the issue. You can also seek help from a reliable computer tech professional, or search for other PC troubleshooting methods available online.
Scenario 2: When ‘D3D9’ runtime fails to perform parameter validation.
While running certain applications like Cyberlink YouCam, you may receive the following error message on your computer screen:
“Stop 0x0000003B (c0000094, fffff8800ff22e54, fffff880098897f0, 0) SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION”
The error occurs when ‘D3D9’ runtime application fails to validate the rectangle values passed by applications like YouCam. Therefore, the incorrect rectangle coordinates get passed to the ‘Dxgkrnl.sys’ component. However, the ‘Dxgkrnl.sys’ component also fails to validate the rectangle values, and thus causes a “Divide by Zero” exception. To resolve the issue, you can access the Microsoft’s official website to download and run the respective Hotfix download that applies to the computer problem.
If you face trouble while obtaining the Hotfix from the website, then you can visit your nearest PC repair shop, or connect to an online computer support technician to get your PC issues fixed. You can also use the steps mentioned below to obtain the Hotfix from the Microsoft official website.
How to Download and Run Hotfix on Your PC?
1. First, go to the Microsoft's support website. 2. In the search box, type your error code, and then press ‘ENTER’ on the keyboard. 3. A list of Knowledge Base articles will appear on the screen. 4. Locate, and select the article that relates to your computer problem. 5. After finding the article, open it, and then check for the respective Hotfix download. 6. If the Hotfix download is available, then click the ‘Hotfix Download Available’ blue button at the top-left. 7. Now, you may see ‘Microsoft Services terms and conditions agreement’ page. 8. On the page, click the ‘I Accept’ option. 9. Type your email address, and then select the operating system. 10. Also, type the text available in CAPTCHA image, and then select ‘Request Hotfix’ to receive the Hotfix. 11. Once you click the ‘Request Hotfix,’ you may receive an email from the Microsoft. 12. The email may contain the ‘URL’ to download the Hotfix on your PC. 13. Now, click the ‘URL’ to start the download, and then save it on your PC facing the problem. 14. Once the Hotfix gets downloaded on your PC, try to locate it. 15. After locating the Hotfix, run the Hotfix installer file to start the installation process. 16. Now, keep following the on-screen instructions to install the Hotfix. 17. Once Hotfix gets installed successfully, restart the computer. 18. Check, if your PC issue gets resolved.
If the Hotfix gets downloaded and installed properly, then you may not receive the same error. However, you need to know that Hotfix can only help you in fixing a specific problem on your PC. It may not resolve other computer problems, and downloading the incorrect Hotfix may damage other PC components. Therefore, download the Hotfix cautiously, or you can also consult a local computer tech person to fix your computer.
Conclusion
In the blog mentioned above you read about the two common scenarios in which the “0x0000003B” blue screen error appears on your PC running Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2.  You also read about downloading, and installing the Hotfix on your computer to fix a specific PC issue. If you're still getting the error after installing the respective Hotfix, then you should connect to a reputed computer support company to avail a quick resolution for all sorts of computer problems.

TrueCrypt Tutorial: How to Get Started With This Hard Drive Encryption Software?
Nowadays, most of the individuals have their personal computer or laptop. In these devices, they keep a variety of financial as well as personal data, such as bank statements, property details, etc. If you too store sensitive information on your laptop or PC, then your data can get into risk in case your hard drive (hardware) gets stolen. Thus, not just your online data, but even your hard drive data needs encryption security. TrueCrypt is a popular and effective hard drive encryption tool that can help in enhancing the security of your hard drive data. In this blog, you will read more about this tool.
Tumblr media
About TrueCrypt
It is an open-source full-disk hard drive encryption tool that encrypts the data stored on your system’s hard drive. Using the tool, you can create a virtual volume, also known as a container. Any information or data stored in this virtual container will automatically get encrypted that means the data will exist in a cryptic format. As you know, any data or text in a cryptic format can neither be read nor understood. Thus, even if someone steals your hard drive (hardware) and connects it to another computer to get access to the data stored on it, the thief will get nothing else but just the cryptic text. The only way to access the TrueCrypt’s encrypted data in its readable format is to mount (unlocking) the encrypted container. That is possible only if you use the authorized password. That means only those people, who have the authorized password, will be able to mount (unlock) or dismount (lock) the encrypted container to access the data stored in it.
Tumblr media
It is a highly popular tool that is compatible with Windows XP and later versions, many versions of Mac OS X and Linux. But its developers are anonymous programmers and still unidentified. The tool can encrypt the whole disk, external hard drive and a partition on the disk. Read below to learn how to create an encrypted container using this hard drive encryption software.
