OKAY SO in the ocean light only travels a certain amount right?? Like each layer of the ocean is divided partly by how much light can get through it and part of that is how much color can pass through as well!!

Red is the first to get absorbed and gone, while blue travels the furthest, and evolution has absolutely taken advantage of this. See, past a certain point animals in the deep sea physically Can't see red. Their eyes don't have the cones to see it. But that doesn't stop animals from evolving to be that color

Being red is essentially the same as being invisible in the deep sea, and some creatures, like the dragonfish and viperfish, have evolved their photophores (light producing organs) to glow red, using that as their cloak!!

But that's not the only method of camouflage with bioluminescence, for another example look at the firefly squid!!

One of the ways they use their bioluminescence is a method of camouflage called counterillumination, where they glow on their bottom to match the light coming from the top, and are dark from the top to match the darkness looking down!! This idea is also used by other animals like sharks who are brighter on their bottom side than the top.

TL;DR: red in deep sea makes you invisible and fish love optical illusions

aaaaah delightful!! that counterillumination thing is SUPER cool and makes for such cool looking animals :O reminds me of how i think some animals closer to the surface [seals are the one i'm thinking of] have patterns on the top side of their body to imitate how light on rippling water looks, just applied in a particularly cool way for a really extreme environment