How to Use the Hard Drive Encryption Software?
•    Run the tool on your computer. •    Next, click the button ‘Create Volume.’ •    Now, a wizard will open up. •    On the first window, select ‘Create an encrypted file container.’ •    Next, select ‘Standard TrueCrypt Volume.’ •    In the next window, select a location where you want to save the volume. •  You need to store the volume of a newly created file. Don’t use an already existing file. Give the newly created file a name. •    On the next window, select an encryption algorithm. Usually, people go for AES.
Tumblr media
•    On the next window, select a size for the encrypted volume. •    Now, choose a strong password for the encrypted container/volume. •    On the next window, keep moving your mouse cursor randomly that will strengthen the cryptic keys. •    Then, click ‘Next.’ •    Next, choose a ‘File System’ for the encrypted volume. Choose NTFS, if your encrypted data is over 4GB. •    Next, click ‘Format.’ •    Now, move back to the desktop. •    Here, open TrueCrypt. •    Then, click the button ‘Select File.’ •    Then, navigate to the file that you have created to store your encrypted files. •    Now, select an open drive letter. •    Next, click the ‘Mount’ button. •    Next, you will be prompted to type the password you had just created. •    Check, Windows Explorer. Here, you can see the encrypted volume just like a separate drive. But it is a virtual drive.
Conclusion
By choosing to encrypt your hard drive data, you are strengthening and ensuring its security. Only those who have the authorized password will be able to access the data. No one will be able to access the data as encrypted data exists in an unreadable format. Even if your hard drive gets stolen, the data will remain safe as it will exist in the cryptic format that can neither be read nor understood.

Different Types of Scans You Can Perform Using Malwarebytes Free
Malicious codes, stubborn infections, and leading Internet threats are the most dangerous things for the health of your device, network, and online accounts. Sometimes, a malware infection may damage your PC to an irreparable extent and compromise your system’s security. A potential hacker will then enter your device, search for some crucial and sensitive information or data, and use it for fraudulent purposes. Just installing the free malware remover cannot safeguard your crucial files and folders from potential hackers, you will also need to adjust its scan types and advanced settings to find most dreadful threats.
Tumblr media
Malwarebytes Free is one of the popular best free malware protection tools that almost every Internet user installs to stay protected from malicious codes and programs. The tool is available in both free and paid versions, and can detect and remove malware threats like worms, rootkits, Trojans, spyware, rogues, and others. The software also functions as a virus removal program that can quarantine all the detected threats and prevent them from coming back. Sometimes, stubborn threats may manage to escape from virus scans and might damage your crucial PC parts to an irreparable extent.
Read this blog to know about the different types of scan options that are available with Malwarebytes Free and which one you should use and when:
1.    Threat Scan
The ‘Threat Scan’ is a faster and efficient scan type that will search the common areas of your PC where malware gets detected easily. It will begin searching your device for viruses starting from memory and startup objects to registry and file system objects. The entire scan process will search for malware infection in operating system processes, drivers, and other applications. Additionally, the program will also scan all the executable files that are set to run at computer startup.
Tumblr media
The software offers complete protection against leading threats by keeping an eye on configuration changes that may happen in the Windows registry due to the presence of malware and other viruses. At last, the application will scan all the files stored on your computer's local disk drives and hunt for malicious software or code snippets.
2.    Custom Scan
As the name suggests, the ‘Custom Scan’ allows you to pick some particular files and folders that the program should scan for malware, spyware, computer virus, and other infections. It is a faster way to detect and remove stubborn threats from your device if you’re aware of their exact location on your system. The option turns highly impactful if a user wishes to run a virus scan on suspected particular folder, or an entire drive.
3.    Hyper Scan
The scan type is only available for users who have installed Malwarebytes Trial or Premium versions on their device. The scan is quite faster than those discussed above and will only search for currently active threats. Hyper scans will search for infections in the operating system processes, drivers, and other applications that are running currently on your device. It will also look out for infections in the executable files and applications that will run automatically at computer startup. Additionally, the program will also search for infections in other areas to prevent threats from reassembling themselves.
4.    Quick Scan
Tumblr media
It is important to consider that the ‘Quick Scan’ option is available only in Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.75 or lower versions. The scan will monitor all the processes and files running in memory, startup applications, Registry keys, and other areas to check for new and unknown infections. The scan type will also scan most favorite files and folders of the infections where they wish to get installed. If you’re in a hurry and wish to detect most of the stubborn infections and threats, then this scan type has commendable scan time speed and ability to conduct thorough detections.
5.    Full Scan
The scan type may take some time to get finished, but will bring more accurate scan results by finding viruses from each and every corner of your PC. The scan type will search all the processes and files running in memory, startup applications, all files and folders, and mapped drives for computer infections and viruses. It is one of the most effective but time-consuming scan that you can run to keep malware infections at bay.
6.    Flash Scan
PC experts recommend running a quick scan with this scan type to ensure that there are no additional threats to your system. The scan will search only for viruses present in the processes and files running in memory, and the startup locations. It is better to run it after completing the full scan of your system because it may find some infections that other scan types may fail to detect.
Conclusion
There are plenty of free malware remover programs available over the web, but Malwarebytes Free is one of the most prominent virus removal programs that you can download for free. The program and its different scan types can help you to find computer viruses, malware, and other Internet threats that may damage your device badly. How to Switch From TrueCrypt to VeraCrypt?
If you are a TrueCrypt user, then you might be aware that this hard drive encryption software was brought to its end by its anonymous official developers in May 2014. The SalesForce website, where this hard drive encryption tool was available for download, surprised one and all when it published a warning message stating that the tool is no more under maintenance. That means the tool is not receiving any security updates from its developers. In the warning message, the website also asked the users to switch to other disk encryption tools.
However, if you were not aware of these updates, then now you know that this hard drive encryption tool is no safer to use. However, if you were already aware of these updates, then either you must have already switched a new encryption tool or you must be looking forward to a new alternative encryption tool.
Before, you choose an alternative to TrueCrypt, you should first transform the TrueCrypt’s encrypted data into the non-encrypted format. Then you can use the new encryption tool to get the data freshly encrypted. VeraCrypt is one of the most popular hard drive encryption tools, and it is the preferred choice of many. In this blog, you will read how to decrypt the data encrypted by TrueCrypt, and then how to encrypt that same data using the VeraCrypt.
How to Decrypt a TrueCrypt Encrypted Drive/Partition?
•    Open the software on your computer •    Then, right-click on the partition/drive you want to decrypt •    Select ‘Permanently Decrypt’ in the right-click menu •    In the next screen, press ‘Yes’ to confirm the permanent decryption •    Once, more you have to press ‘Yes’ to confirm the decryption •    After confirming twice, the decryption process will finally start, but it will take some time. •    If you continue using your computer, then the decryption process will take more time. Thus, to speed up the process, you can leave the computer unused. That will make all the computer’s resources available for the process of decryption. That is how you can save a few minutes. •    Once, the decryption process is over, you will receive a prompt informing you of the process completion. •    Here, press ‘OK.’ •    Here, your computer might suggest a system restart. Press ‘Yes’ and reboot your computer. Once, you have decrypted the data; it becomes accessible to one and everyone. Keeping your data open like this, especially if its sensitive data, is not safe. Thus, you can use VeraCrypt, an alternative to Truecrypt, and get your data encrypted once again. Using VeraCrypt is safe because this hard drive encryption software is completely under regular maintenance, and hence receiving regular security updates.
How to Encrypt a Drive/Partition with VeraCrypt?
•    Download VeraCrypt. •    Install and run it. •    On the main screen, click ‘Create Volume.’ •    Click the radio button ‘Create an encrypted file container’ to keep it selected. •    Then, click ‘Next.’ •    Next, select the ‘Standard VeraCrypt volume,’ and then click ‘Next.’ •    Now, click ‘Select File.’ •    Choose a location to save the file. •    Next, name the file (Do not select an already existing file). Next, choose a hash algorithm and encryption algorithm. In this section, you can read information on each encryption algorithm. That will help you in making a selection. Stronger the encryption algorithm will be, longer the encryption process will be. •    Next, choose a size for the file. The file size can be any, provided that much free space is available on the drive where you have saved the file. •    Now, choose a password. Follow the advice of the wizard and as per that create a strong password. •    The next screen is for ‘Volume Format.’ Here you need to choose a file type. You are advisable to use FAT, as that will maintain the maximum compatibility across different platforms and devices. You should also move your mouse cursor around this window for at least 30 seconds to increase the cryptographic strength of the encryption keys. •    Once done, click ‘Format.’ •    Then, wait for the confirmation dialogue. •    Now, click ‘OK’ and then ‘Exit.’
Conclusion
With these steps, you have successfully created a VeraCrypt volume (file container). All the files or data stored inside this volume will get automatically created. Now, your hard drive data is all safe with VeraCrypt. Wikipedia page for this tool says, “VeraCrypt is a fork of the discontinued TrueCrypt project.” Thus, it is as effective as its successor. On top of that, this tool is an active software, so it receives regular security updates. Also, it has received security improvements over the issues that were there with TrueCrypt’s code.
